Re: [slim] SB2 has died

That mirrors my experience - the stock power supply is the weakest link.
It fails but seldom cleanly, it'll result in remotes not working or
music stopping suddenly (ugh). That is about the only reason I stopped
replacing stock PS and got a bunch of linear supplies.

I had a feeling it was the PSU because the Transporter has the same
symptom when the PSU fails. The display goes out but it still works. A
week later the unit stops working entirely.

Take a bow, alfista! Turns out it was indeed the PSU.
I tried plugging in the PSU from a SB3 I also have, and everything is
fine.
Even the display is back working.
Thank you!

Ah - I thought the meaning was it was only used in Ethernet not that
there was never any Wi-fi available on that particular device at all.
That does explain a couple of recovered SB2 devices that I have with
holes in the back ... I had thought that the card and antenna had been
taken out to use somewhere else rather than never having been fitted.

The wireless on the SB2 was an option, the board may not have been
fitted

You can try taking out the wifi board even if not using it.
I have a SB Radio that will not boot with the wifi board in it but will
if I take it out (and then use it from ethernet).

[slim] SB2 has died

2019-11-23 Thread cliveb

My SB2 (bought back in 2005) seems to have finally turned up its toes.
A few weeks ago the display apparently failed, but the unit was still
working and playing OK.
Yesterday I went to use it and it was totally unresponsive, and not
showing as a player in LMS.
The power supply wall-wart is fine, supplying 5.08V.
This is a wired-only SB2, so it can't be due to a failed WiFi board.
I tried going through the motions of a factory reset and Xilinx reset,
and nothing appears to happen.
When I apply power, the optical output does NOT glow red.

So, I'm ready to accept it is done for and replace it with a RPi, but
before I do that is there anything I can check on the circuit board?
There are no visibly burned out components. What voltages can I check?
