Using the Squeezecenter Server & Network Health test I get a solid 100%
@2500kbps on the SB3s that are attached to the Powerline AV adapters. At
3000kbps it drops off to 95%. This is identical to what I get when I
test my hardwired SB3. In any case the throughput has been good enough
to stream FLACs to multiple SB3s throughout the house without any
drop-outs, which wasn't the case with wi-fi.

I don't have any info on the single-phase vs multi-phase home wiring
issue. FWIW I'm located in the northeast US and live in a 15 year old
house. Your mileage may vary.

There was a discussion on this topic here not too long ago. Wiring in
US homes is often multi-"phase", and powerline adaptors connected to
plugs on circuits not on the same phase work poorly, or sometimes not
at all. Someone mentioned there was some approach or device to bridge
the phases to make it work better. Others mentioned this is not a
problem in the UK, where electricity service and wiring in a home is
typically single phase.

I've exhausted my knowledge of this, and maybe went beyond it a bit.
I'm sure good information is available on this from the usual sources.

I have a Squeezebox in a bedroom which is in the opposite corner of the
house and one floor up from the wireless router and its wi-fi reception
was always spotty. I tried a high-gain antenna on the router: no
improvement. I added another wireless access point in the second floor
office, which is one room away: no improvement.

I finally bought a couple of these things:

http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-PLK200-Powerline-Ethernet-Adapter/dp/B000LJ5B8Q/

You plug one in near the router and then run a CAT 5 cable from it to
the router, then plug the other one in near the Squeezebox and run
another CAT 5 cable from it to the Squeezebox (you configure the
SqueezeBox same way you would if it was hardwired.) The Powerline
adapters communicate with each other though the house's electrical
wiring and bridge the traffic to your router. Works great. I ended up
buying a third one to use with the Squeezebox in the basement.

Unfortunately my Netgear doesn't support WDS and WPA.

I raised the router about 2 feet and now I'm getting a consistent 50
with one SB3 and 95 with the Transporter; however, the SB3 upstairs is
very erratic. I refreshed the status page seven times in a row and got
39, 19, 21, 21, 21, 41 and then 19 again.

The whole wireless thing seems a little like a black magic right now. I
tried refreshing the status page last night and the signal strength on
the SB3's fluctuated quite a bit w/o me actually doing anything; in
fact, the one on the 2nd floor would disappear and reappear.

On the other hand, the Transporter is behind a furnace and in a rack
filled with other gear and it's always around 87% which I find amazing.

Re: [slim] SB3 Antenna???

I had to move my WAP to the basement and had issues with wireless
coverage with my Linksys WRT54GS. Getting a pair of high gain antennas
from Radio Shack that cost $7 solved the problem for me. I'm also using
DD-WRT which allows you to crank up the wireless radio power if need be.
I'm using the default that DD-WRT specifies, which I believe is a bit
higher than what the stock FW sets it to.

I used my network of SBs througout the house as a guide to orienting
the antennas. After each shift in orientation I'd refresh the status
page on SqueezeCenter and noted the signal strengths of each SB.

You may run into difficulties trying to get devices from different

Re: [slim] SB3 Antenna???

I had this exact problem: weak wireless signal after I moved, and ended
up with the wireless router and the SB3 too far away from one another,
or with too many obstructions between them. I bought a wireless gaming
bridge - basically something that bridges a wired only device (XBox,
etc) to a wireless network. The benefit is, most of these bridges have
higher gain external antenna when compared to the SB3. So for about
$50, I was able to solve my problem without any modifications to the
SB3 itself. You could even replace the regular antenna on the bridge
with an even higher gain antenna if it's still not enough.

Re: [slim] SB3 Antenna???

2008-11-05 Thread rbz5416

I don't know of anything that can be done with the SBs other than maybe
playing around with orientation of the boxes in relation to the router.
Not always aesthetically an option.

Some things to try:

Ensure that the aerial(s) on the router (if it has external) are
tightly screwed in.

Using the player's signal strength meter, try different orientations of
the router's aerial(s).

Step through all the available Wi-Fi channels on the router looking for
the best combination of signal strength & stability. A stable 50% is
better than a peak of 60% that also dips below 50%.

Switch off any redundancy in the router. ie if the router supports "b"
& "g" & you only have "g" devices, select "g" only.

Consider replacing the aerial with a high gain alternative, maybe with
an extension cable. Or adding a parabolic reflector. Here's a DIY
jobbie but there are commercial varieties available.

http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html

I've asked the same sort of question but from the router end here:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=54691

As I said there, & apparently supported by your Transporter experience,
there does seem to be something inherently poor in the SB3's Wi-Fi.

It takes the guesswork out of determining what channels any of your

All of the channels overlap others. 1, 6 and 11 don't overlap
_each_other_, which I suppose would be a good thing to know if you were
putting up three wireless networks in your home. Or maybe if you have a
couple of neighbors with wifi networks you can work something out to use
only those three channels. If there are more than three competing
networks, though, there will be some interference somewhere, and one of
the other channels could easily end up being optimal.

Remember these things when dealing with WiFi:

1, 6, and 11 are the only non-overlapping channels on 11g. All the
others can cause problems. (There are situations that you can use
others, but you need to understand RF engineering very well to use them
:)

Antenna orientation matters. The signal coming off the antenna is
shaped like a doughnut if you stuck the antenna through the hole.
There is less signal coming from the tip as coming from the sides. The
higher the gain of the stick antenna, the flatter the doughnut is.

Keep trying different channels. I find that I generally get the best
signal strength at either end of the range. I think that's probably
because it avoids other nearby wifi networks where the WAPs tend to
default to a middle channel.
