Re: [slim] Showing CD Inserts (album notes)
JerryS I've just made a suggestion to Co1 re the use of the Lyrics tag for displaying the CD notes of classical CDs. gifs would be one route, but another would be via text entries to the lyrics tag. CD covers and booklet pictures are adequately handled by the present artwork arranegemnts, I think. -- Cape11 Cape11's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13763 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81716 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Showing CD Inserts (album notes)
I think this is a great idea too. One reason why our living-room is still full of CDs is that I sometimes want to be able to get to the liner notes easily (though to be honest, I rarely do). Being limited to just the front cover (and often a poor-quality low-res version of it) reminds me of the days when I used to buy cassettes. I'm often disappointed at the paucity of information and artwork that comes with audio downloads. On a few rare occasions, I have scanned-in non-cover artwork and/or liner notes, and kept those in the relevant album's folder. But I don't think I've ever used them! And I certainly haven't done anything about making them more accessible. Just too lazy. Sometimes I will look up info about an album on Wikipedia or allmusic.com whilst listening; but that doesn't always exist, or doesn't have the info I want (who's that guest trumpeter, for example). (Hmm, I guess being able to to launch web searches for an artist / album / whatever might be useful... oh hang on, that's already there in Firefox (albeit crude)!) -- Brian -- Brian Ritchie Brian Ritchie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2319 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81716 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I don't have an ipad and have been resisting the temptation to buy one in the hope that something more open source will be available soon. But yes, presumably that would work, it just needs a browser and of course a PHP enabled Webserver running on the network which not everyone will have. Integration with ipeng or similar would be much neater and more widely applicable. I suppose my solution is just proof of concept and works for me locally. So, my undersatnding of your cover viewing solution is that it's totally seperate from SB (which only accesses the music files and associated tags). i.e. you get the music playing, then switch to Safari to browse the artwork/covers? Re: [slim] Showing CD Inserts (album notes)
I keep all the "other" scans of artwork etc. in a sub directory of the album. The first ipad app that lets me browse this folder while playing will definitely get my money. Using my (bare minimal) of app programming knowledge though, it looks like it'll be a bit of work. But I live in hope... ;) Simon. -- Raptor Raptor's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13132 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81716 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

This is a very good idea. I like this feature which is the only thing missing in our systems compared to having the physical CDs with us. Particularly interesting in classical music I think. -- Gilles2 Gilles2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=29237 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81716 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Showing CD Inserts (album notes)
I bought my first squeezebox in February after long deliberation and prevarication and became hooked very quickly. Upgrading to the SB+ and matching amplifier I have now sold off my cd transport, dac and amplifier. Much as I love the SB environment, the one thing I really missed was being able to read the cd inserts while listening to the music (ok, some of the inserts are fairly rubbishy but others provide interesting information on the composer, artist, recording, libretto, etc.). I thought about physical solutions, such as keeping the inserts in ringfold binders etc, but a digital solution seemed more in line with the SB concept. So, being too old to learn PERL, I wrote a few scripts in PHP which will display gifs of the inserts on a web page. The most commonly used option is to show the insert of the cd now playing but searching by composer or artist are other options. The inserts are stored as scanned gif images in the folder directories (i.e., where the cover.jpg images are stored) as i.gif, 2.gif... Scanning was a pain, but as I am retired I have the time. I read the images as web pages on a netbook I keep by my sofa. It seems to me it would be nice to have this feature integrated into the SB ipad apps which seem popular but maybe I am the only one nerdy enough to want to read the inserts? If others feel the same maybe Pippin or bluegaspode might be persuaded to look at this possibility? +---+ |Filename: Screenshot-6.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=10561| +---+ -- JerryS JerryS's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=38998 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=81716 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
