[slim] SqueezeBox 2 rehoused

2005-09-06 Thread CardinalFang

I've finally got my Squeezebox into a new housing, it's one I got from
an Italian Company - AudioKit
(http://www.audiokit.it/ENG/Frames/Introduction1.htm)

Here's a picture:

It's the central unit. The left hole is for a power LED and the right
exposes the remote control receiver. It still works really well even
with the more limited aperture.

The case is a tiny bit wider than I wanted, but looks OK. There's an
awful lot of blank metal, which I need to get used to, but now I have
lots of space for linear power supplies, clock modifications etc.

The inside isn't so pretty at the moment, I managed to get a new cable
to link the main board with the display, but it's a metre long! Also I
need to get new stand-offs to mount the display at the right distance
and also paint some of the front panel edges black to minimise
reflection. The opening is in fact a little too small, it doesn't
obscure anything, but you need to be directly in front of the unit to
see all the screen from a distance. I can live with that.

Ideally I think a case should be like the bottom unit in this picture,
the Musical Fidelity XDac3. I'll stick with this for the moment, it
wasn't too expensive to do (under £100, including machining the front)
and it matches the Copland gear well, but if I see a nice smaller unit
I may be tempted to shrink it down!

I disagree with you on that - i think it looks really good. All it
really needs is something on that big exanse of bare metal. A
monochrome 'Slim Devices' logo above the screen would be ideal.

I think it needs two knobs that match the other Copland gear.
Not clear what to have then do, but getting a pot/switch with
proper knobs shouldn't be too hard.

Maybe an on/off on one, and a real volume pot for the headphone
on the other
