Re: [slim] Squeezebox affecting broadband usage..?
Downloading a song or Streaming a song is nearly the same. If you use a service like rhapsody which streams the mp3 to your computer you will still be using memory. Downloading a song means it is saved on your hardrive, but streaming a song is nearly the same because the information still has to be sent to your computer it just isn't written to your hard drive. Sometimes streamed songs are in a different format so they require less memory but in the end it will still count to your usage. Also Internet radio stations will use memory because they are also being streamed to your computer. -- phildeeze I consider myself a Wi-Fi radio addict! Re: [slim] Squeezebox affecting broadband usage..?
If you kill SqueezePlayer from a desktop without hitting pause or stop first, then the stream will continue. Maybe SBS still thinks the player is out there Not sure if the same applies to a 'hardware' player if you switch off the mains without pressing power-off first. -- bonze TranquilPC T2-WHS-A3 - SqueezeCenter Version: 7.6.0 3 x wireless SB3, and 2x Touch bonze's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6150 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85883 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Squeezebox affecting broadband usage..?
A typical 128kbs radio stream will eat around 56MB per hour. So three hours a week is likely to be around 750MB month. Is your router's wi-fi secured? If not maybe someone else is leeching off it. -- rbz5416 rbz5416's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12089 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85883 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

thanks guys, this is interesting. If I turn off my SB without stopping the radio stream, does it continue to stream..? The numbers that the SB takes still don't seem high enough to top out my usage but this is very useful stuff ta -- daytripper daytripper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41800 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85883 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

When I'm here, I hit the off on the transporter itself. The usage is the same on these days. If it was still streaming, when I'm out of town, the stream would be 24/7 rather than 3 or 4 hours. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85883 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Squeezebox affecting broadband usage..?
Hi there I run a Touch, Radio and Boom off a USB hdd. The whole thing runs off my wireless router, a BT HomeHub. Now, I know this is a little out-there, but I'm trying to explore all the options... In the last few months around (but not exactly when) I've had the SB system, my internet provider (British Telecom) has been telling me I've almost been busting my monthly broadband allowance, using 8, 9 or 10gb per month. Problem is, I don't do anything heavy on the Internet and am mystified as to how I can use so much. I email, surf (websites, YouTube etc). I don't download or share music, videos etc, or even do online gaming. Occasioanlly I'll watch a streaming movie on iPlayer, but never more than once per month. There's nothing there that should bust my usage limits So my question is this: is there anyway that the Squeezebox could be affecting my usage..? The system is permanently connected so I'm wondering if there's anyway it can impact my online usage..? Do you play internet radio or other online services(Napster, Pandora, Rhapsody or similar) on your Squeezebox ? Do you use any image based screen savers on your Touch or Radio ? The Radio and Touch will definitely use internet because they communicate with the central mysqueezebox.com server now and then, but I don't think it's going to have a huge effect on the broadband usage unless you play internet radio, online services or have an image based screen saver which is active most of the time. If you have a router, maybe it contains some statistics where you can see which of your devices is using most bandwitdh ? -- erland Erland Isaksson ('My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info)) (Developer of 'many plugins/applets' (http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/User:Erland). Re: [slim] Squeezebox affecting broadband usage..?
Thanks for the reply. I listen to Internet radio a fair amount, but no massively - perhaps 3 hours per week. There's no internet screensavers etc on there at all The router won't tell us which devices use what, it gives a daily report but it seems pretty random; some days increase a lot, others don't. -- daytripper daytripper's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41800 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85883 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I listen to internet radio about 3 hours a day, probably 5 days a week. Do normal email/websurfing stuff for about 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. Watch a streaming netflix movie about once a week. I seem to use about 15-20GB a month out of my 250GB allowance. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=85883 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
