Re: [slim] Squeezebox question before i buy

2008-02-05 Thread mnichollsuk

Hey guys

Im very happy with the hardware, and the way the software works on the
server and everyone can share from it. I am running SqueezeCentre 7.0
but find it a little clunky. I wouldn't mind the clunyness if the
lastfm plugin worked fast

I am finding that when a user in the house and switches the lastfm
username within SqueezeCentre sometimes it doesn't actually change or
to make it change we need to reboot the server software

Is it just me, or it the lastfm plugin with more than 1 profile very
clunky?

Please advise - Many Thanks

Router filters are almost always for the connection between the internet
and the local network. Ie, they won't block local port to local port.

You shouldnt have to set anythying on your router unless you're
planning on accessing your server from offsite.

PSA - I have allowed access to all the ports in the image and turned
windows firewall off, and nothing, no other pc's or laptops in the
house can access 192.168.1.17

Re: [slim] Squeezebox question before i buy

2007-12-21 Thread darwinl

Actually if the Slim software is already on your server and that server
is on the network with an IP of 192.168.1.17 then you access from other
laptops in a browser using http://192.168.1.17:9000

On the server itself you can use localhost:9000 or 127.0.0.1:9000

It is not necessary to load the software on the laptops themselves.
You can control the Squeezebox from the web interface accessed as
listed above.

Does that work? Each laptop can bookmark 192.168.1.17:9000

Each of you can have different playlists setup. You will see there is
way to select player (you only have the one). However, using one
server any laptop could control any of multiple Squeezeboxes on the
network. Each could be playing the same songs as you move room to room
or each can have their own streams going independently. Works great.

192.168.1.17 is probably the correct IP of the server, but if you have
a firewall installed, you will need to unlock it for the server.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox question before i buy

2007-12-21 Thread mnichollsuk

Hey guys

I have installed Squeezecentre 7.0 and it works very well on the
server, but im slightly confused how the laptops will work with it.

I assumed that each laptop would enter the IP of ther sevrer software?
127.0.0.1:9000 and this diddnt bring anything up, neither did the
address of the server 192.168.1.17

So i tried installing the Squeezecentre software on a laptop as well
and it is asking for a fresh install and config.

If the sevrer has all the music on, and Squeezebox installed, how does
each laptop in the house control the music?

Many Thanks

Somewhere in archives of this forum are photos of an SB installation in
an outdoor gazebo-type thing with hot tub. The "waterproof remote" was a
standard SB remote in a ziplock bag.

And give Softsqueeze a try too - this is a Squeezebox / Transporter
software emulation.

In my experience (sorry, Mr Titmuss!) it's not been quite as sturdy in
its operation as the real thing, but Softsqueeze will certainly give
you a chance to give the user interface a test-drive.

Download slimserver now! It's free, and you can test it out before you

If this is the case, then you are golden. Yes, it would be very easy
for each of you to connect via your laptop browser, local application
(such as Moose), or even handheld device. The playlists would most
likely be saved on the media server in a common folder.

Ahhh I forgot to mention one important thing lol We have a shared
server with all our media on.

All music is on this server - i just want to make sure we can all
control what music we want to play on our individual laptops, and we
can each create a playlist on our laptops from the music on the
server...

Was a bit of a major thing to miss out on my first post lol :)

Re: [slim] Squeezebox question before i buy

2007-12-13 Thread aubuti

Any computer on your network can control the SqueezeBox (SB) via a web
browser interface. However, the SB is a slim client, and only connects
to one server at a time. So, strictly speaking, when your different
computers are connecting to the SB, they're really connecting to the
computer that is running the server software (aka slimserver, which
will has been renamed SqueezeCenter as of version 7.0, which is in
beta).

The practical implications are (a) you need to install slimserver on at
least one of your laptops, (b) SB will only "see" one slimserver at a
time, and (c) if you install slimserver on multiple laptops, then you
*do* need to go up to the SB with the remote to change which computer
it connects to as the server.

The main potential hangup I see is that if it's like shared houses I've
lived in, the 3 of you are coming and going at all times, often with
your laptops. That's a problem if the one whose laptop is streaming to
the SB decides to leave with the laptop while someone else is listening
in the shower. I think your best bet would be to set up a separate
computer dedicated to serving music, that will always stay home. It
doesn't have to be a great computer -- almost anything will do. My
first slimserver computer was a surplus Dell I picked up from work for
$40 (500MHz P3 and 256MB RAM). My current one is a network drive with
even less horsepower.

[slim] Squeezebox question before i buy

2007-12-13 Thread mnichollsuk

Hey

I live in a shared house, there are 3 of us all hooked up to a gigabit
wired network, we already have speakers in the bathroom and now need to
work out the best way all 3 of us can play our music to it (at different
times of course) Im hoping i can buy this device, hook it to the
speakers and the switch and it will do what we want

Can 3 people access the squeezebox remotley to set up a playlist (can
we decide what to play sat at our laptops or do we need to manually
walk up to the device and play with the remote control - or can
playlists be set up frm a laptop in another room - each 1 of us has our
own laptop)?

1 pc, 1 mac, and 1 linux user, can all 3 pc's connect to this device
and stream music to it?

Please let me know, as if it does all of this, then i think it is the
device for us. Thaks
