Another vote for robocopy. I use it for a lot of mission-critical stuff
as it's been rock solid.
It's a command-line app. If you don't like command line apps, there's a
GUI around for it (also free).
One nice thing about command line apps is that they are very easy to
put in the scheduler.

Re: [slim] Updating music files over the network

2011-09-22 Thread mr-b

Just a word of caution re: SyncToy - there's a clue from the name. It is
just a free tool provided by MS and support is not guaranteed.
I trialled it and found that it had a 255 character path+file length
limit (which is quite easy to hit with a typical music library folder
scheme).

http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/uk-UA/synctoy/thread/190980a7-5428-4b96-a016-53b7cb82bc4b

I'd recommend using robocopy (Windows utility) if you are OK with
command-line tools, since this has had most of the bugs ironed out and
it doesn't have the path length issue.

+2 for Synctoy 2.1. I have set it up with the task scheduler to
automatically copy the files over in the evening and such. I've also
used (and paid for) Allway Sync, but prefer Synctoy for its simplicity
(setting up rules in Allway Sync can be a pain). Best of all, Synctoy
is free.

Another program to consider is Limagito. It is only free for one "rule"
but that is all you really need.

Thank you for all your replies. Squeezeplug now controlling all my
squeezebox needs. I downloaded Allway Sync, which now automatically
detects any new music files, and copies them over the network to the
external hdd attached to the plug. Still got to manually rescan for new
music on the server though!

Hi Garym,
I can now copy music files from the dektop over the LAN to the
external hdd attached to the sheevaplug. When I installed sbs onto the
plug I didn't realise I should have installed Samba. That is now
done, and it's just a case of drag and drop, and rescan for new music.
Takes seconds! I will still check out the various recommendations for
software to automate the process though. Here's one option
http://www.2brightsparks.com/

If you have any problems with your plug, I thoroughly recommend truehl
on the 3rd party plugins forum. He really is incredibly helpful.

Good luck with your Squeezeplug,

Goodsync its not free but not expensive and is absolutely rock solid.
You can set it up to run in idle time in the background when you arent
logged on. etc Its the only program I've found that I trust enough for
the job. Once setup, forget about it and it just does its thing and
will send you an email status report after each sync. Their beta v9
looks really interesting as well with delta p2p copying but I've only
used v8 so far.

Re: [slim] Updating music files over the network

2011-09-14 Thread alZmtbr

Perhaps I am confused?

What has Win7? The SheevaPlug or another PC, a DeskTop?

Anyways... If the sheevaplug has UBUNTU or soem other flavour of LINUX,
then you will need SAMBA so that the music folder can be shared over the
LAN. You can then 'map the folder' as a Drive on the windows machine.
Once that is done, use whatever Sync software is you pleasure.

I use SyncToy to back up to an occasionally attached USB drive on the
XP Pro PC from my music folder on a UBUNTU 11.04 shuttle PC.

Cheers!
Allan

I've only had the squeezeplug running for a couple of days, so although
the Sheevaplug is visible on my LAN, to answer your question, no not
yet! Until I do some research, I'll have to download new music onto my
dektop as per normal, connect the external drive, copy the new files,
reconnect the hdd to the plug, and rescan. Very laborious!

There are obviously easier ways to do this. I'll check out Castalla's
replies and get back yo you,

with an external hd as a server for all my squeezebox needs. Very

With that in mind, is anyone aware of a Windows (7) program that I can
use to automatically update the external hd over the network with any
new music I have downloaded/ripped. Something I can maybe configure to
do this once a week or so.
