If you're in a trusted network, your hardware firewall should be just
fine.

But make sure you have secure WiFi - that's the primary way someone
could break into your trusted network.

This is off-topic, but I'm interested since I just installed a brand new
Win10 on an old computer that serves as my music server (all it does).
So far it's working fine, even with the Windows Firewall on.

Is there any reason why a hardware-based firewall, as on my router,
isn't sufficient? Quite aside from other third-party firewall solutions
that come as part of AV packages.

Thanks for posting this! I was trying to set a new instance on a
new-to-me computer and found it would not work. I eventually twigged to
a firewall issue. So, nice to know it is not just my setup.

[slim] Windows 10 Firewall... Players can't connect to LMS... solved?

2021-01-28 Thread pablolie

...just in case someone out there has a config that's worked perfectly
well for several years... and all of a sudden things go wrong and your
players can't find an LMS server on your network... as just happened to
me.

I simply turned off the Windows Firewall for my Private Network under
"Windows Security > Firewall & network protection" in settings. It is my
suspicion the last MSFT security update somehow turned up the firewall
security a notch and blocked the players.

I am not a fan of the solution, don't quite understand why I suddenly
had to it... and configuring firewall exceptions in Windows Firewall or
Defender Firewall (they call things different ways depending on how you
get to it, it's silly) is still remarkably arcane and user unfriendly...
just let me pick an app froma list of running apps, but nah, you got to
enable the program files that are buried somewhere in the program
directories...

But it works again...
