Re: [slim] Wireless Interference - Channel Change not had impact, any other ideas?
Hi All, Thanks for the replies to my problem, this place is excellent. I tried a few of the ideas mentioned above and have worked out what the issue is, it isn't as first thought a problem with wireless interference - it is a problem with my wireless card/driver set-up on Ubuntu. I currently dual boot with Ubuntu XP can run Squeezecenter from both, I booted into XP to install Netstumbler and check the nearby networks, I noticed there approx 10 other networks so tried playing a FLAC file and it worked fine. I then did a network test on XP and it worked well, had full 100% all the way up to 5000kbps I've just tried the same in Ubuntu, at 1000kbps I averaged 75% and at 5000kbps a paltry 24% - so there is a problem with the wireless card on Ubuntu. If anyone on this forum has tips please let me know, am going to post on the Linux forum check the Ubuntu forums Thanks again...getting closer.. Use netstumbler to see what networks are around and help choose best channel. It can also help with orientation and positioning of router and player to improve signal. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53534 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm not sure what the SBR firmware has to do with it... Agreed. The whole point of channels (originally) was to allow multiple access points to provide continuous coverage over a wide area, by using non-overlapping spectrum. If they overlap, you'll run into problems, even if they're on the same network. -- CatBus CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53534 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Wireless Interference - Channel Change not had impact, any other ideas?
Hi All, I recently undertook a trial of ripping and playing FLAC files, I noticed that the majority of time the playback was choppy and distorted like a lot of posts on the forums have referred to, this was also experienced on the small number of apple lossless and M4A files that are transcoded to other file formats. I've looked at those posts and the wiki and are 99% sure this is down to wireless interference, the wireless signal is fine and the Squeezebox is close to the router. However whenever a neighbours wireless is transmitting both my squeezebox, as described above, and internet streaming is impacted, I've also done squeezebox network tests which show patchy performance above 256kbps. I've monitored this recently and when the other router isn't transmitting then the FLAC playback works well and as expected. I've scanned and changed my channel to 11 away from the other router but I am still getting the same problems, does anyone know of anything else I can try to solve this problem ? I'm aware a wired connection will resolve and longer term will be moving to this (through a NAS) however I also want to add a Boom which will be wireless, so am keen to find out any other ways to resolve. I also know of the Ethernet Powerline adaptors but could do without the extra cost at this stage. Any help appreciated, if details on router etc. needed then can provide Thanks Ian -- socistep socistep's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=18860 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53534 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I guess you would probably need to use something like a wi-spy to do a good site survey of the airwaves to see where the problems are coming from. The first question I have is if your squeezecenter server is on wired networking. Second it would be helpful to know what kind of AP you are using. It may be possible that upgrading to a MIMO based wifi router could fix some of your problems. MIMO is generally found on draft-11n routers. You won't get the 11n or 5.8ghz help, but the better antenna setup would probably help. I suspect something is wrong with the receiver firmware, but I can't prove or even reproduce it. -- Millwood Millwood's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3600 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53534 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

What kind of router? Does it have external antennas? Handy enough to try this? http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html Directional and external antennas can help with reception. Moving to a newer wireless n router for the higher broadcast strength can also help. Try to get as close as you can to line of sight to your router as well - less stuff between can help as well. -- tedfroop Good judgement is the result of experience ... Re: [slim] Wireless Interference - Channel Change not had impact, any other ideas?
In addition to changing channels, there's: - Router placement. Generally, put it up high with few dense materials between it and the SB3. Brick walls, tile, and metal things (ventilation ducts, appliances) are barriers. Some plaster walls have a nice wire mesh in them, pray you don't have that. - Look for other interfering items other than WAPs. That'd be microwave ovens, old 2.4GHz cordless phones, Bluetooth devices. Get them out of the way. Buy new phones for your neighbor if you have to. - Antenna positioning replacement. Try another antenna orientation, or if you feel like it, get a different antenna for your router. Directional antennas really help if your SB3 is in a fixed location, but may not help with your Boom. - Bitrate limiting. This should probably be suggestion #2, right after using a wired connection. I know your music is in FLAC format but you may just have to go with 192k MP3, or maybe lower. It's a per-player setting so you don't have to do this everywhere. Despite the rumors, lossy encoding is not the devil. - Wireless repeater/bridge/other creative range extender ideas. Hey, if you have the money... -- CatBus CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53534 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
