But for a server, it's more difficult. On x86, Atom is an option that's certainly on par or better performance-wise than ARM. (Part of the reason is that most SBCs use fairly outdated SoCs.) And even ultrabook processors (Haswell or Broadwell microarchitecture) like the i3-4005U are interesting options. You get massively more performance than with ARM. But their power consumption is quite low. E.g., the aforementioned i3-4005U has 15 W TDP but uses far less (more like 5 W) in real life. And Broadwell reduces power consumption even more. So I'm really contemplating putting my LMS on a Broadwell-based Intel NUC. They are expected to become available by the end of February. I prefer to put my data on a NAS, though. My pow . Use something x86 based ,use internal SATA drive one separate drive for the OS ( not just its own partition ) other drives for the music . The OS drive can be an SSD . Use vortexbox or some linux OS on your own , preferably annOS wihtout Desktop ( GUI ) a server OS . You will admin it trough web interfaces and ssh anyway . My HP Microserver is fast enough , today I would have opted for more RAM as the later LMS 7.9 can take advantage of that . So basically in my pow a dual core atom or better is sufficient as a server . And the good old x86 architecture has good FPU and supports most of the helper ap's that LMS uses ,this will mean that you're guaranteed to be able to use LMS fulll potential . Maybe time has moved one and everything is aviable for the arm architecture ? Hacking the Vortexbox (2.3) install was really quite easy. The QNAP folder /share/Qmultimedia is still available via Samba as well for windows clients. The important bit to get right is the file permissions and ownership so that LMS, the VB CD ripper and Samba all work as you would want. So, generally speaking, I think you get more bang for your buck by going the Atom route rather than the AMD Fusion/Ontario route. I have been using an Arm QNAP NAS for some years but I am currently in the process of converting to a Vortexbox running on an old Dell Server but with the files still stored on the NAS via NFS mount. Scan speed is about twice as fast on the Dell as it is on the QNAP but the Dell doesn't have the same disk capacity. The Vortexbox CD ripper rips straight to the share on the QNAP. Personally I would avoid anything that relies on USB storage. Have found that USB disks often go "offline" and require disconnection, server reboot and then reconnection to get them recognised again. This is with all sorts of different Linux distros. Hi, You don't need much cpu power to run LMS. Especially not if you use flac, since flac is natively supported by all squeezeboxes. If you use not natively supported file formats, you need cpupower for transcoding of lms. Also if you play resolutions that are not supported, for example 24/96 on a boom or radio, you need cpu power for resampling. Since I use only flacs and don't play highres to not natively supported devices, the cubie is great. I have a larger server with an intel celeron which has enough power for all the transcoding stuff, but it is not in use as a squeezserver. On the cubie, a full scan of about 21000 files takes about 1/2 hour. If you want it faster, you need more power. A NAS is only useful, if you need the diskspace. The lack of cpu power and mostly the lack of sufficient memory would be hard with large liberies and music in flac and multi squeezeboxes.
