Re: [slim] Frivolous Question ('Center' vs. 'Centre')
I think many Americans seem to be under the impression the British/English care a great deal, which mostly they dont - we know full well that English is an bastardised illogical mish mash of Old English, French, Latin and several other languages. Strangely enough, it seems to often be the case that its the American friends i have show the most Confusion and surprise at the they other nations speak 'their' language. A lot of differences with US English comes from the fact the Europeans that populated America (who did not speak English) had to adopt it - so it was slightly simplified and many words are spelt more phonetically. I.e. they could not understand why there would be a 'u' in colour (color) so simply dropped it. Some changes makes perfect sense, some don't. Anyway... i was under the impression that Centre and Center are both acceptable in the UK - but have slightly different situations. Might be wrong, but i though we had a 'Community Center' and the 'Centre of a circle' etc (or other way around). Like i said, really dont care but i find it strangely interesting! -- autopilot SLIMSERVER:[/B] 7.0 APLHA (WINDOWS XP) + ALIENBBC, SLIMSCROBBLER & LAST.FM. *AMP:* CAMBRIDGE AUDIO 640A (LIVING ROOM) / DENON MD30 (BEDROOM). *SPEAKERS:* MISSION 701'S (LIVING ROOM) / KEF CRESTA 1'S (BEDROOM). *REMOTE:* T-MOBILE MDA VARIO / HARMONY 525 (IR) / *BETA TESTING JIVE REMOTE. I just find it interesting to see how Anglophiles can care about their language, while we get spoilt with anglicisms. Worst of all some of them find their way into our language in a completely false way. Take eg. the Saxon genetiv (is this what you call it?) "'s". It's used in any place now where you would put a single S: plurals, verbs ending in an s etc. It's so stupid I found myself using it too :-/. I remember my German teacher giving me a lesson after I had used it in a genetive (where it would have been correct at least in English). Ever since I try to avoid it. And this must have been almost... gee, I'm getting old. AFAIK only the French try to fight back by law, forcing any English slogan, ad, phrase or whatever to be translated. Which on the other hand sometimes looks odd. "Computer" seems so globally accepted, I was very much surprised I had to learn "ordinateur" in French. I think it is ironic that the OP probably speaks "Hiberno English" where we have have own local spellings/phrases. For example, sometimes using "ye" instead of "you". Who are we to criticise ? I can accept spelling variations but my pet hate is typography where letters in the middle of a word are capitalised (capitalized) as this is not "proper" English spelling. The capitalisation in "SqueezeCenter" emphasises that is a product name rather than a word. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42625 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
