Different product, different market, different audience.

So you buy one of those products in your links and attach a USB drive.
What then happens when you buy a 2nd or a 3rd?
Each will have it's own USB drive ?

No speaker on the Duet is ok :) I'm using my existing hi-fi.

Signed up initially to query on NAS in 3rd Party Plugins forum. Then
realise Duel with NAS (SATA HDD, old ATA HDD) still require much effort
and money. So it is better to choose one that is convenient and suits my
criteria better.

Posted here to let others who are considering to buy 1 decide whether
they need the USB input or not.
Also hopefully Slim Devices will get feedbacks from this forum to
improve on their products. I went to their website and couldn't contact
them as I do not have their product.

Re: [slim] I intend to buy a Duet Squeezebox but it lacks USB port for USB HDD(with mp3 etc)

2008-07-05 Thread funkstar

The idea of adding a USB port to a SlimDevices product comes up every so
often, so you are not the only one to want such a feature. I just can't
see it happening.

The thing is, doing this would create a product that is completely at
odds to the ideas behind the SqueezeBox range of products. All of them
require either a localy run server app (which can be on a full blown PC
or a NAS box style appliance) or an internet connection for
SqueezeNetwork (like a giant SqueezeCenter in the sky).

The devices themselves are quite dumb. The only display what they are
told to display and play what they are sent by the server. They do not
access the music directly. For a single seat installation, this does
appear to complicate things, but once you get into whole house audio,
it makes a great deal of sense, giving you a central store of all your
music, accessable by any player throughout the installation.

If having local storage on your music player is a must for you , then
you'll need to look at other devices. An iPod, Sony Walkman, Archos PMP
or any other portable media player might be more suited to your needs.

I just bought a 160GB 605wifi for films when i'm traveling. I've not
had a chance to play with it yet, but it is pretty nice. Before that I
had a AV500, it was OK, but the 605 is much slimmer, more powerful and
a lot more flexible (with widgets and add ons). Going to get the GPS
cradle at some point too :)

A Squeezebox and a Ripserver pretty much equates to this. The
Ripserver is a bit expensive still though and I would like one that
allow me to fit my own drives.

The new Linn device looks interesting (though much more expensive and
allegedly with an interface that is not the friendliest).

If Slimdevices updates Duet receiver with USB input for HDD, I will not
hesitate to buy one. Just switch on the Duet and I can listen to either
Internet radio or my favorite songs almost instantaneously.

Initially wanted to buy a micro JVC player for its Bluetooth, FM radio
and USB input, then read a review that the FM reception isn't good.

Then focus changed to DAB radio and then to Internet Radio.

What about purchasing a Premium Locker at mp3tunes (supported via
Squeezenetwork, so no need for an always on PC, just an internet
connection)? Then upload your tracks to mp3tunes which will give you
not only online storage for them but also enable you to listen to
either internet radio or your tracks via a Duet, without a PC/Mac
running Squeezencenter. mp3tunes support most lossy formats, but not
lossless.
