Re: [slim] Is my Squeezebox 3 dead?
I had a similar problem described in this thread. After two and a half years, the SB3 is suddenly dead. Logitech phone support said since there's no repair facility in Australia and the unit is out of warranty, it's a write off. So I thought I might as well crack the case open and see if it was something obvious like a blown capacitor or similar. Before I did, I decided to measure the current draw, which was easier for me to do using a separate switchable PSU I have with exposed terminals. Viola, the squeezebox worked. So notch up another dead power supply. I wonder if the power supply was simply under-speced from the start. The PSU which was supplied with the unit claims an output of [EMAIL PROTECTED], while the sticker on the bottom of the SB3 wants [EMAIL PROTECTED] (I didn't end up measuring what is actually being used, might do that later.) -- toojays toojays's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=5502 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41199 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Just a followup post to my previous one. After contacting technical support I sent the squeezebox and power supply to the US from Sydney for about $65. A bit less than 2 weeks later I received my unit back again - apparently there was a problem with the power supply. I've bought three SB1s, all of which pre-date the SP2, which predates your SB3. While I agree with your sentiment, there are some reasonably big differences between the SB1 and SB2 in terms of CPU and decoder. I also have a SB2 with a wireless card that died after 6 months causing the whole box to look dead. Thankfully SlimDevices was just down the road from my place and replaced the card on the spot the day after I contacted support. After replacement the SB2 has been great. However it's still only a couple years old. Time will tell if the SB3 design lasts as long as the previous designs. My first Empeg car box lasted 7 years (with the occasional drive replacement) without a hitch. It still works, but I decided to replace it with my spare due to the original having a slightly flaky volume knob. I'm glad Slim has been building hardware with longevity in mind, and has been doing amazing things with software updates for old hardware that I don't expect out of other companies. This is why I keep promoting their stuff to everyone I know who is even the slightest bit a music geek. -- SuperQ SuperQ's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2139 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41199 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Is my Squeezebox 3 dead?
This must be a pandemic! I am also in Sydney and my Squeezebox (v3) just died yesterday (8th Feb 2008). It was two years and one month old. Mine didn't die overnight though. Its been going down intermittently for the past fortnight. At the time I thought it was just suffering from local wireless interference and intermittently losing contact with the slimserver, but now I suspect it was actually a sign of incremental failure. I'm hoping its just the power supply that is broken, but some power is still getting through because the squeezebox is warm to the touch and the optical spdif connector is emitting light. Other than that, I get no network response from the squeezebox (either wireless or ethernet) and the screen is totally blank. -- subconscious subconscious's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15420 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41199 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Now I am on the hunt for a new Power Supply... the ratings on the supply are a bit hard to find any tips on tolerances The bottom of the dead Squeezebox 2 unit my son gave me to look at a few days ago says 5V at 2A, the bottom of the switch mode power supply says 5V at 1000MA (that's 5V at 1A). Go figure! Re: [slim] Is my Squeezebox 3 dead?
Well, I had contact with the Slim Devices support. The repair alone is going to set me back USD 90, but on top of that, I need to get it to the US. This is very disappointing, as with the Logitech acquisition, one might hope a more global service. I bought a second Squeezebox in Sydney, but if I cannot get local support for repairs (and I don't think that two years and two weeks is too much to expect for such a piece of equipment to keep functioning), I will not buy any other Wireless Streamer from Logitech. As great as these devices are, I need to be able to count on the support. Adding the cost of shipment to the US to the repair costs, my Squeezebox is a total loss. It is cheaper to buy a new one. Surely, sending some components and a set of technical diagrams should enable the local Logitech technical staff to repair these units? I don't know where to get them repaired yet. Sounds like an issue I had as well, with an out of warranty SB3, Do a search here I came up with a thread that discussed removing the wirless card from the unit, mine sprang back into life and now works fine in wired mode via homeplugs.
