Did anybody see these announcements from March? I just stumbled upon
them by accident.

A bit interesting I thought.

Debian Squeeze's GUI is faster (because it includes the Intel IEGD
driver) than the current Android GUI.

On the other hand, I like the Android usability much more, because it
is made for Touchscreens...

I'm using Debian Squeeze on the Joggler right now with mainly two apps:
SqueezePlay and MythTV.

That works ok, especially if you install EasyStroke for gestures.

But things like e.g. browsing, email... are not very comfortable on
Debian Squeeze (in touch only mode), because the Android
OnScreenKeyboard is *much* better.

About the Android WLAN issue:
Android seems to have problems with low signal strengths. :-/
The network range on Debian seems to be a bit better...

Strange, I'm using WPA/PSK here and that works without problems.

The only issue is that Wifi is deactivated on boot time, i.e. I have to
reactivate it every time when I restart the Joggler. But the credentials
are saved successfully, so I only need to tap on the Wifi checkbox to
activate it.

I'm on vacation in (rainy) Tuscany/Italy right now, but I'll try WPA2
when I'm back in Germany.

thanks for your message re squeezecommander.

I'm having trouble getting wifi connected with your Android image. When
selecting wifi in settings it occasionally says 'unable to start', and
when retrying it will see networks but doesnt seem to be able to
connect - perhaps a dhcp issue? The standard Joggler software doesn't
have a problem connecting to my network.

It seems that android can see the network and accept the

Mmm... that's a bit odd it's a symlink. Here are the symlinks I have in

  lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2010-04-29 09:32 libportaudio.so.2 -

Hi Scaredycat - tried running your squeezeplay-runnable on an ubuntu
laptop and it runs fine but it's showing SqueezePlay version 7.3
r8740 which is quite old. Have you tried a newer version?

I've run a pre-compiled version on the Joggler but I need to play
around with layout, image font sizes, etc. I may have a look at your
fullscreen lua and see if it's better suited...

(Details over at joggler info forum).

It would be great to get the latest version of squeezeplay running on

Yes, all other Linux versions use an X server and there is a closed

The Intel PSB drivers from the Gentoo repo offer framebuffer support
and may be worth a try, but I was not able to use them yet:

They compile fine, but seem to crash when trying to modprobe psb...

I'll try again as soon as I'm back from my holidays in Italy. :-)

btw, can we try out SqueezeCommander on this build?

You cannot buy it because it has no Android Market, but you can contact

do i need to run the above commands in telnet? I have tried this but
 when I run squeezeplay with
 /media/squeezeplay-runnable/start_squeezeplay i get '
 # bin/jive: error while loading shared libraries:
 /media/squeezeplay-runnable/lib/libFLAC.so.8: file too short' error

 any ideas?

Once you've unpacked it into /media you should just use

Code:

  /media/squeezeplay-runnable/start_squeezeplay

You don't need to run any of previous commands - they were for
illustration only.

Can you check the md5sum of the tarball you downloaded just incase

Code:

  # md5sum squeezeplay-scaredycat.tar.gz
  cb73f75593fcef696b80de3fe6aa972d squeezeplay-scaredycat.tar.gz

FYI: The new Android image supports ethernet, touchscreen, sound, wifi,
shutdown/reboot by touch...

The only key problem left is the slow GUI. I would appreciate anyone
helping to solve this GUI issue. (Join #mer on irc.freenode.net!)

If you want to try it, we've created a prebuilt image that you can put
on an USB stick:

http://www.jogglerwiki.info/index.php?title=Android_Prebuild_Image

(The orginal Joggler system will not be changed, Android boots
completely from the USB stick!)

Re: [slim] OpenFrame remote for SB?

2010-04-27 Thread flattermann

Well, I've not uploaded a complete image, because it takes way longer to
download/put it on the USB key, because large parts of the image will be
empty.

I think the easiest way is to download an Ubuntu CD, boot your PC from
this CD in a Live-Ubuntu (that does not change anything on your
harddisk).

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

After booting do this:

* Insert the USB key
(* One or more windows will pop up (the current USB key contents))
* Open System / Admin / Partition Editor
* Select your USB key (/dev/sdX) in the upper-right corner
WARNING: BE CAREFUL TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT DEVICE! OTHERWISE YOU MAY
ACCIDENTLY ERASE YOUR HARDDISK!
* On all partitions on the stick (/dev/sdXn), right-click and select
Unmount
* Now, clear the stick: Device / Create Partition Table
* Now, create the 3 partitions as mentioned here:
http://www.jogglerwiki.info/index.php?title=Android_Prebuild_Image

But I'll prepare an empty image with the 3 partitions for your
convenience. :-)
When this is ready, you can put this image to the USB key and add the
contents of the torrent file to the first partition.

I've created an empty image for the Android build.
You can unpack it and dump it on the USB stick just like the Ubuntu
image and you will have the 3 (empty) partitions.

The file is only ~7kb small, but it will expand to 4gb.

http://www.flattermann.net/files/joggler/android-joggler-empty-partitions-4gb.img.tar.bz2

After that, copy the contents of the torrent download to the first
partition.

I've not tried SqueezePlay/SBS on the original OS, but it should work,
because the original OS is Ubuntu 8.04 (with a proprietary GUI called

I, perhaps incorrectly, presumed that everyone had sshd/scp running on
their joggler. If so it should take 1 minute to get up and running -
you don't even need to stop the standard interface first.

If you need any pointers just shout..

I'm not sure if you can execute scripts from flash. If you can then it
should be relatively easy to get the screen positioning correct (to
show home button). However, my thinking on this is not to integrate
with the flash interface but simply replace the flash with something
that can call any application/script. For me that would mean much more
flexibility. I don;t know much about flash but I've played with HaXe
and aswing on the Joggler with some success. The only thing is I'm not
sure I want to learn flash.

If I'm truly honest, if Android ran fast enough on the Joggler then I'd
be there running it. Until then I'm looking for something that's
flexible enough. If that means putting together some sort of front end
then so be it :D

I love them. Ok they aren't massively powerful but they can cope with
my mp3's. I took one of them and put it in a rack case with a built in
IR emitter - the idea was to put them all in a rack and control them
discretely - never got round to that :( . I still have all 5 of mine
out and in service. The display for slimrio is pretty useless but with
somehting like the SB Controller or the Joggler in control that doesn't
matter. Sync with them is terrible and they hate homeplugs (because the
networking chip in the rio is buggy and doesn't negotiate properly).

There's really no need to go about installing ubuntu to use the Joggler
as a Squeezecenter, Squeezeplay will run on it.

See attached pic or http://twitpic.com/1ipv62

There are a few minor issues but these can be addressed in code, namely
- there are no hard buttons. Touchscreen obviously works fine.

This is without having to install ubuntu - remember that linux on the
joggler is essentially ubuntu 8.04.

I had to tweak the skin to get the screen size to be correct, but
that's another minor thing. To be honest I've only worked on this for
an hour and most of the time taken was me learning a bit about lua

Wifi/Sound will probably work in the future.

My main concern is the slow GUI right now.

The Joggler has an Intel GMA500/Poulsbo graphics unit and Intel does
not really offer good linux drivers for it, yet. :-(

There is a driver, but that only works with X11. But Android does not
use X11, it directly accesses the framebuffer device...

And the Intel driver is not framebuffer capable...

That means we need to use the slow VESA framebuffer driver at the
moment... ;-(

Got that on yesterday, looking good apart from crackling sound and a
rubbish hand-writing program, need to find an on-screen keyboard!

Controlling SBS through the browser on it should be good enough! You
can get Google Chrome with a touchscreen addon.

I tried out the Mer build a few days ago... had an acceptable on-screen

easy to setup despite my minimal linux knowledge.

There is an onscreen keyboard option but its not great.

Have you seen the last bit on here http://magician.gforums.de/

Sound is deactived by default. That's because of wrong settings in the
/etc/modprobe.d/alsabase.conf file. Just remove the last line and sound
will work. With noise.

theres loads of info in amongst the useless posts on the HUKD thread
here:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/646001/o2-joggler-49-99-now-with-free-app-?

Also, someone from there has set up a hacking forum which seems to be a
good place for pulling all the info out there together -
http://www.macgarage.co.uk/Joggler.info/ It's only 1 day old so will
grow i'm sure but there's some good stuff there already. An nice gap on
there for flattermann to add his Android success when it happens!

The device looks really interesting.

One should try to install Android on it - it may be a very nice touch
tablet for Internet Browsing and more... :-)

Quidco offers 10% off all accessories from O2. I wonder if this would

Not with the default installation, by the looks of things. However
people are hacking them to install Linux and stuff.

Seems strange when it can access the internet already (youtube etc), I
wonder if they're planning a browser add-on for the app store

Interesting, might get one then while it's cheap in hope that an easy
hack turns up. I like the idea of looking up recipes in the kitchen
like that blog said, that would sell it to the other half anyway :)
