Yes, I run the Controller on an RPi (along with Pi-Hole) and it is easy
to do with well documented instructions:
https://community.ui.com/questions/Step-By-Step-Tutorial-Guide-Raspberry-Pi-with-UniFi-Controller-and-Pi-hole-from-scratch-headless/e8a24143-bfb8-4a61-973d-0b55320101dc?page=1

You can also buy the dedicated Ubiquity Controller (an RPi in a cute box
and plug 'n play) or run the Controller in the Ubiquity Cloud for free.
Great system.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox and Ubiquiti

2020-04-07 Thread JeffHart

I've been running an AP-AC-LR hardwired to my router and an AP-AC-Lite
as a wireless downlink to the LR for a few years. Would recommend
setting up a Raspberry Pi to run the Unifi controller and hardware it
into the router. I'm using an RPi 3b and it's working well. Even using
the beta WiFi AI.

Haven't taken the time to RTFM, but it looks like some of the
functionality that required a security gateway is being added to the
controller. YMMV, but having the controller and able to tweak it has
helped my overall network performance.

Most of my Squeezeboxes have been connected for between 18-20 days,
around the time I rebooted after a router firmware upgrade.

Have you run the 'RF Environment' scan for the AP via the Controller?
That should identify the best channel with least interference. Also make
sure you do not use 'Auto' for the AP radio, select the channel the scan
recommends. You can also download the Ubiquity WiFiMan app or the WiFi
Analyzer app to check for interference.

Thanks for all the replies. I know I'm getting interference on 2.4 for
sure but there's nothing I can do about it so I really wasn't even sure
another AP would fix the issue. I really wish there were a way to
upgrade the internal radio. I have actual squeezeboxes cause I like
having a screen. 4 radios, a boombox, a touch and 2 classics sitting
idle.

I appreciate the idea for having the external client AP, good idea
instead of using a powerline Ethernet cable system which I've been
considering.

I feel like if everything was on 5G it'd be fine. I'm still not really
sure the best way to approach this. I'd like to continue using the
original hardware considering the screen. I like it for a weather
station. I feel like I have no good options haha

I have four Unifi AP-Lite's and the Wi-Fi is rock solid. Running 2 x
Boom's, Radio, 3x SB3's and Transporter.

What version of UAP firmware are you using? The most stable is 4.0.66
and some of the later releases have caused various connectivity
problems. We are waiting on V4.3.8 which is at the release candidate
stage but I will not be upgrading until it is released as 'stable' and
user comments on the user Forum are positive. The Unifi Controller
dashboard should give you all the diagnostics you need to figure out
what is going on. In the meantime I suggest you downgrade to 4.0.66 f/w.

To "upgrade" an SB to match a newer standard Wifi network you can use a
travel nano-router in reverse-AP mode connected to SB player via
ethernet port. Something like a TP-Link TL-WR902AC which cost about
us$35/£35. The "n" versions are a little bit cheaper.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox and Ubiquiti

2020-03-30 Thread Tim Požár
Are you running real Squeezeboxes or something more modern? If the
older units, then getting AC access points (AP) are not going to help as
the older Squeezboxes don't support AC. It will force the APs into "N"
or a slower protocol.

I would also look around and see if you are getting interference by
other APs. Likely you are using 2.4GHz so there is a bunch of things on
that band that can also cause interference like cordless phones,
microwave ovens, Bluetooth.

There are "sniffing" applications you can run on your Mac or Windows box
to see if you are seeing interference from other APs. WiFi Explorer for
the Mac or WiFi Analyzer for Windows.

While there is the newer NanoHD AP's, I've read that the UAP-AC Long

What does everyone think? If I were to upgrade specifically for my
Squeezeboxes, what would you do?

I have an AC LR AP mounted on the upstairs landing ceiling in my fairly
large two-story house and it's running SBs with no problem in three
rooms, one upstairs and two downstairs, as well as three Chromecasts,
two Firestick 4K and a variety of other devices.
