I read you use(d) it only for video but, maybe you know if reading a CD
or playing a FLAC file from the network, the audio stream fed to the
digital outputs is sent as-is or is resampled?

Thanks in advance for any info,
Bye!

My preferred solution is to transport a computer display via CAT5 baluns
and an FM modulator to the TV sets in the house. Then just play the
video's on the computer (which itself is safely tucked away in the
cellar). Anything you can play on the PC you can watch on the TV's.

Then I use my Lirc plugin to control the whole setup with my SB remote.

The software I use is MythTV on Linux. But the same kind of thing could
be done with Windows MCE.

Peter

I've had a TViX HD-M5000A
http://www.tvix.co.kr/Eng/products/HDM5000U.aspx

And for a period I was very happy about it - stable and good quality.
But it lacks support for DRM and many newer codecs so I think its life
span is close to over.

I've not foud any commercial products to replace the TViX 5000 so Im
building a small PC. I’ve ordered a motherboard with onboad HDMI / HDCP
support, now I’m trying to build a XP embedded with support for remote
control. If I can’t get that to work I’ll just go with XP on a 4200rpm
laptop disk.
The media I’ll be playing is located on a Freenas (Hergers SlimNAS
version) I’ll connect them with gigabit Ethernet.

Cheers

Lasse

The reports I have seen (I don't have one myself as yet) recommend the
Tvix. Either the 4000 or the 5000 models, or wait for the newer
4100/5100.

Re: [slim] Video streamers??

2007-04-13 Thread bossanova808

I have a Zensonic Z500 video streamer.

The company is now called Ziova - http://www.ziova.com

The device is not nearly in the same league as the squeezebox (in terms
of reliability, build quality, or slickness), and it's taken many
firmware upgrades to get to this point, but overall it is now a decent
video player for both optical media and streaming media.

It now very rarely crashes or hangs, maintains sync almost all the
time, to be honest has few practical problems. I only use it for video
playback, have completely ignored its other features.

Annoying lag the first time you fast forward a file, and a bit slow to
boot, but the video quality is excellent on our 42" plasma and overall
the device works well for downloaded telly etc.

I have one server that serves both the music and the video, it's quite
beefy which I think helps, there's never any lag due to the server.

Until recently (Frimware 1.6.1) I would not have recommended it
overall, but now I would. Although it's picture displaying abilities
(ie slideshows) are still rubbish, which is the one other thing I would
like to use it for. But for video, it's really pretty good now, we use
it nearly every day with success.

If you want to know anything about it, just ask.

Re: [slim] Video streamers??

check out the kiss players at:

http://www-uk.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_Product_C1&childpagename=UK%2FLayout&cid=1150490628933&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=2893329179L05

i dont have one of those myself, but i do have one of the predecessor
models, the DP500 (no HD-TV, no HDD recording). it will play >95% of
the stuff people rip and encode. and there is a large number of
thirdparty "servers" in case you dont like theirs.

i am quite happy with it.

good luck,
dom

The thing you need to be aware of before you splash the cash (and
hopefully you'll pick this up in the links that have been given) is
most of the clients are not without their problems. This is relatively
new technology and certain devices are better than others at streaming
certain types of files. Therefore, before you spend too much time
ripping etc. choose your device!
Very few, if any, are suitable for mainstream use. Also, the best
server software varies amongst devices.

It's certainly an interesting little project tho. I hope you've got
lots of hair!!

Excellent section on the video streamers (I've come to the conclusion
that it takes up more time to set up than an audio only set up
unfortunatly)over at www.avsforum.com. Also some good reviews on
www.mpcclub.com
