Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2013-04-11 Thread Memford

Testing Absolute Radio UK's 60s, 70s, 90s, and 00s streams today, I
found only the 60s stream to be lossy. Looks like it's time to bug the
station with another report, as the 60s stream has been lossy for weeks,
if not months.

Your lossless stream URLs (in a *decent* player like VLC or
foobar2000):

http://icecast.as34763.net/absoluteradio.co.uk/a7flac.ogg (70s)

http://icecast.as34763.net/absoluteradio.co.uk/a9flac.ogg (90s)

http://icecast.as34763.net/absoluteradio.co.uk/a0flac.ogg (00s)

Good I will start adding some of these stations as favorites in LMS

The 128k is coming from the station http icy headers - the station is
providing misleading info. IIRC This info is sometimes used by LMS when
dealing with the metadata in MP3 and AAC streams but I don't think
metadata is provided in the OGG/Flac format.

I'm playing this 80s link right now in foobar2000 (the way to play is
copy the link, then in foobar2000, select FILE > Add Location, then
paste in the URL above. In foobar2000 it shows as a FLAC files that
bounces around a bit on bit rate from 900+ to 1170 or so. However, when
I try to play this favorite in LMS via SqueezePlay, it won't actually
play (no sound) but it does show up in LMS as a 128 CBR files. Maybe
LMS can't handle FLAC in an OGG container.

Quite right it was the wrong link. Tried again with the 80s station
using http://icecast.as34763.net/absoluteradio.co.uk/a8flac.ogg in
Foobar but it didn't connect to anything. I will try later

Just copied the 80s link and opened in foobar2000 and it plays (and is
showing as a FLAC file). Some of the other links don't work at all (so
must be off at the moment?)

Forgive the Columbo "Oh, Sir, just one more thing," but when you copied
those links, you *did* right-click to do so, right? Ellipses make a
poor substitute for actual URL information sent to the servers. Btw, as
of this post, http://icecast.as34763.net/absoluteradio.co.uk/a8flac.ogg
(Absolute Radio 80s) is working (in any -decent- media player: VLC media
player, foobar2000, and mplayer qualify).

Your guess is as good as mine. There is no set schedule for when
Absolute plays these streams. As I say in the title of this reply,
supply follows demand. Unless more of us tune in, there is less
incentive for them to turn on (more regularly). I prefer late night and
the wee hours of the morning (London time), only because that's when
they play more of the off-beat and just plain cool.

I don't normally use the osx install, but it looks like it is installed
at:
/Library/PreferencePanes/Squeezebox.prefPane/Contents/server

So download the server patch from the bug, open a terminal session and
cd to the folder above then,
patch -p0 < {name of patch file}

You may need to be root to do that and/or need to fix the permissions.

Then restart the server.

Well there are 5 absolute ones in the uk. Plus the cesnet.cz one.

Hopefully the server would be configured to refuse connections if the
number of users exceeds the local capacity of the host. So the main
issues will be with internet performance between you and the streaming
provider.

In the case of the Absolute streams they peer direct to my isp at the
local internet exchange (linx) - so the performance is only down to
their network and my isp's network.

Cesnet.cz also look to be directly connected to my isp at the Prague
internet exchange (nix.cz).

Both work for me...

Any way to test this on files rather than streams?

For testing, I re-encoded some FLAC files into Ogg FLAC, but haven't
been able to get the scanner to pick them up. With .ogg or .oga

and with .ogf extensions the files are skipped.

So, is it not physically possible on the older players, or have they
been EOLed for firmware updates?

I've tried this on my Ubuntu machine (without the .sh in mplayer.sh),

When putting on the stream it tries to buffer all the time and I can

Very sad that this does not work on the SB's, the radio channel(s) I
enjoy most has just started streaming in lossless flag/ogg :-(

The new channels are all Absolute Radio's 4 channels(From UK), sounds
great on my PC, but I did not buy my 3 SB's to sit lifeless while I
listen to Internet radio from my PC, come on Logitech, prove that
chosing SB over Sonos was the right choiche if one wants high quality

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2009-10-10 Thread bpa

Be careful about multiple "flc flc" lines. The second line "# F" , "# R
" or "# I" relate to different types of traffic - remote, file and stdin
respectively. If one of the "flc flc" rules does not have a "#F" type
2nd line then it will apply to all Flc->flc and may override an earlier
"flc flc" with "# R".

I don't think the "flc flc" rules will be applied if you have the ogg
rule implemented. However, to be on the safe side I think you should
have 3 sets of "flc flc" rules - one for each type of traffic and so you
are sure which rule will be applied to a flac file vs a flac stream.

I added them in a custom-convert.conf.

But I just noticed that it is not working 100%. When I restart SBS and
play the FLAC stream right away it works. When I have played a couple of
other streams and FLAC files it suddenly stops working. The error
message is Problem: Can't open file format.

Does this refer to what you experienced earlier?

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2009-10-10 Thread Quad

I investigated a bit more time and now my FLAC live stream is back. The
command line for Windows has to be changed to this in order to get it
run on 7.4:

Code:

  flc flc * *
  # R
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 256 -af volume=0,channels=2
-ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [flac] -cs --totally-silent
--endian=little --channels=2 --sign=signed --bps=16 --sample-rate=48000
--compression-level-0 -

My question left is: does the code above just handle FLAC streams
coming in an OGG container as it is intended to do or is it somehow
harmful to a smooth use of Squeezebox Server (eg what is the impact on
FLAC files)?

The Controller gets stuck at "Buffering 1%" and there is no sound. This

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2009-09-25 Thread bpa

At quick look at what is happening so it may be wrong.

It seems SC is ignoring the application/ogg MIME type and just using
the extension and has decided the stream is a Flac stream and not an OGG
stream and so the new rules is not applied.

Earlier version of SC used the MIME type application/ogg to trigger the
OGG-Flac rule.

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

A word of warning - the suggested 48000 solution will makew Flac assume
all streams from mplayer are 48kHz so that if you try to play a stream
with 44.1kHz you will get speed problems. A proper solution would be to
have mplayer send a WAV header so that sample rates are matched.

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

I was meaning the sample rate parameter to the flac command needs to be
matched to 48000, so in convert.conf:

Code:

  ogg flc * *
# R
[mplayer] -really-quiet -vc null -vo null -cache 512 -af
volume=0,channels=2 -ao pcm:nowaveheader:file=#PIPE# $FILE$ | [flac] -cs
--totally-silent --endian=little --channels=2 --sign=signed --bps=16
--sample-rate=48000 --compression-level-0 -

Restart Squeezcenter, then in the filetypes menu, I set the FLAC
handling of Ogg to be mplayer from the dropdown options and disabled the
others.

Sorry if this seems a silly question, but where's this flac parameter -
on the same line?

Is this line of code all I'm supposed to do to get the stream playable?
I'm only getting silence at the moment and a reported (in SC) bitrate of
128kb/s OGG. Do I have to disable some of the other options in

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

Unlike http/icy streams, mplayer doesn't seems to decode the metadata.
That said, feeding mplayer metadata back into SC is v. hard.

Prior to 7.3.3 for AACplus support - I used a trick where SC stripped
the transport protocol and extracted metadata for display on players and
then fed the raw audio stream into mplayer to decode into PCM.

I quickly tried the same approach with the ogg/flac. It didn't work as
SC seems to get confused (this is not an expected setup) and wanted to
play the stream directly.

A metadata question arised: The OGG stream of D-dur used to have tags

Is there a possibility to make mplayer show tags in Squeezecenter (for

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

You can add the lines into the convert.conf file and they will take
effect at next SC restart. You will need mplayer to be installed on the
Windows path or in the SC Bin\MSwin32... directory (same location as
faad.exe and socketwrapper.exe). However if added to convert.conf, the
line will be lost when next version of SC is installed.

Code:

  ogg flc * *
  # R

Is it possible to edit something similar into convert.conf so
Squeezecenter can handle the stream without the AleienBBC plug-in?

You might be able to do it using Virtual Audio Cable (
http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.html )and possibly VLC if
icecast doesn't work.

I'm fine with controlling Squeezecenter by a SBC but just for the sake
of the fun I installed icecast and the edcast plugin for foobar. It
works well for OggFlac streams *happy*.

Basically this set up does for me what the wave input plugin already
does but there would be one advantage over the wave plugin: If edcast
for foobar would bypass my cheap built in soundcard and catch PCM
information directly from foobar. The standalone version of edcast
simply captures whatever is playing on the soundcard, so does the wave
input plugin. What about edcast for foobar? I can see a promising dialog
saying "Recording from DSP"...

I tried something along those lines but failed, so kudos to you for
making it work.

Another use for this, would be to receive your own Icecast
transmissions from Winamp or MediaMonkey, thereby allowing one of those
programs to be the front-end controlling what is to be played through
your Squeezebox-equipped audio system.

More generally, your hack provides a method of slaving SqueezeCenter to
another media player, with ogg/flac as the lossless stream format
between the two systems.

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2009-07-14 Thread bpa

mplayer will handle ogg / flac and ogg/vorbis so it is good compromise
for live streams. Not sure what will happen with files - it depends on
the "# F " rule..

Disabling mp3 disables the ogg / flac and ogg/vorbis transcoding into
MP3 which would be necessary to have lower bitrate to a player.

Thank you guys!

According to D-dur itself they are the only station which is streaming

There is a workaround which keeps me happy for the moment. I added this

Nope, firmware doesn't have libogg or OggFLAC support. :( The flac
binary can handle this stream but requires the --ogg switch for decoding
(it doesn't auto-detect).

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

Looks like the FLAC decoder has built-in support for OggFLAC. It may
just be a matter of getting SC to detect it and tell the player to
decode with FLAC instead of Vorbis. I'm curious now so will look at that
soon.

That's pretty cool. Unfortunately we don't support OggFLAC :(

Can you file an enhancement request? Would be cool to support that in
firmware, but probably a lot of work for one station. A transcoding
solution is more realistic.

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

2009-07-14 Thread bpa

The stream identifies its types as "application/ogg" which SC type.conf
has been set up to play as OGG.

As OGG/Vorgis is a supported format - your stream will be sent to SB
which will try to decode it as Vorbis not flac.

If you disable native OGG/Vorbis decoding in Setting/Advanced/Filetypes
- then your stream will be directed to the OGG decoding rules which will
try to use sox to decode.

Howecver I don't know if sox supports playing streams (it doesn't
support ogg/flac files) so unless you play OGG/Vorbis streams - your
best chance would be rewrite the OGG rules to possibly use flac from
stdin or MPLAYER from the URL

Re: [slim] lossless internet radio streaming in FLAC!

All I understood is that there is FLAC coming in an OGG container, so
I've been messing around with types.conf and convert.conf. I don't have
a clue what I'm doing, just trial and error. Without success so far...

But I'm afraid that it's not that easy. Can anybody confirm that it's
not possible to stream FLAC by URL? Like this I could stop wasting my
time ;-)
