"a theme like the coloured ones, but non-inverted".

I don't see much, if any, real difference between those colored themes

I'm missing a feature on the mobile skin. I usually access the forum
via the New Posts page, and whereas the full site shows clearly which
threads have been updated ("The threads below have not been updated
since your last visit but still contain unread posts."), there doesn't
seem to be a similar feature on the mobile skin. Any chance we could
have some kind of indicator?

Not bad. I do prefer the fixed width. But they're all still exactly the
same theme, just a small color variation with white(ish) text and
colored links on a gray/black background. I find web pages on black
backgrounds really hard to read.

I still say the icon and underline shown at the top of every post should

In web design CSS text-shadow is used not only for shadow effect but
also for shiny emboss effects etc.

In this case there is a lot of text with white CSS text-shadow on a
white background, but that is still rendered. This effect is only
visible on quoted text that has yellow background and text looks
embossed ...

And CSS hower effect in this case adds slight gradient background to
some elements when they are hovered with pointer and causing to
re-render element/page.

I think that removing these two things would allow mobile site to render
faster on mobile devices.

On my HTC Desire this forum is definitely slow to render not like other
forums.

On my phone (iPhone4, iOS 5.1) I would agree that there seems to be
something going on to make the user experience of the mobile skin less
than ideal. My starting point for the forum is always the 'new posts'
page. Scrolling this page seems very laggy, not smooth at all. The
layout is great, and it's a big improvement on browsing the old skin on
a small screen, but it feels as though rendering the page is an
intensive process. I can't see why this should be, because the rendered
page looks very simple.

I don't know what the hover effect is, and I don't see any evidence of
text shadows. Are you suggesting these are features which don't render,
but which take time and resources to load nonetheless?

Re: [slim] make suggestions about the new forum appearance

2012-04-26 Thread carp

Using Opera (my favourite web browser), the icons on the left are
bouncing around with nearly every click I make:

13311

This does not only look strange but it makes it difficult to navigate,
too, as the lines are also jumping a little bit up or down when I click
on a forum title - which often leads to the necessity to click a forum
title a second time, because the first click made it jump out of the
"hot spot" of the mouse pointer.

Generally I think the icons are a little bit too big respectively too
eye-catching.

I think people are getting used to the new layout combined with that the
old was much better and easier to read this gives that much less people
finds the report button and report spammers .
I found it again now, it was more prominent in the old version .White
red and black triangle with " ! " now it is a triangular smudge moved to
the opposite corner .

I usually report spammers every day ( even when I'm at work ) .

So I think the amount of spam is the same but the vigilance of reporting
has gone down.

Tooltips for icons are one thing, and are usually enabled by default.
The tooltips I find annoying are when I have the mouse cursor over a
topic (or over the cell for a topic), and it gives me the first few
lines of the first post in that topic, blocking other information I may
want to see. And those tooltips are not enabled by default (in fact, I
believe there's an actual plugin that makes those tooltips appear). I
admin a forum site using vBulletin, and that site doesn't have the first
post tooltips, so I know it's possible to turn them off without
affecting icon tooltips.

Pahrump ?

The colors are nearly identical.

I think the "harsh" is from too much light space.

What do you think of this?

So if zoom in/out fixes the display, it's a browser display issue.

Sites can obviously determine the browser being used but the zoom level
needed may not be evident and could relate to font size defaults.

So if you do ctrl + and it works, is it the same when you go back later
?

Do you use Firefox? Here's a 'Greasemonkey'
(https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/) script:

Code:

  // ==UserScript==
  // @name  Meeker titles
  // @description Make "title" popups less obstructive in "forumdisplay.php"
and "New posts" views in vBulletin v4.1.
  // @include   http://forums.slimdevices.com/forumdisplay.php
  // @include   http://forums.slimdevices.com/search.php
  // @require
http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.2/jquery.min.js
  // ==/UserScript==

  $(document).ready(function() {
$('div.threadinfo').each(function() {
var tmp = $(this).attr('title');
$(this).attr('title','');
$(this).find('a.title').attr('title',tmp);
$(this).parents('li.threadbit').attr('title','');
});
  });

Fair enough - it'd be boring if we were all the same. So any chance of
a user profile setting to disable them per user?

Re: [slim] make suggestions about the new forum appearance

2012-04-11 Thread chill

I have no issues with the new look and feel, apart from a couple that
were also issues with the previous version. Since this thread is about
making suggestions, I'll raise them anyway.

1) The icon that takes you to the first new post is too small. It was
small with the old version, but it's even smaller with this version. I
browse the forum a lot from my iPhone, and with the previous version I
had to 'pinch to zoom' a couple of times so that the icon was big enough
to tap accurately. I now use the new mobile skin on my iPhone (much
better suited to a small screen, and a really welcome addition), so the
problem is solved on that platform, but on my laptop I would still
appreciate a bigger icon. Is there any reason it can't be as big as the
main 'envelope' icon?

2) I find that the yellow popups (tooltips?) are frustrating and
obstructive. I never read them, and it's difficult to know where to put
the mouse pointer so as not to trigger a popup that blocks some
important part of the screen. Is there a way to disable them on a per
user basis? Do others find them useful, or is there possibly a
consensus that they could be permanently disabled on this forum?

For what I was using the forums
- hitting 'new posts' 10 times a day
- reading it via Tapatalk the rest of the day
- writing some answers now and then

the new forum works reasonably well and I like the fresh look!
Thanks a lot for the smooth transition and especially for convincing
your corporate IT to still provide an 'alien' forum.

'Embrace change' we tend to say at work, it shows that whatever we are
working on is still alive.

I am saying the lead columns (after the featureless icon jumble) is
extremely wide and I'm still 1280x1024. (Times two monitors.)

There should be no further dispute of whether the update was expedient.
Ancient  is bad.

If you view it in a 1920 pixel wide window you're going to see a lot of
white space.

It does look like minimal effort went into fitting it into the page
framework, with the Squeezebox header and footer, but the same was true
of the previous forum skin. For example, why, if you want to have a

That was the first thing that caught my eye, or maybe didn't catch my as
