Re: [slim] are Amazon MP3s gapless on SBS?

2010-01-12 Thread andyg

I really think sites that sell MP3 files need to list more info, such as
the source format, who encoded it, etc. For example I've bought some
files from another site several years ago and they were clearly encoded
wrong and not gapless. I recently bought an album from Napster and it
turned out to be 128k instead of the usual 256. When I complained to
them, they basically said, too bad. Rhapsody's 192k MP3 files that you
get with a streaming subscription are encoded wrong and are never
gapless. They won't tell me, but I suspect it's because they encode
them from a non-lossless source.

Amazon seems to generally be better than the above examples but you
really have no way of knowing where the MP3 came from. Did Amazon
encode it from lossless, or was it provided by the record label?

Forgot to mention, one thing I've thought about doing is to buy the same
2 tracks that should be gapless from each of Amazon, Rhapsody, and
Napster, and others if possible. And then write up a blog post with
some analysis of the files and encoding. Then try to get it some
exposure to highlight the problems with selling MP3's.

Even if Napster started streaming at 192kbps, the menu would still show
128, because that value is hardcoded in there. At the time it was
implemented, that's all they had with no plans to change. If you find a
track you think is 192 let me know and I'll confirm.

Re: [slim] Napster Bit Rate

2010-01-14 Thread andyg

There's a lot of different formats Napster uses.

WMA DRM (to-go subscription). These are 192k I believe.
DRM-free MP3 purchases (128k or 256k depending on the album)
WMA streaming (128k)

We only use the 128k WMA streaming format and as far as I can see they
are all at 128k. The following chart shows the formats Napster provides
for streaming:

Code:

  Codec Container Bitrates Protocol
Windows Media Audio v9 (WMA) WMA 20, 32, 128 Kbps MMS
  MP3 FLV 32, 128 Kbps RTSP / RTMP

Re: [slim] Integration with DropBox

2010-03-24 Thread andyg

One of the benefits of MP3tunes is that it's focused on music, and they
build a basic server-side index of your music by reading the tags. Also
MP3tunes is a lot cheaper, 50GB for $39.95/year or $4.95 a month, vs
50GB Dropbox for $9.99/month.

With a Dropbox solution you'd be stuck browsing by folders I guess.

There is also no Dropbox API that I can see to make something like this
possible.

Where did you get your SB?

You should be able to update it to a normal version by connecting it to
Squeezebox Server. If this doesn't prompt you to update, press and hold
the brightness key on the remote for 5 seconds.

The original SliMP3 remote was a JVC DVD player remote, you may have
some luck if you have a code for that. It's unlikely you will find a
cheap universal remote that has a built-in code for the regular

DLNA is pretty limited, we can do a lot more things with our own server.

DLNA support could be added through a plugin, I even started working on

KISS is right. I've just added an option to the Performance settings

MySQL and uses Moonbase's config which is listed below. I expect in
the future we can also include some SQLite settings when this option is
enabled, once we determine what the best settings are.

Code:

  PRAGMA cache_size = 2;
  PRAGMA temp_store = MEMORY;

This should let the database use up to 20MB for page cache and store
temporary files in memory (used by sorts, joins, etc)

I suppose there's nothing stopping a 3rd party player app, when the GTV

Logitech development. There is interest in Squeezebox support from the
Revue group but it (understandably) wasn't a priority for 1.0.

Re: [slim] Rhapsody no longer compatible with my Touch???

2010-11-08 Thread andyg

The problem was caused by Rhapsody changing the DNS address of their API
server. There is some code to handle this case for older ip3k-based
players, but it's not necessary for SP players. Unfortunately that
code got ported from ip3k and was broken. So if by chance you were
still on a server (SBS or MySB) that hadn't restarted since the DNS
change, you would have still been able to connect to Rhapsody.

Re: [slim] Album art from iTunes to Squeezebox

2010-11-09 Thread andyg

There's an option you can enable that tries to pull art from iTunes'
proprietary database into SBS. It's very slow and sometimes doesn't
work. It's in Settings - iTunes in the web UI.

Re: [slim] Elton John concert steaming in FLAC !!!!

2010-11-29 Thread andyg

No, as the files are in OggFLAC format which we don't support. This is
not streaming either, just plain old file downloads. You can
certainly download them and then convert them to normal FLAC though.

That does seem like a Rhapsody-side problem. Did that track work before
the new firmware update?

Hmm I can play Aces High with no problems.

Can you enable plugin.rhapsodydirect debug mode (Settings - Advanced
- Logging) which might provide more info.

Re: [slim] SB2 Bricked since update

2010-12-21 Thread andyg

We've seen a small number of reports of this problem, but aren't yet
sure what's wrong.

A factory reset appears to solve the problem. From the firmware setup
menu, go to Current Settings - Factory Reset.

Re: [slim] Announcing SqueezePad - the first dedicated iPad App to controll your SqueezeBoxen !

2010-12-23 Thread andyg

Could it be caused by disabling in-app purchases? I couldn't get the
button to work either and I have in-app purchases disabled to keep my
kids from buying all sorts of crap!

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] Music-Playback arrives on iPad: SqueezePad 1.7.0 released

2010-12-23 Thread andyg

FYI Pandora blocks software players unless you have a premium account.
And Rhapsody will not be possible as it's encrypted, so don't waste any
time trying.

Napster is WMA so that's probably why.
