This puzzles me. I'd have thought a "professional writing class" is
about content and the tools to make the content permanent hardly
matter.

Did it occur to either one of you that the assignment was simply to
write a "White Paper" style of document and that the OP decided to

Wishlist item: Take this one step further and make keyboard assignment
of Styles available through either or both of:

1. Context menu when you right click on a style in the Stylist window.

2. On the Organizer tab of the style dialog.

Yes, agreed. We planned to allow shortcut assignment in the "Styles And
Formatting" window but dropped that due to time pressure.

So we could still see this in the future?

Another thing I've wished for is a character style drop-box on the
toolbar like the one for paragraph styles. That's another big reason for
me that paragraph styles are easier to use than character styles. As it
is there is no indication of which character style is currently in
effect unless the Stylist window is open and often I would like to
collapse it to regain screen real estate.

But what's so bad with having the stylist open? If you followed your
path consequently you could end up with a toolbar item for most
attributes you can think of. Maybe an optional toolbar control (not
visible by default) would be a good compromise.

That would be great. Let's face it, the default "out-of-the-box" toolbar
layout is just your best guess of what most people will want. I always
go through a process of customizing mine anyway -- drop a few items that
I never use and add a few others.

It might not be a bad idea to have the Page style indicated somewhere as
well, maybe in the Status bar, now that I think of it.

I have never been a big fan of Microsoft's way of doing things. I feel

I've never bought Microsoft's point of view that you need to get all of
your software from the same company - Microsoft. I've always felt it's
better to let lots of different organisations do what they do best.

OpenOffice.org doesn't have their own address book, but it interfaces
with lots of different address books (including Outlook if that's what
you really want to use). It can connect with Mozilla's address book,
and the 2.0 beta also connects with Thunderbirds. Thunderbird will take
care of your emails as well as your address book, and also has an add
on calendar module called Sunbird.

To access your address book from OpenOffice.org, check out File /
Wizards / Address Data Source.

Yes, this is a bug. The "name" of the function and its default menu text

Hi Jonathan

I'm still just starting to experiment myself, and I would be grateful to
hear of others' approaches.

The View Data Sources feature (F4) is very handy. From there I can view
and filter tables and queries. I can drag fields or records into my
document, or click the mailmerge button to insert address blocks or other
merge information.

I've hardly started experimenting with the possibility of using the Base
application for accessing and using address book information.

Overall, it seems to be a very flexible system which I look forward to
exploring more. I'm also sure there's a lot of room for improvement,
including cooperation between OpenOffice.org and Mozilla, for example.

There is something I don't understand under Tool | Customize | Keyboard,
choose the Edit category and you'll find those entries under Function :
Can't restore and Can't undo.
What are these shorcuts supposed to do ? I'm pretty sure it should be
Restore or Undo, but may be I missed something.

In the same category (and in a lot of other places) some functions have
the same name : you'll find 2 Links or 2 Backspace entries for example.
How the user will know which one to choose for his shortcut ?

Kind regards

I was told a later version but I'd agree that if its not very difficult
to do it should be in 2.0 or asap after.

Was it me or his comments are completely contradictory. On the first
line I read
he hates MSO and he is willing to switch. But on the second paragraph,
he wants
integration with Outlook. So my question is, if you want to switch what
are you

talking about Outlook?

If you want a mail client, there is thunderbird and if you want a calendar,
please check Sunbird. If you are switching to Linux then Evolution is a great
choice but if you are staying with Windows then the Mozilla Suite is your best
bet.

In my exclusive point of view, you have the idea of a office suite as a
PIM/communication suite (email, contacts etc) while OpenOffice.org is focused
on productivity suite (creating documents).

The only problem with smart suite is that is PROPRIETARY.

I'll be honest with you guys. I hate MS Office and I use Premium 2003. The
only reason I use it is because Outlook integrates with word for inserting
addresses. The best word processor and suite I've ever used is Lotus Word
Pro and the whole Smart Suite. Everything you right click on, all formatting
for text, table, frames is right there at your finger tips. Check it out.
Lotus / IBM's Approach database is the best. For me at least it was easy to
learn.

I could go on and on with things like this but I like to be able to share my
contact with all programs on my computer. Outlook integrates with all MS
apps and also many other programs. Also many add ins for outlook. My virus
program ViRobot integrates very nicely into Outlook.

Why not, Visio is a vector drawing program. It doesn't ship with a
cheaper version of Office, but it is a part of it.

Visio is part of office? Is that new?

Daniel.

There are many MSO versions, student, gold, premium, standard,
professional. So

I guess in one of those Visio might be thrown in.
