[discuss] DOWNLOAD PROBLEMS

2005-12-29 Thread Doug Carey
I have just tried to download your OPENOFFICE software, and after over 3 hours
of on-line time to do this, it stopped and reported that the doenload could not
continue because it was "corrupted" some how.
I don't know what else to do, and I certainly don't want to download a file
that has been contaminated by a virus.
regards,
Doug Carey

If you are downloading from one of the sites from www.openoffice.org,
then you can rest assure there are no viruses present.

Perhaps a download manager is what your after. Have a look at the
download page for further instructions on what and how these download
managers work.

I guess that you are using a dial up connection, the best way to get OOo
if you cant get the program to install is to buy a copy of OOo from your
national distributor. They are small price, they are secure and also they
might give you more goodies like extra templates, documentation etc.

This and any other problem should be addressed to the
users@openoffice.org mailing list.

It probably hasn't been corrupted by a virus. The error means that the
copy you are downloading has become corrupt (damaged) during the
download, noisy telephone lines, power fluctuations, or a dozen other
causes exist. I recommend dumping the copy you have been getting and
starting again.

I would also recommend you use a download manager that will restart from
a point before where the error occurred. They even allow you to start a
download, stop, then finish the download on another day.

Download managers are listed halfway down the page.

An additional suggestion on top of Michael's is to make sure you have your
virus scanner turned off for the download and install. Virus scanners
detect changes to files which may be false viruses. If you are downloading
OOo from the home webpage or one of the mirror sites, it is unlikely to be
any viruses in the files.

That is guaranteed with Norton's - false positives are a dime a dozen with the
Norton anti-virus.
