having issues connecting to the internet on it please make sure the iMac is
connected to the wifi and is on.

The PowerMac G5 is running OS X 10.5.8, has some games loaded as well as
iWork '09, iLife '09, and the latest tenfourfox. There are 2 accounts on
the computer, one is my own personal account, and the other is synhak, it
uses our wifi password for the login and is only a standard user not

Just like the iMac this is one of my personal computers that I am setting
up for use as a public workstation, feel free to use it for whatever you

I am looking at obtaining Final Cut Studio 2 to install on it for those
who want to do/learn some video editing.

 Enjoy,

[SH-Discuss] Interest Probe - Amateur Radio

2014-06-21 Thread William Schaffer
Hi all,

I wanted to see if anyone is interested in holding a class some time this
summer in order to earn an FCC Amateur Radio License.

A Technician license is the first of three licenses you can earn in amateur
radio, and lets you transmit in any mode (like FM, AM, SSB, Packet, etc)
from 29.5 MHz up. You also get to use 1500 watts of power (imagine 1500
watts wifi!) There are no age requirements or citizenship requirements. The
license is free.

The test itself consists of 35 questions, and you only need to get 80%
right to pass. The questions are about rules, basic Ohm's law circuits,
etc. (Think a Drivers Temps test)

As far as cost goes: I use a handheld that operates on VHF and UHF that
cost me about $80. However, you can build kits that cost as little as $15.
There is also extremely nice equipment that costs north of $3000.

More info available here: http://www.arrl.org/what-is-ham-radio

So what I need is if you'd be interested in attending a class to work
towards getting your technician license: let me know, and if enough people
are interested, we can set something up.

Thanks!

Re: [SH-Discuss] [PROPOSAL] EE Lab Test Equipment

2014-06-18 Thread William Schaffer
I'd love to see Synhak get a bench DMM.. But generally unless you buy a
really old one, they cost way over what's currently in the proposal. Here's
what I think would be best:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fluke-83V-Multimeter-/321430847786?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item4ad6c5812a

and

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sencore-Z-Meter-Capacitor-Inductor-Analyzer-MODEL-LC53-LC-53-/321436632702?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item4ad71dc67e

The LC meter is especially important for any analog work (amplifiers,
radios, audio filters, analog mixers, etc).

I hope that clears it up!

The reason I like having cheaper DMM and a nicer one too is that many
times I don't need RMS or exact numbers.

I might want to know if a circuit has continuity or know ~how much
 voltage a battery has.

Using a nice DMM for some work means that it might become dirty or
corroded. Then when needed to be used for EE work you have problems. (and
 nobody got time for that)

No need to have a class - just look at the videos and try some
 experiments in your backyard.

BTW, how much aluminum do you have in you horde? Any square or
