[Discuss-gnuradio] Excellent blog about SDR development...

2016-08-02 Thread Mike Harpe
Found this via a Xilinx Facebook posting. I don't know if this young man is
on this list but if you are I salute you. This is impressive. He uses GNU
Radio.

http://electronics.kitchen/misc/freesrp/

Your notes about the Xilinx tools made this old guy feel much better about
struggling to learn the tools. The notes about board design were also very
educational.

Re: [Discuss-gnuradio] Fwd: Creating a FFT plot like the one in this youtube variable

2015-07-23 Thread Mike Harpe
Seconded.

I am a reader of this list. I am working to learn DSP using Gnuradio and I
can tell you firsthand that you have got to do the reading. DSP is very
complex math. If you don't have that background it's very slow going. I
have had to re-learn trigonometry and basic calculus just to read the
introductory material. It's starting to make sense after investing months
of hobby time in it.

This list is an invaluable resource as well.

[Discuss-gnuradio] Report on progress with Raspberry Pi 2

2015-04-11 Thread Mike Harpe
BLUF: I can get gqrx to run but not very well. It will run for a few
seconds then hang badly. Sometimes the board needs to be rebooted.

After much goofing around getting it all setup again I ended up at the same
place.

It runs but not very well with a Funcube Pro Plus. gqrx will come up and I
do get choppy audio for a few seconds when tuned to a NOAA Weather Radio
that is very close to me.

If anyone is interested I can provide more detail. Otherwise I am going to
wait to see how this evolves.

Well, I can share my experience but I don't have detailed notes. I can try
it again and provide notes if that's what's needed.

I'll work on that over the next few days.

[Discuss-gnuradio] GNU Radio on Raspberry Pi Model 2??

2015-03-31 Thread Mike Harpe
What's the best way to get GNU Radio working on the new Raspberry Pi 2? I
have tried a straight from source compile and just installing the package.
Both methods ended up not being able to see my FunCube Dongle Pro+ due to
ALSA issues. I am not sufficiently experienced with ALSA to fix it myself.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

[Discuss-gnuradio] GNU Radio distribution and build from source.

2014-05-27 Thread Mike Harpe
I think the distribution and build system needs some improvement.

I say that because a disproportionate amount of traffic on this list seems
to pertain to building the software from source. It shouldn't be this hard
given the tools that are available.

[Discuss-gnuradio] Another newbie question

2014-03-14 Thread Mike Harpe
So I tried out the PyBombs install method as documented on the wiki. Very
nice. No worries about missing pieces, almost.

Apparently the version that is out there doesn't know how to make
python-lxml. I also cannot get the build to complete due to what appears to
be an issue with libusb.

My question is: How do I select a 'stable' release? I suspect I am getting
the bleeding edge release and I am not that adventurous yet.

Thanks! I'm having a great time with the software otherwise.

[Discuss-gnuradio] Running GNU Radio on Linux in VMware Workstation

2014-03-10 Thread Mike Harpe
I have been working for a week or so on getting GNU Radio going on a Debian
Linux platform running inside a VM.

GNU Radio is compiled and runs fine. The VM sees my Funcube Pro+ dongle.
Using 'plughw:0,0' got rid of the audio stuttering problem. After
struggling with a couple of the demo flowgraphs I downloaded and built gqrx.

It runs. I can tune it to the local NOAA Weather Radio transmitter. I use
that for testing because its very strong where I am. I have the same
problem there that I have in GNU Radio: no receive audio.

Can anyone give me some advice how to proceed? To answer the one question,
yes, I am pursuing building a Debian system on a flash drive that I can
boot natively.

Re: [Discuss-gnuradio] Issue with gr-funcubedongleproplus

2014-02-18 Thread Mike Harpe
Good day all.

I wanted to let you know that I got the gr-fcdproplus driver working. After
doing some digging around and getting nowhere I flushed my Debian system,
did a clean install, updated it to the current stable release, "carefully"
downloaded all the Gnuradio requirements, downloaded and compiled GR, then
compiled the driver.

Some part of all that worked. Now I'm diving into learning a little about
DSP.

Thank you for your time.

[Discuss-gnuradio] Issue with gr-funcubedongleproplus

2014-02-15 Thread Mike Harpe
Hello! I've gotten GNU Radio 3.7.2.1 compiled and running. I have a FunCube
Dongle Pro Plus V2 that I received in the last week.

My environment is Debian wheezy running a generic kernel.

I am getting the following when I try to run the narrowband FM example. It
has to do with the control part of the dongle. I tried the udev change with
no success. I am new to working with devices in udev so I'm sure that's the
problem.

Here's what I get...

Showing: "/home/mike/fcd_nfm_rx.grc"

Generating: "/home/mike/fcd_nfm_rx.py"

Executing: "/home/mike/fcd_nfm_rx.py"

Using Volk machine: avx_64_mmx_orc

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/home/mike/fcd_nfm_rx.py", line 405, in
tb = fcd_nfm_rx()
File "/home/mike/fcd_nfm_rx.py", line 257, in __init__
self.fcdproplus_fcdproplus_0 = fcdproplus.fcdproplus("",1)
  File

line 103, in make
return _fcdproplus_swig.fcdproplus_make(device_name, unit)
