It will depend on the census of the group. Chapter by chapter yes. What is
the web? Most likely no.

The first 3-4 chapters are software configurations. Daniel and I (thanks to
Teddy) have our laptops properly configured now and if noone needs to go
through it we will pass till there is info to cover.

The MDF is indeed a good group with good monthly presentations (down at
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta off 85 just inside the perimeter).

In fact, I'll be speaking there again, in May I think.

If you're interested in Sharepoint, I'll point out that the Atlanta .NET
user group often discusses it (atlantadotnet.org), and there is also a group
of folks here in atlanta that offer occasional free daylong training in it:

It isn't MySQL, but I ran into this user group for Microsoft SQL Server:

Basic SQL and relational database design should still be the same between
the two systems.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] OT does anyone have a favorite CSS user group to recommend?

2007-01-31 Thread Steven Ross

There is really no need to do this as you can use various techniques
to build one stylesheet to support multiple browsers. You simply set
the style to what your base browser is and then employ various
techniques (css 2 selectors) to override the base set.

ie:

#someDiv {width: 450px; padding: 0 5px 0 5px;}
html>body #someDiv {width: 460px;}

On 1/31/07, Dan Kaufman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Dusty,

Here's my approach to the cross-browser problem with CSS. The problem
begins with how Microsoft in particular "interprets" the CSS standards.
What should be a "standards" behavior for such-and-such sometimes get
embellished or enhanced in their interest of marketing. It's not just
Microsoft, Netscape can create problems for you too, and older versions of
browsers can be a problem. Basically designing with CSS becomes a
"compromise approach". Okay here's my approach:

start with, develop with the most "standards compliant" browser such as
Firefox.
keep copies of IE and NN open and check yourself as you go, looking for
failures.
It's virtually impossible to have your site render EXACTLY the same in all
browsers and versions thereof. So approach your design with some
flexibility. What works best across the top 3 browsers. But keep your CSS
standards compliant. Don't use browser specific hacks.
Most of the time it is IE that causes me the most grief. And it's very easy
to "fix". CSS means cascading, and that means as you go down the page (of
your CSS) every succeeding rule has precedence over any matching identifier
before it.

For example: if you had a style rule for say the id="nav"

#nav {margin: 0 0 0 0;

padding: 5px;

etc. } (this would set all margins to 0, padding to 5 px, etc.

And then somewhere later down the page you had the rule again:

#nav {margin-left: 10px;}

This subsequent rule would override the left margin value only. All other
rules would continue to be applied.

So, here's how to deal with a condition where IE only is messing
up your design.

In your section, immediately following your

>>>at this point, insert a Browser detection tag, and test for, say,
Internet Explorer. Then…

(whatever IF statement you need to recognize that
the browser looking at you is IE, or…)

…and the CSS file _ISEXORER.CSS contains "subsequent" rules to any in your
_Base.css file that are having problems with IE. Most of the time my
_IsExplorer.css file is only a rule or two.

The advantage here is that your "base" css file is always "standards
compliant so that as new browsers come on the market, etc. your site will
continue to run correctly. If you use browser hacks you will have to go back
and figure out where they are as IE figures out how to "follow the rules"
and your hack doesn't work anymore.

Hope this idea/procedure helps.

Dan

I went to a conference a few years ago when i worked for St. Jude
(http://stjude.org) and after it I saw the light of css and moved the
design to pure css (except for embedded content on pages where users
enter their own html through the CMS). The nicest thing was when we
needed to roll out a design. I literally uploaded the style and images
and changed 4 loc and the new design was active.

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] OT does anyone have a favorite CSS user group to recommend?

2007-01-31 Thread Dan Kaufman

1. start with, develop with the most "standards compliant" browser such
as Firefox.
2. keep copies of IE and NN open and check yourself as you go, looking
for failures.
3. It's virtually impossible to have your site render EXACTLY the same
in all browsers and versions thereof. So approach your design with some
flexibility. What works best across the top 3 browsers. But keep your CSS
standards compliant. Don't use browser specific hacks.
4. Most of the time it is IE that causes me the most grief. And it's
very easy to "fix". CSS means cascading, and that means as you go down the
page (of your CSS) every succeeding rule has precedence over any matching
identifier before it.

a. For example: if you had a style rule for say the id="nav"

#nav {margin: 0 0 0 0;

padding: 5px;

etc. } (this would set all margins to 0, padding to 5 px, etc.

And then somewhere later down the page you had the rule again:

#nav {margin-left: 10px;}

This subsequent rule would override the left margin value only. All other
rules would continue to be applied.

So, here's how to deal with a condition where IE only is messing
up your design.

In your section, immediately following your

>>>at this point, insert a Browser detection tag, and test for, say,
Internet Explorer. Then.

(whatever IF statement you need to recognize that
the browser looking at you is IE, or.)

.and the CSS file _ISEXORER.CSS contains "subsequent" rules to any in your
_Base.css file that are having problems with IE.

Dan

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] OT does anyone have a favorite CSS user group to recommend?

2007-01-31 Thread Fennell, Mark P.
Indeed. A very fun site.

http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/190/190.css&page=1
http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/193/193.css&page=1

http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/195/195.css&page=0
http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=/201/201.css&page=0

The same content all the time w/ different css applied. Wouldn't it be a
wonderful chaos to throw a different style at your users for every page
on your site -- even a different style for the same page everytime?
Sweet!

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] OT: DataBase Design Forum/Lists?

2007-01-31 Thread Charlie Arehart
Greg, you're right that design is pretty agnostic, but I'll share that I'm a
member of the MDF (which is the Atlanta SQL Server User Group--the name MDF
is a play on the filetype extension for SQL Server databases).

Sadly, I wouldn't recommend their mailing list for such questions. It's very
low-volume and many questions go unanswered. Rarely do people even discuss
fundamentals. Plus they will be very SQL Server-focused.

I'm sure there must be better places for the kind of questions Robert wants
to ask--and generic as opposed to DB-specific--though I have to admit I
don't know of any. Let's hope others will chime in.

It isn't MySQL, but I ran into this user group for Microsoft SQL Server:

Basic SQL and relational database design should still be the same between
the two systems.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] OT: DataBase Design Forum/Lists?

I prefer SitePoint simply because its one stop place for everything. They
have one group for databases and they have a special one for MySql. Apart
from sitepoint, I have heard a lot about DaniWeb
but havent used it. I use SQLServer 2000 a lot and therefore I use
http://sqlservercentral.com/ for db issues. There are some others also for
SQL Server like SQLTeam & SQLSERVER
performance

I hope it helps.

2007-01-31 Thread Greg Drake

It isn't MySQL, but I ran into this user group for Microsoft SQL Server:

http://www.atlantamdf.com/

Basic SQL and relational database design should still be the same
between the two systems.

I use MySQL but I dont think it has to be MySQL specific.

RE: [ACFUG Discuss] OT does anyone have a favorite CSS user group to recommend?

2007-01-31 Thread Dusty Hale
I'm having a heak of time transitioning into CSS layout and getting it work
across browsers. Didn't want to bombard my fellows CFers with OT questions.
I ran a search on CSS user groups but there were so many, I would much
preferr to use a recommended one. For now, I am in CSS hell. I must of done
something bad in my formal life hehe :-)

Hi,
I am a big fan of SitePoint forums. Try it. What is the issue you are
facing? Maybe you could post it in another group here(I think its called
community) that we have since this group is related to only CF related
issues.

Dusty,

Here is the email to an EXCELLENT css user group. Once you get signed up
you'll probably get too much traffic from the list. But there are some real
pros out there that can help you.

Re: [ACFUG Discuss] Building my IDE Tool Box

2007-01-31 Thread Ajas Mohammed

Hi,
Since we are discussing DW & Eclipse, I wanted to ask this question. In
DW when you have site configured and open a file, the full path is shown on
the top i.e. Macromedia DW 8 - \\10.10.10.2\wwwroot\Proj1\a.cfm, but in
Eclipse you have to hover over the tab of the open file and it doesnt give
you the detailed info. Is there anyway to make eclipse show the full path on
the very top where it says CFEclipse - Filename -Eclipse SDK?

One cool feature in Eclipse is that you could double click the tab of the
open file you want to work with and it hides all the other views/windows.
When you are done you can double click the tab again and you can see other
views/windows. In DW you have to manually hide other views/windows.

Ajas Mohammed.

Sorry about that MC.

Similar to MGD Draft and MDG Lite, there is MCG Amber, which has a light
stature with a bold amber style.

I will try not to botch up the name next time. =)
