Re: SOPA bill question
You're right of course, James. There's not anything django-development related that can be done. But there are a lot of bright minds reading this list and most of the subscribers on this list appreciate that there's a difference between off-topic noise and something that is actually soap-box worthy. But the mission is accomplished now that the word has gone out. If you want to actually do something, get on it. If you just want to pull out your hair and talk about how much "you wish someone would do something" than that's another matter. If django needs to be hacked on to add support for decentralized domain registration or to include some additional DNS related support that comes out of the SOPA workarounds, I'll be the first to submit a patch. /Climbs down from soap box. peace, Ryan McIntosh Software Architect PeaceWorks Technology Solutions ph: (204) 480-0314 cell: (204) 770-3682 r...@peaceworks.ca - Original Message - From: "James Bennett" To: django-developers@googlegroups.com Sent: Wednesday, December 28, 2011 11:07:53 AM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: Re: SOPA bill question Folks, we've had three different members of core point out that, important as it is, this is a topic for another list/forum. James, This SOPA bill thing probably concerns more open source communities than you could think of, including Django development, and discussing about it should be a good thing, not a bad one, as far I understand the problems it creates. If you feel that there is a space that needs to be filled, have at it -- it doesn't cost anything to create a mailing list, so create one, announce it and and start discussing. You don't need an official blessing to do this sort of thing; build it, and see if they come. The only time you need any sort of official blessing is if you want the project as a whole to make some sort of official statement. This would require us, as a project, to work out how we would collectively endorse such a statement, and would probably also involve the DSF engaging lawyers and the like to make sure we weren't putting the project as a whole at any sort of risk. Re: SOPA bill question
While this bill certainly merits discussion, and may indeed be related to sites created with and using Django, this forum is not the place for it. Please do not continue this thread here. -Paul -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Django developers" group. I, for one, am against it, but would prefer to discuss it in a proper forum. Hm, I suppose you're right. This maybe slightly off-topic but still I would be interested to understand how this could affect open source development and in particular dynamic web site development which involves UGC.. Finally blacklisting web sites on the basis of copyright violation sure sounds like a big trojan horse to manipulate the internet DNS system IMHO. http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/nov/16/sopa-condemned-internet-blacklist-bill -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Django developers" group. SOPA bill question
Hi, I'm curious and at the same time a little worried by the upcoming "SOPA" bill, which would imposes in US new laws for blocking down websites and user-generated content on the basis of copyright violation. What thus you Django developers all think of this proposed law and how could this may affect open source communities such as Django and Python to develop novel apps specifically for creating user-generated content? https://duckduckgo.com/?q=SOPA+end+of+internet -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Django developers" group.
