Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide - Update and Review Process

2020-05-19 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Kees,

Good question!

If we follow the process, then I think that the tracking spreadsheet will
already have enough information. A file should be ready for second review
if:
(1) The first review is complete, indicated by the relevant "Return date"
being populated.
(2) The author has moved the file from Feedback to Draft, indicated by the
Status column showing "In Draft".

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide - Update and Review Process

2020-05-18 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

To clarify my own thoughts and, hopefully, to help anybody else who wishes
to be involved, I have tried to write down the steps involved in updating
and reviewing one chapter of the Calc Guide. Please see below.

(Please note that I am not intending to define the steps involved for any
other guides!)

If anybody feels that what I have written is illogical, or not in
accordance with the Team’s agreed procedures, then please let us know
through the mailing list.

Regards,

Steve

(1) Initial update.
(a) Author copies master version of source file from relevant folder in
Nextcloud to own computer. The master version of the source file would
usually be found in the Published folder for the previous issue.
(b) Author enables recording of track changes and edits the chapter as
required.
(c) Author updates first part of file name to reflect issue of document and
adds initials and date to file name (for example,
CG6408-PivotTables-SF-09May2020).
(d) Author copies updated file to Draft folder in Nextcloud.
(e) Author amends tracking spreadsheet to reflect status of updated chapter.

(2) First review.
(a) First reviewer amends tracking spreadsheet to indicate that he / she is
performing the first review.
(b) First reviewer copies updated file from Draft folder in Nextcloud to
own computer.
(c) First reviewer enables recording of track changes and reviews file.
This may result in edits to the text to fix problems or may involve
inserting comments that need to be addressed.
(d) First reviewer adds initials and date to file name (for example,
CG6408-PivotTables-SF-LMO-16May2020).
(e) First reviewer copies updated file to Feedback folder in Nextcloud.
(f) First reviewer amends tracking spreadsheet to reflect status of updated
chapter.

(3) Responding to first review.
(a) Author copies updated file from Feedback folder in Nextcloud to own
computer.
(b) Author inspects proposed changes and accepts all that are acceptable,
discusses with first reviewer any significant rejections or comments that
need resolution.
(c) Author accepts all changes to date and returns updated file to Draft
folder in Nextcloud.
(d) Author amends tracking spreadsheet to reflect status of updated chapter.

(4) Second review.
(a) Second reviewer amends tracking spreadsheet to indicate that he / she
is performing the second review.
(b) Second reviewer copies updated file from Draft folder in Nextcloud to
own computer.
(c) Second reviewer enables recording of track changes and reviews file.
This may result in edits to the text to fix problems or may involve
inserting comments that need to be addressed.
(d) Second reviewer adds initials and date to file name (for example,
CG6408-PivotTables-SF-LMO-KK-25May2020).
(e) Second reviewer copies updated file to Feedback folder in Nextcloud.
(f) Second reviewer amends tracking spreadsheet to reflect status of
updated chapter.

(5) Publishing.
(a) Author copies updated file from Feedback folder in Nextcloud to own
computer.
(b) Author inspects proposed changes and accepts all that are acceptable,
discusses with second reviewer any significant rejections or comments that
need resolution.
(c) Author accepts all changes to date and removes all initials and dates
from the file name.
(d) Author returns updated file to Published folder in Nextcloud.
(e) Author amends tracking spreadsheet to reflect status of updated chapter.

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: 6.4 Calc Guide – Reviewers Needed!

2020-05-17 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

Thanks again to those who are helping with the review of the Calc Guide.
All chapters are now updated and available for review, so there is plenty
to read for those who have any time to spare!

I am not sure how these things work for other guides, but would it be
possible to adopt the following process for this guide? When the second
reviewer has finished his / her job on a chapter, it would be great if they
could leave the document in the Feedback folder with their comments still
tracked in it. That way, if there are any changes at second review, they
can be seen by another pair of eyes (mine!) before being accepted and moved
into the Published folder.

At the moment I am happy to look at all Calc Guide comments that arrive in
the Feedback folder. I’ll check them, accept them (unless they are
obviously wrong in some way), and then move the file on to either the Draft
folder (for second review) or the Published folder (when finished).

I hope that sounds okay to everybody.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Notebookbar

2020-05-17 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Jean,

Thank you for that. I agree that it makes sense to put one general
description of these facilities somewhere in the next issue of the Getting
Started
Guide, and referring to this from the other guides.

In the relevant component guides, maybe they should also be mentioned
(briefly) in the Setting up and Customizing chapters too? This is because
of the appearance of related settings in two places:

   1. In Tool > Options > LibreOffice > View > Icon size > Notebookbar.
   2. On the Notebookbar tab of the Tools > Customize dialog.

I'm currently working on this chapter for the Calc Guide (hence my interest
in this topic!) and could easily cover these controls therein, at a very
high level. Is it sensible for me to do so?

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Notebookbar

2020-05-16 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

It appears that some aspects of the notebook bar are now enabled in the
default 6.4.3.2 build (i.e. they are not experimental). Examples are the
user interface options of Tabbed, Tabbed Compact and Groupedbar Compact in
Calc. There are also various related user interface options available in
Writer, Draw and Impress.

Have we thought about / agreed how these options should be covered in the
affected guides?

[libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide Chapter 6

2020-05-15 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Leo,

Thanks for your helpful comments on Chapter 6 (Printing, Exporting,
E‑mailing, and Signing). I have actioned them and returned the document to
the Draft folder ready for second review.

I have also updated the section entitled “Controlling printing” so that it
now describes the layout of the Windows version of the Print dialog, with a
statement that the layout of the dialog may be quite different on other
installations. I believe this was the course of action recommended at the
last Documentation Team meeting.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Chapter 4 and 5 of Calc Guide 6.4

2020-05-06 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Leo,

Thanks for the comments on chapters 4 and 5. I have addressed these (apart
from notes below), removed the tracked changes, and put the latest versions
in the Draft folder ready for 2nd review.

Exceptions are:

   1. In Chapter 4 (Styles and Templates), at step 2 just after Figure 19.
You wondered why the text “Template > Spreadsheet” had been deleted. If you
right-click on a default template in the Templates dialog, then the context
menu contains a menu option that is simply “Reset Default” – hence the text
   deletion.
   2. In Chapter 5 (Using Graphics), at step 2 in section entitled
“Inserting an image from the clipboard” at the top of page 7. You asked,
“As the paragraph refers to copy an image from a LO document, isn’t it the
same operation for all modules?” I have not implemented any change because
the introductory paragraph above step 1 reads “Using the clipboard, you can
copy images into a Calc spreadsheet from another LibreOffice document and
from other programs”. The reference to “other programs” means that this
step should not try do define the detailed step(s) for copying an image
into the clipboard. The “other program” could be anything!
   3. In Chapter 5 (Using Graphics), at step 2 after Figure 8. The document
states that when you choose a tool on the Drawing toolbar, the Formatting
toolbar is replaced by the Drawing Object Properties toolbar. You suggested
adding the text “becoming a floating toolbar”. I suspect that this addition
is only true if the Drawing Object Properties toolbar was floating last
time it was displayed – when I did the actions specified the toolbar was
docked. I therefore propose not to add the additional words.

I hope these exceptions are okay. If not, get back to me.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Chapter 2 Entering, Editing, and Formatting Data

2020-05-06 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Leo,

Thanks for the comments on chapter 2. I have processed them, accepted most
of the changes, and returned the file to the Draft folder ready for its
second review.

For the record:

   1. With respect to your comment about the white space after Figure 3. I
agree that this needs to be reduced but feel that reducing the size of the
figure isn’t necessarily the best way to do it. And now isn’t necessarily
the best time to implement any fix, while the chapter is still potentially
changing. So, I propose to address issues like this throughout the book,
once all chapter updates are finished.
   2. With regards to giving some more information how to customize the
formatting of numbers, the Help system includes much information about this
   – see the page entitled “Number Format Codes” at

https://help.libreoffice.org/6.4/en-US/text/shared/01/05020301.html?DbPAR=SHARED#bm_id3153514.
I don’t feel we need to replicate this information in the Calc Guide but
have added a sentence in the section entitled “Formatting numbers” to draw
the reader’s attention to the extensive help description.
   3. Regarding my proposed removal of the note from the “Numbers as text”
section, I am struggling with the logic of including a note that is
incorrect with respect to how 6.4 works. Do any of the other guides contain

2020-04-26 Thread Stephen Fanning
Thanks Leo.

I have accepted the changes in the Preface and Chapter 1, and both are back
in the Draft folder ready for a second reveiwer.

With regards to your comment on Chapter 1, page 15 (about changing the
direction of focus movement for the Enter key), I agree that more needed to
be said as per your comment. However I changed the wording you proposed -
please let me know if you aren't happy with what is now written.

Many thanks Leo.

When returning comments, I think we normally put the updated file in the
Feedback folder. On this occasion don't worry, I've moved the Preface and
updated the spreadsheet accordingly. Worth bearing in mind in future though.

Was there a technical reason, or was it a simple oversight in the master

[libreoffice-documentation] 6.4 Calc Guide

2020-04-24 Thread Stephen Fanning
 All,

As discussed and agreed at yesterday’s Documentation Team meeting, I am
planning to create an updated version of the Calc Guide for 6.4. I have
created a suitable folder in NextCloud and put a status tracking
spreadsheet there.

Being in strict lockdown at the moment, I have time on my hands and propose
to implement the changes required myself. This approach will obviously help
avoid distracting others from their current tasks. However, as I update
each chapter and upload it to NextCloud, I hope that other team members
will be willing, and have time, to review the updates.

To get us started, the first draft of the updated Appendix A (Keyboard
Shortcuts) is available for review. This has been significantly changed
since 6.2, including many more of the available shortcuts and explicitly
specifying the key combinations for all operating systems (including
macOS). The scope of the update means that changes from the previous issue
are not tracked in the document. I expect that individuals may feel that
they can only check the shortcuts for one of the operating systems – this
is absolutely fine but please make a note in the tracking spreadsheet to
indicate which OS you’ve used so that we can ensure full coverage before
issue.

Many thanks in advance for all help that you can offer.

Regards,

Steve Fanning

[libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide files

 Hi Olivier,

I am aware that you have been doing some experimentation with the 6.2 Calc
Guide files to investigate problems with the generated PDF.

Have you made any significant changes to any files on your computer that
need to be put back into NextCloud? Or shall I start work on a 6.4 version
using the files in the */LibreOffice Documentation/English/Calc
Guide/6.2/Published* folder in NextCloud?

Re: Fwd: [libreoffice-documentation] Multi-threading in Calc

2020-04-23 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Luboš,

Many thanks for your thoughts on the checkbox, which confirms what I
expected.

As for the processing itself, I remain unclear about how Calc allocates
tasks to threads. Can we give the user any general advice on how he could
structure his spreadsheet to gain the maximum performance benefits from the
availability of multiple cores? Or maybe there are ways to organise a
spreadsheet that will frustrate Calc's attempts to multi-thread, which we
ought to advise against?

Any further help would be greatly appreciated.

[libreoffice-documentation] Multi-threading in Calc

2020-04-22 Thread Stephen Fanning
 All,

I am considering the changes necessary to upgrade the Calc Guide to 6.4.

One of the issues we chose to ignore in the 6.2 Calc Guide was
multi-threading. The 6.2 Calc Guide contains the following mention of it,
when describing the Tools > Options > LibreOffice Calc > Calculate page:

CPU threading settings section
Enable multi-threaded calculation controls the use of multi-threading /
parallelism, which can be used to speed up LibreOffice Calc calculations on
computers with multiple processing cores.

That’s it in the Calc Guide, and I couldn't readily find anything in the
Help files.

Is there a slightly more detailed explanation anywhere which might
enlighten me further, so that I can in turn include a little more
information for the user?

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide for LO 6.4

2020-04-19 Thread Stephen Fanning
 All,

I have (finally) finished my 2nd review of the draft Getting Started with
Base chapter of the 6.4 Getting Started Guide. Many apologies for the time
this took, but that was mainly due to the number of significant issues that
were found in the document when I downloaded it after the 1st review had
concluded.

I am recommending that this chapter re-starts its review cycle and Dan
Lewis has kindly agreed to do the 1st review of this update.

The updated file is in the Drafts folder (with changes tracked).

[libreoffice-documentation] Keyboard shortcuts in the Calc Guide

2020-04-13 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

I would be grateful for opinions please from some of the experienced
members of the team.

As you may be aware from previous emails I’ve sent to the list, I have some
reservations about Appendix A to the Calc Guide entitled Keyboard
Shortcuts. The can be summarized by two main points:
(1) I think there are a significant number of omissions from the issued
version.
(2) I feel that this is one section of the Calc Guide that should be
specific about macOS aspects because it is not always possible to predict
the Mac equivalent of a Windows/Linux key sequence.

I have therefore produced an embryonic update to this chapter and I would
very much like feedback on what people think. Please do not embark on a
full review because I haven’t finished the detail yet (I expect the list of
shortcuts to be complete but I still have work to capture some of the macOS
key sequences). However it would be worth getting some initial feedback on
the approach – if it’s felt to be an inferior idea, then I wouldn’t want to
spend time polishing it! I suppose the main question is whether the
proposed approach would be helpful to users.

I have uploaded a PDF copy to NextCloud, see
https://nextcloud.documentfoundation.org/s/6Kgz5TmSog9iMD3. Let me know if
you have any problems accessing the file.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Issuing a book

Olivier,

I seem to recall that you experienced one or two problems when you collated
all of the individual chapters of the 6.2 Calc Guide to produce a master
document.

Please could you give me an overview of what is involved in this process
and where the problem areas lie? I've used master documents and
subdocuments in an older version of Word to manage some large technical
documents but haven't done this in LO yet.

[libreoffice-documentation] Query on Base Table Creation Wizard

2020-03-25 Thread Stephen Fanning
Please could one of our Base experts advise me?

I am reviewing Chapter 8 of the draft 6.4 Getting Started Guide and am
missing something. I have followed the text in the section entitled “Using
the Wizard to create a table” and have selected the fields without incident
(matching Figure 4). However when I press Next to go to page 2 of the
Wizard (Set field types and formats), things go awry. I can only see the
Field Name on the right hand side of this area – no sign of Field type,
AutoValue, Auto-increment state, and Length.

If it makes a difference, I am running on Windows 10 using LO 6.4.0.3. I’ve
also tried on Ubuntu Linux and no difference.

Any help gratefully received, and aplogies in advance if I'm being stupid!

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Bug 129171 - currently assigned to Olivier Hallot

2020-03-15 Thread Stephen Fanning
 Hi Olivier,

Please could you advise of your current thinking with regards to Bug 129171
("No entries in Help system for Calc functions FLOOR.XCL, FLOOR.MATH and
NETWORKDAYS_EXCEL2003").

I am particularly concerned that the help files contain details of the
CEILING.XCL and CEILING.MATH functions but do not provide corresponding
information for the FLOOR.XCL and FLOOR.MATH functions.

Also, for all three functions covered by this bug, are we happy that the
help files do not describe the syntax of a call, even though all are
individually selectable through the Function Wizard?

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] LO Help files - potential improvements

2020-03-14 Thread Stephen Fanning
 Hi Olivier,

As you are aware I am doing some work collating information about Calc's
functions.

For each function, I have been comparing the syntax specified in the
Function Wizard against the syntax specified in the Help files. This
process has left me with some queries / suggestions about potential
improvements to the Help files.

Please could you have a look at the file called "Calc Functions - some
suggested improvements to Help files (batch 1).odt" that I have left in the
".../Calc Guide/Related materials" folder in Nextcloud which lists the
issues that I have noticed regarding functions in the Mathematical category.

I would like to get your thoughts about the points I have raised before I
continue this process further.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Possible improvement to Calc Guide

2020-03-13 Thread Stephen Fanning
I would like to hear the opinions of members of the Documentation Team on a
potential improvement to the Calc Guide.

As you probably know, Calc provides a library of over 500 functions. The
6.2 Calc Guide includes an Appendix B entitled Description of Functions
which occupies over 70 pages (not an enjoyable read!).

Calc's Function Wizard provides the user with facilities that help insert a
function call into a cell, providing text explanations that indicate the
purpose of the function and giving high level details about the function's
parameters. In addition, the Help pages provide further relevant details of
each function, including examples.

Behind the scenes we are also developing a wiki area to provide yet more
detail on the Calc functions, aimed at covering any technical details that
are beyond the scope of the Help pages (see
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Calc_Functions).

Having been responsible for the major update to Appendix B in the 6.2 Calc
Guide, I am unsure of the role of the information in that appendix. At the
moment it is not entirely consistent with the text in the Function Wizard,
nor is entirely consistent with the text in the Help pages. There is
therefore scope for conflict and / or confusion between these various
sources.

I would like to propose that the appendix in the Calc Guide be updated so
that it provides exactly the same information as is on the Function Wizard
- no more information, no less information and no "improved" text. This
would have two main advantages:

(1) The English text on the Function Wizard is readily available as preset
strings in the code, embedded in various .hrc files. This means that the
new appendix would be easily created (I've done it and placed a draft copy
in Nextcloud; see file CG6418-CalcFunctions-SF-13Mar2020.odt in the
English/Calc Guide/Related materials/ folder) and, importantly, can be
easily checked by a reviewer who has no specialist knowledge.

(2) Browsing functions in the Function Wizard requires many mouse clicks -
having a set of straightforward tables containing the same information in
the Calc Guide may be useful to some users, helping them to discover
functions that they were not previously aware of.

I would be interested in your thoughts.

Regards,

Steve Fanning

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide for LO 6.4

2020-03-08 Thread Stephen Fanning
I have completed a first review of Appendix A (Keyboard Shortcuts) and
placed the updated document in the Feedback folder.

I am concerned about the section entitled "Shortcut keys for drawing
objects" (which only occupies one page). It is not an area that I am very
familiar with and was I unable to find / verify operation for many of the
shortcuts mentioned. This might be due to my unfamiliarity (most likely) or
could be due to inaccuracies in the section (less likely but not
impossible). Please could somebody who is familiar with this material give
the page a quick review?

Steve Fanning

[libreoffice-documentation] Use of the Escape key

2020-03-07 Thread Stephen Fanning
I am reviewing Appendix A (Keyboard Shortcuts) of the Getting Started Guide
v6.4 and have a question which somebody may be able to answer for me.

In a section entitled “Getting help”, the following description is given of
the Escape key’s function in the context of help information: “In
LibreOffice Help: goes up one level. For Help online, the key is handled by
the browser”.

Is the first part of this text a throwback to an old method of providing
help? If so, is it correct to say that this key is now handled by the
browser irrespective of whether the help is local or online?

Regards,

Steve Fanning

[libreoffice-documentation] Saving formulas in MathML

In Math you can save a formula either in .odf or .mml formats.

Can anybody say at which Math build the .mml option changed from MathML
1.01 to MathML 2.0?

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Calc Keyboard Shortcuts

2020-02-27 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

I have collated a set of shortcuts found in Calc (across Windows, Linux and
Mac OS) and produced a report which can be found in the
*LibreOffice%20Documentation
> English > Calc%20Guide > Related%20materials* folder within NextCloud -
file name *Review of Calc Shortcuts (Issue 1)_27Feb2020_SF.odt*.
This document lists all the shortcuts that are identified on the buttons in
the Menu bar and all the shortcuts that are listed in the Tools > Customize
> Keyboard dialog. In the case of Windows and Linux, I have exercised the
majority of the shortcuts and verified their functions.

I have however struggled verifying the functionality of some of the
shortcuts with a Mac (its hard doing so using a virtual Mac without a
suitable keyboard). If anybody has some time on their hands and a Mac to
run the system on, then perhaps they could help?

I will further update the document when I have time to incorporate any
other shortcuts that I can discover from the help files or other sources.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Calc Keyboard Shortcuts

2020-02-10 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

Following up on this email from a few weeks ago, I have started collating a
more comprehensive list of the implemented shortcuts across operating
systems so that we can raise bugs on the Help (if required), update books,
etc.

other views welcome.

[libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide, Chapter 4 (Writer)

2020-01-29 Thread Stephen Fanning
Jean,

I'm doing the first review of this chapter.

In the context of writing for our target audience, I was surprised that
within a first introduction to the Writer Sidebar, we are describing
features that are only available by selecting "Enable experimental features
(may be unstable)" in Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Advanced.

Would it be less confusing or worrying for a novice user if we removed
these references from this chapter of GS?

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide for LO 6.4

2020-01-14 Thread Stephen Fanning
I have completed a first review of chapter 2 and returned the file to the
Feedback folder, including tracked changes and embedded comments. I have
checked it against 6.4 builds for both Linux and Windows installations. I
hope the changes and queries are helpful.

I recommend that Jean has a chance to review my changes and comments before
anybody else takes the chapter for a second review (and have added a
comment accordingly to the tracking spreadsheet).

I intend to do a final check tomorrow against a macOS installation for
completeness.

Fwd: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started Guide for LO 6.4

2020-01-13 Thread Stephen Fanning
Kees & Jean,

Just for the record I have rejected one of my own review comments in the
version in Published. On page 6, I had errioneously changed a button legend
from the correct US nomenclature ("Use LibreOffice dialogs") to the
inappropriate UK nomenclature.

Apologies for any confusion.

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Calc Keyboard Shortcuts

2020-01-10 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

As I mentioned in a previous email, I have done some work to collate a list
of known Calc keyboard shortcuts, detailing the discrepancies between the
software and the Help files. This is in the form of a reasonably large
Writer file containing tables, which can be found in NextCloud (.../Calc
Guide/Related materials/Calc Keyboard Shortcuts (windows only) v2.odt). As
the file's title suggests, I have only considered the Windows shortcuts so
far, ignoring Linux and macOS.

This work seems to indicate signficant mis-matches between what the system
provides and what is documented in the Help files.

I am happy to do the work necessary to identify the changes necessary to
align the relevant Help files and Calc Guide chapter with the implemented
shortcuts (in Windows, Linux and macOS).

Does anybody have any relevant thoughts before I embark on this task?

Regards,

Steve Fanning

2019-12-22 Thread Stephen Fanning
I have completed a first review of Chapter 17 and returned the updated file
to the Feedback folder. All my changes are tracked in the document.

The only significant modifications I made were to the shortcuts associated
with Pivot Tables. Unfortunately I believe that the Help files might be out
of date in this area and have raised bug 129554 to address this issue.

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: Understanding Calc keyboard shortcuts

2019-12-20 Thread Stephen Fanning
Olivier,

A further update on this issue is that I have identified over 50 keyboard
short-cuts that are identified in the Tools > Customize > Keyboard list but
do not appear to be described in the Help files. I have a list but have not
attached it to this email to avoid information overload.

I'm now even more confused!

By the way, I forgot to mention in the first email that I'm only looking at
the Windows installation at the moment - I've yet to delve into the Linux
and Mac equivalents.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Understanding Calc keyboard shortcuts

2019-12-20 Thread Stephen Fanning
Olivier,

I came away after yesterday's team meeting thinking that I understood, but
I was wrong!

There appear to be a significant number of shortcuts described in the Help
files that should not exist according to the list of Calc shortcuts to be
found in Tools > Customize > Keyboard. I have included a list of such
shortcuts at the bottom of this message.

Is there a technical reason why these shortcuts are described in the Help
but are not listed in the Tools > Customize > Keyboard dialog? Am I missing
something?

Regards,

Steve

The list is:

   - Alt+Enter
   - Alt+Enter+Shift
   - Shift+Ctrl+Enter
   - Ctrl+Enter
   - Alt+Page Up
   - Alt+Page Down
   - Ctrl+ ` (the ` key is located next to the "1" key on most English
   keyboards)
   - Ctrl+F1
   - Shift+Ctrl+F4
   - Shift+F7
   - Shift+Ctrl+F11
   - Alt+Right Arrow
   - Alt+Left Arrow

[libreoffice-documentation] Re: 6.2 Calc Guide chapter 14

2019-12-16 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Jean,

While performing the review, I have noticed that the figures in this
chapter appear to have been generated from a Mac.

Would it be preferable to replace them with Windows 10 equivalents and, if
so, would it help if I did so?

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Wiki-based description of Calc functions

2019-12-14 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Regina,

Apologies, my previous response was not sent off the list intentionally - I
hit the reply button and forget to change the email address!

I have already changed the standards heading for ABS as you suggested and
will ignore compliance with ODF v1.3 for the moment.

I will insert a category "Functions not contained in the Wizard" as a
heading at the bottom of the page listing the function categories. I will
also insert MULTIPLE.OPERATIONS in the alphabetical page of functions. I
don't speak many words of German but will try to make sense of the linked
page at some point.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Indexing of Calc Guide chapters 8 and 9

2019-12-11 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

Following discussion at last week’s team meeting, I have updated Chapters 8
(Pivot Tables) and 9 (Data Analysis) of the 6.2 Calc Guide to (hopefully)
improve the indexing of those chapters. Please note:

(1)Before doing anything I copied the latest files for those chapters
from the Draft folder to the Archive folder. I appended today’s date to the
names of these files to aid recognition.

(2)For each file I have used the Compare Document function in Writer to
verify that the text of the document is unaffected, only the indexing
fields.

(3)I copied the updated files to the Draft folder.

Since the text of these file is unchanged from that already reviewed, my
updates should need no specific review. They will of course be
sanity-checked when the index is produced after Jean pulls the whole guide
together.

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Base Handbook progress

2019-12-07 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

I tend to agree with the thought that dropping first drafts into the
Feedback folder rather than the Drafts folder isn't very intuitive.

But more importantly, when I joined the team earlier in the year, I really
struggled to understand the in-use workflow because it didn't match the
documented workflow (i.e. Jean's diagram). I think this is a really
important consideration with regards to transparency of our procedures.

I would be in favour of reverting to the previously established and
documented workflow, especially if it wasn't really broken in the first
place.

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Help pages for CALC functions OPT_* (Bug 92084)

2019-11-27 Thread Stephen Fanning
Hi Olivier,

A couple of weeks ago you mentioned Bug 92084, which relates to the absence
of information in the Help files for the OPT_BARRIER, OPT_PROB_HIT,
OPT_PROB_INMONEY,
and OPT_TOUCH functions.

Appendix B of the 4.1 Calc Guide contains descriptions for each of these
four functions. Could that material be used to populate the missing Help
pages?

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Suggestion

2019-11-27 Thread Stephen Fanning
I agree that it would be good to create a separate handbook to describe
Calc's functions and I will spend time creating a first draft of this
during the coming months.

As for the relevant chapter in the Calc Guide, I worry that it is now too
thick following the addition of so many new functions. My latest draft is
80+ pages. I suggest we retain it for the moment but I'll try too remove
excess verbage from descriptions that appear unnecessarily detailed. It
would be nice to shorten it a bit before issue!

I tend to agree with Jean and so when a separate handbook becomes
available, the chapter should be withdrawn from future issues of the Calc
Guide.

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Suggestion

2019-11-26 Thread Stephen Fanning
Olivier,

As you are aware I have noted some discrepancies between the Function
Wizard and the Help system with regards to the descriptions of the 500+
Calc functions. I have kept a list of the issues found so far and will
raise bugs in due course.

However the scope of cross-checking the available sources of information is
wide and I’ve only really scratched the surface so far while updating the
relevant Calc Guide chapter.

Once I have completed the draft Calc Guide chapter, I would be prepared to
carry out a more systematic and thorough cross-check of the function
descriptions over the next few months, as a background task. Would that a
worthwhile exercise?

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Descriptions of Calc Functions

2019-11-26 Thread Stephen Fanning
All,

I am putting the finishing touches to an updated version of Chapter 18 of
the Calc Guide (Description of Functions) and a question occurs to me.

At the moment we seem to have at least four user-level descriptions of the
500 or so functions offered by Calc. These descriptions are contained in:

(1)The Function Wizard;

(2)The Help files;

(3)Chapter 18 of the Calc Guide;

(4)The wiki.

Are there any linkages between these sources of information, apart from
humans copying and pasting chunks of text around? Has the possibility of
using a single source approach ever been considered?

Regards,

Steve

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Calc functions not described in the Help system

2019-11-11 Thread Stephen Fanning
Olivier,

Thank you for that information. I didn't previously know about META bugs
and was also interested to find 108827 (META for the Calc Functions).

As you are probably aware, I'm currently working on Chapter 18 of the Calc
Guide (Description of Functions). This is a somewhat bigger task than I
imagined but that's ok, I'm battling through it.

In working through this chapter I have found a range of problems with the
Function Wizard and the (built-in / online) Help pages. These fall into
three rough categories:
(1) Cases where the Help system doesn't address a function (see earlier
email). An obvious knock-on in these cases is that the Help button on the
Function Wizard won't work sensibly for these functions.
(2) Cases where although the Help system does include a function's
description, the Help button on the Function Wizard doesn't appear to be
linked to the correct item in the Help system.
(3) Cases where there are inconsistencies between the description of a
function in the Help system and its implementation in the Function Wizard.

I suspect the most efficient way for me to proceed is to carry on updating
the chapter and at the end of my task, raise all the problems / bugs /
inconsistencies in one go. At that point I'll try to avoid covering
problems that are already in the system (e.g. the inclusion of OPT_
functions in the Help).

Does that make sense?

Regards,

Steve

[libreoffice-documentation] Calc Guide, Chapter 9, Data Analysis

2019-06-21 Thread Stephen Fanning
I wonder whether anybody could help me with two areas of uncertainty that I
have with Chapter 9 of the Calc Guide, Data Analysis.
Firstly, Figure 21 in the existing LO4.1 version of this chapter shows the
Solver dialog with an Options button. However the dialog accessed through this
button is not shown or discussed. Was this an intentional omission or would it
be sensible to describe the Options dialog within this chapter of the updated
Calc Guide?
Secondly, I note that the LO6.0 Getting Started Guide implies on page 157 that
statistical data analysis tools accessed through the Data > Statistics menu
will be described in Chapter 9 of the Calc Guide. I did not see any such
funtions described in the LO4.1 version of this chapter - are we intending to
extend the scope of the updated Chapter 9 in this way?
Regards,
Steve Fanning

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Pivot charts in pivot tables chapter?

2019-06-07 Thread Stephen Fanning
 Hi Olivier,
Thank you for that.
I had seen your material on pivot charts and am putting it to good use in
drafting the update to Chapter 8.
I am grateful for the information on the PT cell styles which was new to me.
I'll add a small section to cover this useful feature.
Regards,
Steve

 Hi Steve and Team

In case you have not stumbled up on the Help, I wrote some lines there,
and I have a demo file where you can exercise numbers.

https://help.libreoffice.org/6.3/en-US/text/scalc/guide/pivotchart.html?=CALC=UNIX

also, for pivot tables, one recurrent user question is how to format
pivot tables cells. The solution exist but somehow hidden.

On creating a PT, several standard cell styles that are added to the
Styles list in the document. Each style is applied to part of the PT.

Pivot Table Cell Styles:
Pivot Table Categories
Pivot Table Corner
Pivot Table Field
Pivot Table Result
Pivot Table Value
Pivot Table Title

Once you customize the PT styles, then

1) you keep the cell style when updating the PT (and that is crucial
because when you direct-format a PT cell you loose its format when you
update the PT)

2) All PT's in your document will have the same look (same styles
applied to all PTs)

Regards

Olivier

Does anybody still have a copy of the spreadsheet used previously, so
that I can maintain consistency and use it when creating new figures
for the 6.2 version of this chapter?
