that is not my call, and in any case you should probably confirm what I am

I'm still trying to figure out the conditional content. I have gone over it

Where is everyone? Is no one willing or available to review anything?
If not, then I'll just publish them as is. Quality assurance on
documentation is desirable, but if we hang around indefinitely waiting
for people, it means nothing gets published.

Chapters are here:

http://www.odfauthors.org/libreoffice/english/writer-guide/drafts-v4.2/

We haven't heard from JohnS in over 2 months, so I'll go through the
chapter (number 12) that he had checked out; I've changed the status
on the Tasks page. That will be the last one to complete this book.
(And I do hope John's okay.)

No, I'm not going to spend my time trying to find other people to do
the reviewing work. This list has a lot of people on it. If everyone's
too busy, that's understandable. If you're waiting for a personal
invitation, someone else will have to fill that role.

If you're not sure what "reviewing" is, read Chapter 2 of the
Contributors Guide, here:

https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development#Contributors_Guide

Note that you do NOT need to be any kind of technical expert -- what
you do need is to follow the instructions in the chapter and see if
they make sense and if the illustrations match the program and the
text. Big deal, eh? It would be nice if you also correct any errors
you find, but the most important thing is to identify the errors.

You do NOT need an ODFAuthors login to download these files; I've made
them available to all. You do need a login to upload any amended
files, or you can send them directly to me and I'll upload them. If
you don't want to amend files, you can send an email to the list
itemising what you've found.

Hi Jean

I agree with you. My problem, coming recently to volunteering, is that it's
hard to actually know what to do. Some mentoring or at least direction
relating to tasks would be most useful, even though it seems to go against
the grain of 'volunteering'. By the same token, rigidity is no good;
volunteers have other lives to lead and sometimes those lives take over.

I'm staging a return to authoring after an absence of some years, and
volunteering for documentation tasks seems a good way to build up recent
experience on my CV. However, I need to specifically identify and access
the tasks there are in the Libre Office Documentation team and, you know,
that's a bit of a problem for me right now. So mentoring and a bit of steer
would be most welcome!

I do a bit now and then, but I have not been doing it consistently,
have no intention of doing it consistently, and will probably be doing
even less in future. I've been saying this for months, but is anyone
listening?

If we can't find one or more volunteers to take on this sort of
responsibility, perhaps we should make a case for TDF to fund someone,
at least part time? IMO we would need to hire someone with experience
in technical communication, project management, and mentoring new team
members. Preferably someone with experience coordinating volunteers,
so they don't have inappropriate expectations of giving people
assignments and getting the work done to a schedule. (No, I'm not
looking for a job.)

I'm not at all sure that would help enough, because we would still
need people who have both the time and knowledge to do the actual
work. Our problem, AFAICT, has not been in attracting volunteers. The
problem is attracting -- and keeping -- the right volunteers: that is,
people with the time and knowledge.

BTW, I find it both encouraging and discouraging to note that the AOO
Docs group appears to have the same problems that we do.

Peter,

I won't bother uploading a file to highlight these 2 very minor typos:

Page 6 - Hiding Slides, point 2 - "greyed"!
Page 11 - Applying Animation Effects, point 4a - there is an extra space
between "effect" & "when"

passwords. If this for some reason isn't working (I had some reports
about the capitals being automatically transformed into lowercase
letters and then the login didn't work) then please reply to me
directly and I can give you the default password I'm using and you can
use that to login and change the password then without using the link.

And Girvin, no, as far as I know, it was not our intention to get rid
of all the inactive users. Andreas, who did the migration, ran into
some problems, when he was trying to move the database with all the
users. The import didn't work. And he was on a tradeshow last week and
didn't have time yet to fix everything.

Sigrid

Hi Sigrid, my timlloyd account is also "not found". If you could create
a new username for me that would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

No doubt there are errors and omissions in the revised file, so please

I guess the index will be regenerated anyway but it looks broken (EG):

Hi,

Chapter 2 - all good.

I was about to check out "impress" so I'll leap to chapter 6

Page 161 - Step 5, a) b) etc need indenting
Page 164 - Modifying Slide Elements. First Line, "as well" should read "as well
as"
Page 168 Formatted Pasted Text - Step 4, a) b) etc need indenting
Page 169 Text Boxes - Point 4 refers to Page 169 rather than "below"
Page 169 Create a new outline level. The sentence after point 5 reads
"different outline style.," I am guessing that should be a full stop only
Page 174 Creating a new slide master. I think the first sentence should begin
"Creating a new slide master"
Page 181 using the Presenter Console. End of first sentence modify to "has been
connected to your computer".

I'll go back to the start and go over those chapters next.

Hi Tim The thing I usually do is select the file and then in the "Actions" menu
item, select "Check out". This locks the file, creates another copy in the
folder, and you take away a copy to work on. Have 'Record changes' enabled when
you open the document on your system to work on it, change what you think needs
changing, or make suggestions, leaving comments (Ctrl+Alt+C) giving your
reasons. Save the file on your system and change the filename by adding an
underscore, your initials, an underscore and alter the date. So
_JAS_TL_01Feb13. The date I do this way because I hate those long
strings of numbers which are messy and differ country to country. When you're
done, go back to ODF, select the checked out copy in the folder and then in the
"Actions" menu, select "Check in". Go to the "Feedback" folder, select 'Add
new' and 'File' and upload your commented file. Once it's uploaded, go to the
Draft LO 4.0 folder and delete the file from there. Inform the list you've
uploaded a particular file. This may not be 'by the book' but it's what I've
been doing, and works. Regards JohnS On 03/02/2013 05:01, Tim Lloyd wrote: >

[libreoffice-documentation] GS4008 - Getting Started With Base

2013-02-07 Thread Tim Lloyd
I finished going through Dan's draft version of this doc a couple of days ago.
I notice Jean has now updated the doc into the published folder. Most of the
handful of glitches I noticed were cleared up by Jean but here are 3 anyway:

P16 Step 3 - Add subform fields

This step is exactly the same as step 1. The only difference is
I would suggest
This step is similar to step 1. The only difference is
P41 - note at the end refers to http where the "h" is in a different colour and
is in italics.
P43, 3rd para, end of 2nd line - "can be contain" should be "can contain"

Cheers
Tim

Thanks for the heads up John.

Must remember to look at the whole screen not just the bit in front of me.

[libreoffice-documentation] Draft LO 4.0 Chapter 4 - Getting started with Writer

2013-02-02 Thread Tim Lloyd
Hi, I downloaded the writer guide from the ODF website but I could not see any
obvious way to set status to locked. A quick look at 3.6 shows all this text is
also current. However...

P9 "Moving quickly through a document"contains this sentence (below the
figure):

The Navigation toolbar (Figure 7) shows icons for all the object types shown in
the Navigator, plus some extras (for example, the results of a *Find* command).

"shows" and "shown" in the same sentence? "shows icons for all the object types
 /displayed/ in the Navigator" perhaps?

P12 The paragraph below "Selecting a vertical block of text, the last sentence
contains a number of "or" clauses. I think these would look better bulleted
 P14 The Caution:
Use *Replace All* with caution; otherwise, you may end up with some hilarious
(and highly embarrassing) mistakes.
Personally I would be emphasising the embarassing while acknowledging, in
brackets, that the mistakes may be hilarious.

 Cheers
 Tim

P344 1st Key in brackets "See example of using an index key on Page 344" could
read "see example of using an index key below"
 P365 item 2 has the list items g) h) i) j) should be a) b) c) d)

Nit picking: the following Figures show a full stop rather than colon:

 Figure 345 on Page 342
 Figure 346 on Page 343
 Figure 347 on Page 345
 Figure 348 on Page 347
 Figure 349 on Page 349
 Figure 350 on Page 350

Page 264 - Adding A New Theme To The Gallery 1) refers to Fig 263. I think this
should be Fig 278 on page 263
 Page 266 is blank
At the end of page 273 point 2) has i) j) which I assume should be a) b)
Page 295 Point 3 in the note is out of alignment
 Page 302 is blank

One for the future: at various different points there are references to (eg)
Ctrl+C & Control+C. this should be standardised and I would suggest using Ctrl+

You wait for ages and nothing, then 3 come at once...

 P234 3 - e) f) g) h) should be a) b) c) d) I can't help thinking Tom has
already flagged this but I can't find the email anywhere
 P236 is blank
P240 Insert Picture Dialog Box point 3 See "inserting an image file below". I
think this should be "Linking an image file below"

Likewise, happy to be involved. I don't have an ODF authors account yet.

I am not really sure where to look for work though so any hints would be
appreciated.

I'll be happy to be active, maybe even contribute to a rewrite if needed.
Would probably not be until V4.1, as I notice that LODev 4.0 is nearly finished.

 Hi :)
I think it's a good idea to rethink some of the documentation but there is
seldom enough time for it! We need more people actively involved in order to
help rationalise and streamline the Guides. However, there is other work , such
as the built-in help and video tutorials that would also be good to look into
developing through this list.

So, don't be shy about asking about the validity of screen-shots or
suggestions for better phrasings but please don't be discouraged if there is a
lack of immediate response!
