[Dorset] Bournemouth Pub Meeting Tonight, Tuesday 2015-12-01.

2015-12-01 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Hi,

It's the pub meet tonight at The Broadway, 8pm-ish. For those that
haven't been before look out for a flip of laptops or Terry's stuffed
penguin. Or perhaps a Pi Zero.

http://dorset.lug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=meetings%3Apub
http://dorset.lug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=members#terry_coles

As the first web page above says, we are often in the pub's "snug", a
small room off the right end of the bar. But it isn't reserved for us
so we're sometimes to be hunted down elsewhere; often, to the far left
of the bar. We like corners. And mains sockets.

See you there.

Cheers, Ralph.

Hi Clive,

Replying to the list as you probably meant it to go there given I don't
know about Windows!

Sounds like
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface#Secure_boot
is getting in the way and you need to either disable it in the BIOS,
returning to Legacy booting, or add the KEK of the media you're trying
to boot to the BIOS's list? I've not done anything with UEFI so it's a
complete guess on my part based on Google "Acer Aspire Switch 10 boot
from usb dvd", i.e.
http://superuser.com/questions/878637/how-to-boot-acer-aspire-switch-10-from-external-media
and
http://www.tomsguide.com/answers/id-2538379/acer-aspire-sw5-012-refuses-boot-windows-recovery.html

Cheers, Ralph.

It's an Acer Aspire Switch 10 with M%8.1 but the old couple cann't get
on with it. I have an external DVD drive which is 'seen' at boot time
but will not boot from. Tried looking at the 'bios' and managed to
get the DVD as first drive but no luck.

Cheers, Ralph.

Will it boot from USB? I'll bring along a USB stick with Zorin on it if
you want.

I can bring my Pi Zero, but it'll be a static display I'm afraid; I'm still
waiting for my keyboard/
USB hub combo from Amazon, so I haven't even been able to get it to run beyond
the NOOBS
startup menu, since I can have a keyboard OR a mouse. but not both (and
definitely no USB
WiFi dongle).

Even if I had all that in place, I'd still need a monitor and that seems to be
a bit too much
hardware to lug around.

The all-in-one swiss army knife which has gparted etc. is System
REscueCD which easily installs onto a small pen-drive.

http://www.sysresccd.org

Consider also using fsarchiver (also on that distro) to copy a
partitions content without having to resize the destination ie.
you fit the used size not the partition size.

I was going to bring my Pi and stuff. I have a USB dongle, and USB
keyboard. and HDMI cable. All we need to do is reprogram that big TV in
'our' room! PS, my HDMI cable is full size both ends. That might be a
problem with Terry's zero.

I already have the cable kit that came with my copy of MagPi, so the HDMI cable
is OK. I would still
need a USB hub to connect more than one device to the Pi Zero though.

Also, even if we get 'our' room, I'm not sure that the pub would be too pleased
about us hi-jacking
their Telly!
