Any ideas?

Did you fetch a new copy of the VMWare Installer from their site or try to
install the one you had archived? I had an error when I tried to run my
archived copy, but it went away when I got the latest.

The version that worked was V12.1.1-3770994.

Exactly-- I used my old version. I'll try the new one.

Just as an aside, why use VMWare rather than Qemu/KVM?

I moved off VMWare some time ago and not looked back - even converting
some of the old images.

Cheers

[Dorset] Bournemouth Pub Meeting Tonight, Tuesday 2016-05-03.

2016-05-03 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Hi,

It's the pub meet tonight at The Broadway, 8pm-ish. For those that
haven't been before look out for a flip of laptops or Terry's stuffed
penguin.

http://dorset.lug.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=members#terry_coles

We are often to the far left of the bar in the corner, near a mains
socket. But it isn't reserved for us so we're sometimes to be hunted
down elsewhere; often, in the pub's "snug", a small room off the right
end of the bar. We like corners.

Cheers, Ralph.

I only use VMWare for a couple of my old Windows Apps; a Satnav update tool
and to read my electrical monitoring meter at periodic intervals.

I used to use VirtualBox, but always had problems with USB support. While it
was supported by Sun, I was prepared to jump though a few hoops, but when
Oracle took it over, and began to get FOSS hostile, I went to VMWare which I'd
used at work on Windows.

I'd be interested to learn if it is possible to import my Windows XP VMware
image into Qemu/KVM and if it is likely to support USB access as well as
VMWare.

Certainly supports USB as I use it to read a secure USB stick which only
has windows software, a plantations USB headset and a USB scope.

KWM does support VMware disk image formats but also allows for
conversion to more efficient storage, example:

kvm-img convert -O /qcow2/ /myWinXp.vmdk/ /myWinXp.qcow2 CHeers Si /

Hmmm. On my machine kvm-img returns 'command not found' and I've been unable
to find a package that includes it. I did find this on the internet earlier
today

qemu-img convert -c -p -O qcow2 vmname.vmdk vmname.qcow2

but after I had run it, the VM refused to start.

I have now discovered that the QT qemu launcher (aqemu), also allows for
importing VMWare images and so I am running it now.

I'll report on the results later (or tonight at the pub) since I'm going out
shortly.
