[Dorset] Rebuild checklist
Hi, Does anybody have a checklist for rebuilding their linux installation? It is time to rebuild mine, which is dual boot XP and Kubuntu. I am in the process of backing up my data from the xp partition and my home area at the moment. Next is to make a list of my desired applications in kubuntu, and backup the browser password file and favourites. What other things do I need to check for? Then I intend to repartition the disk to get rid of XP. Any help appreciated. Not a check list but I always keep a copy of configuration /etc etc. for reference. I also backup and reinstall my home area (being careful to change the owner if the uid/guid has changed). The home area contains a lot of application data and important stuff like your ssh keys in .ssh I have recently done away with dual boot too going straight into Linux and using a hypervisor to run P2V versions of my windoze systems. Hi Peter, Then I intend to repartition the disk to get rid of XP. Could the current partition layout not be edited to what you want with GNU PartEd running from a live USB distro? You'd still want to back-up beforehand in case it all goes wrong but it would save having to install Kubuntu. Hi Peter On 24/10/13 11:50, Peter Merchant wrote: Hi, Does anybody have a checklist for rebuilding their linux installation? It is time to rebuild mine, which is dual boot XP and Kubuntu. I keep a Wiki. I put some of it on the LUG Wiki a while back. Over time, I've found it better to keep separate Wiki pages on each application rather than on each upgrade. The great thing about your own Wiki is that it's searchable. I am in the process of backing up my data from the xp partition and my home area at the moment. I always keep backups of /etc, /var/local, /usr/local too. But my kubuntu is giving me problems when I am moving about within a website on all flavours of browsers that I use. It tends to 'hang after a couple of in-and outs. I stuck in a replacement computer up here ( to prove that it wasn't the wireless link or the new router) and it worked fine so I have come to the conclusion that it is something in my linux installation and think that the best way to clean it up is to go for a complete rebuild. I would let the rebuild take over the entire disk as part of the job, with a separate partition for /home and /swap Point 0 of the checklist should be to download the desired distro! Re: [Dorset] Rebuild checklist
Hi hello Just joined the list so greetings to all. (will post a hello soon, boring you all the my vitals) If you want to backup the whole disk try clonzilla, booting from a CD/DVD you can clone the whole disk to an internal drive/USB HD/SMB share. Is fast and very reliable, only issue I have found with it is support for software raid.
