Yes it seemed fine to me. Jitsi was limiting the resolution to 360p,
but the image was nice and clear.

It seemed to work okay for Jitsi though, so that's good (I used by

Re: [Dorset] Recommendations for webcam?

2021-01-19 Thread Hamish McIntyre-Bhatty
Thanks for all the suggestions.

So in the end, I got this generic one:
https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0899RJQ95/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8=1

This was mostly because of cost. It can do 1080P, but (and this is a big
but) it has issues depending on the mode it's used in. It can only do
1080P30FPS in M-JPEG mode, without audio. If you use YUYV the framerate
is poor unless you use VGA mode. I have not tried the built in mic. So
unless like me you don't plan to use the mic, I wouldn't recommend this.
It is very cheap though.

Here's the output from v4l2-ctl --list-formats-ext:

Hi,

I bought my webcam during the first lockdown as I needed it for meetings. At
the time a lot of Logitech webcams were either unavailable or very expensive -
I didn't need anything fancy, just something that worked and gave a reasonable
image and audio.

I bought a papalook webcam from Amazon
(https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07HF56LX8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8=1)

It works fine out of the box with Fedora 32 and 33 with Zoom. For use with
Microsoft Teams (used by my employers) required one minor config change to get
the audio to work (had to add my local account to the 'pulse' group I think).

Using online tests of the webcam indicated that it gave a good image, and the
audio was okay (it was clear enough). My colleagues confirmed that both of
these were fine from their end.

Overall I'm very happy with the webcam.

If you're a little bit security paranoid like me, I also bought some webcam
lens covers too
(https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B075VYMPHW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8=1)
These are trivial to fit and work fine.

I'd expect Linux support to be good. USB has defined a USB Video Class,
UVC, and most cameras claim to conform to it. For background
information on many Linux topics, the Arch Linux wiki is useful:

I have a cheep Omnivision Webcam that used to work years ago with Linux, but no
longer does. It does work with the R-Pi though.

And the other cheap one given to me by my son in law does work. Neither have a
brand name on them

Product: USB2.0 Camera

[44825.580819] input: USB2.0 Camera: USB2.0 Camera as /devices/pci:00

I did have a Trust one for awhile, but for some reason I took it apart and
never got it working again.

Correction: The Omnivision webcam does work, just not with Cheese on this
computer. I tested it with cheese (didn't work) and with Camorama on my old 32
bit laptop running xubuntu and it worked, so I tested it with vlc on this
computer and it works.  And it works in jitsi.

The moral: choose your test software well. Cheese has known faults of this
sort. Camorama not recognized in Discover on Kubuntu.

Mine's a Logitech Quickcam Deluxe S7500, which unfortunately is no longer
available. This gives a good clear image and includes a built-in microphone.
and a lens shutter I don't recall ever having any problems getting it to
work; I just plugged it in and made it the default device for audio and camera
inputs.

Unfortunately, Logitech seem to have stopped making low(er) cost Webcams. On
their site the cheapest don't have all the features that mine does unless you
pay £80-£90. I'm sure I didn't pay that.

There seem to be a few on eBay:
