RE: [drakelist] Aux 7 IC's

2004-05-03 Thread Graf Ulrich ICM MP PD ST 2 ULM 1

Hi,

general coverage transmission with the TR-7 is not recommended since the transmitter
low pass filters exhibit extreme mismatch on other frequencies than the standard
amateur bands. Even for satisfying operation on the WARC bands I had to redesign most
of the filters for proper reflection coefficient.

The Aux 7 can be bypassed by cutting one trace on the mother board,
opening up the TR-7 for general
coverage t/r. See archives for details.

I have a very early model TR-7 converted by Drake to the A model. Since
the WARC bands have been opened in the 1980s, I've used the transceiver on
30, 17 and 12 meters which are not standard with this radio but which can
be accessed quite easily.

No redesign of the filters has ever been necessary. This was a point Drake
Service itself made to me in July of 1987 when the conversion to A and the
opening of the transceiver to WARC were made.

Re: [drakelist] tr4c recieve buzz

2004-05-03 Thread w1id

Of 3 AC-4 power supplies I own, one has always had excessive hum. The
previous owner told me he tried to replace the negative bias filter cap to
no avail. After looking inside, the only difference I could find was the
troublesome supply had much smaller interconnecting wires from the supply
to the TR-4. Normally you would expect something around #24 but these
looked like #28. One solution was to use a piece of braid from the supply
case to the TR-4. There was some voltage drop between the supply and
transceiver but I don't remember what it was now. Another thing you might
want to look into is perhaps borrow another supply which is known to be
good and compare the two. If you get similar results then you know it's
the TR-4. As someone else mentioned, it could be a tube. Make sure also
no-one has fooled with the AC switch wiring inside the transceiver.

Checked temp replaced c 145 and it still buzzing. I think
Ive effectively ruled out the radio as the source of the ac.
The only thing left to change in the PS is the bias supply cap.(pair of
20uf.150v) I dont have anything close to that value small enough to fit
under the chassis. Ill go looking around today.

Maybe there is some heater-to-cathode ac leakage in one of the tubes.
A quick check of all tubes on a good tube tester might show the
culprit. Also, a lead on the heater string may not be dressed
properly due to previous repair, or factory QC problem. Let us all
 know what you find.

Well I recapped the ac3 completely and changed all the diodes.
changed c 135 (shorted) on the audio board. Changed the audio tube
still buzzing away. Anything else to check?

Re: [drakelist] Aux 7 IC's

2004-05-03 Thread Pierre Rothenburger

It seems to me that we have two seperate questions ongoing here - - and
answers :

 1° emulating/programming Aux-7 board . 2° Emission out of Ham-bands or
WARC ( though a consequence of 1°).

For the 1st part I saw indeed on a webpage a diodes programming/soldering
scheme, but I never used it as I have got a Aux-7 board waiting still to be
mounted.

2° But the 2nd part from Ulrich , DK4SX, scares me. Is it so that out of
former standard Ham-bands, those fixed filternetworks mismatch the PA and
the 50 Ohm output?

More specifically : Is there a mismatch between the pair of PA MOSFETS
output impedance and the following input-impedance of those filterbanks ?
If so what is an estimate of that mismatch ( SWR?). Does it eventually kill
the MOSFETS.( I bought a faulty TR7 - consciously ! - which turned out to
have dead PA transistors , including their drivers . I don' t why there
were. Who wants this to happen again?

So what Ulrich wrote might well be an issue (for us Hams on WARC) but
wonder whether Drake wouldn' t have addressed this in the first place as
these rigs weren't designed for Std- Ham - bands applications only but I
beleive for the whole shortwave range as well?

In short, what is the experience out there on WARC bands w.r.t above issue (
part 2°)?

[drakelist] L-7 plastic inserts...

2004-05-03 Thread Allen \(Marty\) Martin

I have one with a scratch and was trying to find a replacement. If there are
replacements available I would like to know. Also if they are not would any
other of the list members need a replacement? I am thinking of checking
around and perhaps getting some made. This would be the insert or cover for
the meters installed by removing an end cap and sliding it in the channel.

[drakelist] Filters for non-ham use

2004-05-03 Thread Stu Greene

Mike, there was no implication at all. I simply wrote that since WARC
bands became legal (17 and 12 meters and then 30 meters) I've been using my
TR7 (TR-7A) quite happily on those bands.

There's nothing to resent. I bought the rig in 1979 and while I was
chasing DX I worked all there was with this transceiver and some have been
on the WARC bands.

I asked Drake if making the alteration to transmit outside of the ham bands
(160 through 10 meters) would damage the transceiver and the answer was No.

And to make things really difficult I can use my L-4B, new in 1978, on the
WARC bands simply by reducing the power somewhat.

I have a Drake station. It's worked everything that it's heard since 1979
and the C Line did the same before that. No implication was made that your
engineering is poor or that you know nothing about what you're doing. I
simply contributed the truth. Drake and the transceiver get along quite
well on WARC.

 With kindest regards

Re: [drakelist] Aux 7 IC's

2004-05-03 Thread Russ Hines

Hi Pierre:

I wouldn't worry about using your TR7 on 30m, 17m, or 12m amateur
bands. It will work just fine as it came from Drake. No adjustment
of the low-pass filters are necessary. Unless you have reason to
suspect the filters have been tampered with, I wouldn't worry.

I might point out that the TR7 was repackaged for commercial and
marine service and called the TR77 and TR-4310. These radios were
used just about everywhere but the amateur bands. The only
difference I know of between these radios and the TR7 was the PTO
was replaced with a synthesizer similar (if not identical) to the
RV75.

Pierre, you have discovered one of the drawbacks to a free and open
Internet:

Anyone can post any sort of nonsense they want. You did the right
thing to ask.

Russ
