Dave,

Though plans haven't been finalized, yes, there will be a Drake Forum. The
committee is open to comments, questions, etc.

Dan,

Do you still have an R4B for sale?

If so, are they early or late production models. The late production used a
FET in the PTO rather than a bipolar transistor.

Although I live in Canada, I live right next to the US border and can receive
packages in Danville WA 99121.

What would shipping costs be to Danville WA 99121?

I could pay via PayPal or USPS Money Order.

I would like to use it for our Drake stuff but be able to use ssb too without
unplugging. All cleaned up now. I can remember buying it at a war surplus

I also have a Lionel-made J-47, but no spare parts. I still use my J-38

T4X: Front panel is reasonably clean with no scratches only few
smudges. Transmits OK on CW no clue how SSB is as I don't own a
mic(sorry) . Previous owner neatly installed a zero-beat 'spotting'
relay (closeup photo link below) driven by foot switch RCA phono jack
in spare hole on back left bottom. Finals are fair - 160/80/40=110W
80w=20m 75=15m 50w=10m Crystal for 160m included! $115

AC4 Power supply. Original - no mods EXCEPT the drop-kick off the back
of the UPS truck on it's corner. Believe it or not the AC4 works FB!
Alot to be said for Drake gear!! Voltages are right on. I believe
it's only case damage. Haven't taken the case off to see what's inside
but if memory serves me there's nothing in that corner but air? Case
could be pounded out? $70

R4B Front panel has a few minor scratches. Previous owner added
crystal filters modification via 1970s QST for "better" selectivity?
Modification was done neatly using existing holes and brakets w'perf
board( see photos. Switch added to front panel in the phone jack hole.
This receiver works but I think it could stand an alignment. Audio
sounds a little fuzzy to me and sensitivity low. Or rit could be the
band conditions?? I have the original parts that were removed for the
xtal filter mod. Could be easily restored to stock? $130

Package: $300 (Shipping excluded)

Jim -

Loss of control bias in ANY transmitting tube is a problem.

The problem here (as in so much electronic equipment) is that
electrolytic capacitors have a finite lifetime. Unfortunately it's
WIDELY variable, and just about impossible to predict which cap is going
to last 50 years, and which will only last five years. Or less.!

The capacitors that are causing "most" of these failures are all over 25
years old, well past even the most optimistic reliability expectations.
Hams being hams, they will use them until they fail, rather than take
any sort of preventative maintenance steps.

Fusing is not quite that simple, since the short term peak currents
associated with off-resonance operation during tuning can be pretty
large. As with most fused circuits, it's a narrow line between blowing
when you lose bias and blowing every time you're a little slow tuning up!

Another problem is that the fuse may have to clear up to 700 VDC
depending upon the condition of the tube.

Bottom line is, keep your power supply in good condition (update ANY
"original" AC-4 with an AC-4R upgrade kit) and make sure your Cinch
connector is plugged in firmly and doesn't have to support the weight of
the entire power cable. You're good for another 10-20-30 years,
probably longer than you're gonna need the T-4X(any)!!

I see that tube bias is a big problem in these
sets.

Any chance of fusing the cathode resistors
to would help stem the bias problem ?

Do you think a couple of cathode wired-in-series fuses
work ?
