Re: [drakelist] L-4PS hum
[EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Joe, I've rebuilt an number of L4B supplies and have found in several cases of hum, it was caused by a mechanical "resonence" if you will between the outer case and the transformer core. Reshaping the case or putting stiff foam rubber between the case and core can help. While I've not done this on an L4PS, I have cured hum on some other transformers by flowing flowable RTV onto the windings, from above, let it cure, then from below. Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but only if a winding is loose. The flowable RTV is sold as windshield sealant for cars and is flowable where standard RTV is not. If a lamination is loose, then tightening the bolts might help. 73, Evan**It's Tax Time! Get tips, forms and advice on AOL Money & Finance. [drakelist] L-4PS hum
My L-4PS has developed a hum (buzz). When it's cool and I set the amp at low tap (CW) it's quiet. It begins to buzz on the high voltage position. Later when it warms up a while, even the low voltage tap causes it to buzz (hum). I know it's the transformer. What is my best option? I do not dare try to rewind it. New transformers are expensive but its that the best way to go? I hate to throw good money after bad and buy a used transformer from another L-4PS. Suggestions? I'm sure many of you have been down this road before. TNX es 73, Joe-WC4R www.wc4r.com www.rothweb.net www.williamsburgwx.com

Lew, I have something here, but I am not sure what it goes to. Re: [drakelist] mic question
Peter, You might get by using a line matching transformer. You've got a high impedance mic, going into a low impedance input circuit. Line matching transformers are available at most places that sell microphones. Also, you might try using W2ENY? or something like that. Its advertized in QST and on the net. He sells pre-amp/equalizers in kit form that will do the same matching job plus much more. Particularly if its a broadcast mic, or said a better way, a full range mic, you can tailor it to the input to your voice characteristics. As for a preamp, you probably don't need one, since many of the old mics were fairly high output. Just try matching it up first. Oh, just remembered, Heil sells a transformer to go from a low mic to a high imp. input. Probably work in reverse as well. Its small enough to fit in a stand base...possibly. [drakelist] TX mic amp Soft?
Curt Nixon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Got another question as I bring my R4A/T4X out of hibernation. After tuning up, if I use the tune position on the T4 and set the drive gain, it will be much higher than if I close the key. ie. I need to use a much higher setting when the T4 is running from the key instead of in Tune. I seem to need to run the gain to max to get any kind of output kicking while in SB also. Does this sound like the 12Ax7 mic amp going soft or something else? [drakelist] Drake Equipment
Need to downsize and decided to sell the following equipment and post it on the forum first. All of it is pretty much spotless and I guess if you rated it it would be a 10. All function perfectly and still in the working position. The TR-4 has no scratches or blems and puts out around 150Watts although I never drive it past the .4 mark. TR-4 Ser.#26897 AC-4 PS- totally rebuilt within last year (did not replace transformer) Ser.#55189 RV-4 Ser.#16911 MS-4 Speaker All manuals and a few accessories as I find them (amp. cable) Pretty much a complete station other than my MN2000 which I want to keep. Much prefer to sell all to one person. Due to the condition of all the equipment I'd like to get at least $600. If interested please respond to my email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 73, Jim/k2hn between -00-00 and -99-99
Re: [drakelist] Question on R4A RF Amp
Garey Barrell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Curt - This modification was fairly common even when the receiver was new, since the 12BZ6 has always been a difficult to source tube. It apparently was never a very popular tube, making it hard to find in the 60's and much more expensive than the 6BZ6 today. If there is no 0.005 bypass at the socket, add one. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, B & C-Line and TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs Curt Nixon wrote: Curt Nixon <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Good Morning All: Saw a mention somewhere regarding changing the RF amp tube from a 12BZ6 to a 6BZ6 due to the availability of the 6 volt v. 12volt versions. Re: [drakelist] L4B Plate tuning red pointer
Al, I'm sure lots of people will be interested in those knobs at Hamvention.? Thanks for supporting the Drake enthusiasts. No problem with email delays.? AOL deletes incoming and outgoing email and I'm lucky to get anything, hi hi.? My L4Bs and L7s all behave the same in that the red pointer is always within the thick area on the panel for all respective bands.? I understand the "lack of calibration" you described.? However, I'm not sure you're using the right calibration procedure.? What you should try is getting the plate capacitor plates to full mesh, and then make sure the red pointer is facing the 9 o'clock position.? But to do this, you have to make sure the capacitor doesn't change position as the red pointer is being moved to the correct position. Other than that, I'm not sure what could be causing the same problem in two amplifiers.? Please keep me posted, I'd like to learn from this. 73, Evan -Original Message- From: ALAN PHILLIPS <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Mon, 14 Apr 2008 9:34 pm Subject: [drakelist] L4B Plate tuning red pointer Hi Evan: Sorry I took so long to answer. On both of my amps, per the manual, I loaded up the amp at 21.225? and held the knob and rotated the pointer to 15 meters. than I loaded up at 7.225 and the plate knob pointer on both amps was to the left of the thick 40 meter rectangle, about half way between the 80 and 40 setting. Too bad I can't draw a picture. What do you think? Where is the pointer on your amp? 73's Al kc9ys.
