Good Morning Gang,

Well, Garey (once again!) earns top honours with his expert long distance
trouble-shooting skills...!

I poked around the back of switch S1 in my T-4X, saw that the switch lug
that anchors R63 C132 looked a tad askew relative to the rest of the
lugs...sure enough, with the aid of a small screwdiver, it was quickly made
apparent that that the lug had been broken off of the switch, taking a good
chunk of phenolic with it.

Peering down into the switch shows that another lug is askew as well ---
but it doesn't appear to have any phenolic residue attached to it (NOT a
good thing).

I've epoxied these things successfully in the past with an old Heathkit
SB-400 transmitter that I owned, but man-o-man, this particular switch is
buried REALLY good within the bowels of the T-4X!

Oh well, it will simply HAVE to remedied, no question about that...and if
the epoxy ends up a bust, I'm wondering aloud if there might be any source
of donor switches around --- or is this another one of those rare earth
elements commonly referred to as ...Unobtanium...? Hi Hi.

Thanks to all for having taken the time trouble to come to my aid with
your individual diagnosis --- it's all much appreciated!

 Eddy -

OK. Well if it works in TUNE, then ALL the audio stages are working
fine. In TUNE, the first mic preamp stage is switched to become a phase
shift audio oscillator, and that tone then goes through the transmitter
just as if you whistled into the microphone. That same tone is used for
the sidetone, and to keep the PTT relay closed in CW. So this leaves a
very narrow field for failures, i.e., a couple of switch contacts or the
 mic jack.

So... Either John is correct that your mic is bad, (D-104's are prone
to failing from heat and/or humidity,) the wiring to the mic jack is
wrong, or there is a problem with the switching between mic amp and TUNE
 oscillator.

You can check the mic with a scope, if you have one, if not, a VTVM or
good DMM right at the cartridge terminals should show considerable (a
volt or so) AC output when you whistle into the mic.

  Hi Garey,

Well, I was HOPING that the solution to my lack of audio on SSB / AM
with
the T-4X would have been that easy, but alas, there was no joy in
Muddville
(again) when I tried it here (double sigh!).

I measured the resistances on both V9 V10 afterward, all appears to
be
normal in that regard...next I guess I'll have to measure the actual
  voltages themeselves.

The rig fires up on CW splendidly: it tunes up just as outlined in the
manual, has a nice side tone, mutes the R-4, etc. etc. Yet, when I
switch to
SSB, I CAN trip the internal relay by pressing the PTT button --- but I
get
only a VERY slight indication of plate current (NO output power) in the
mode, and no upward kicks of the meter in any position when tapping the
mic...even with the gain cranked way up.

With the rig set to AM, the plate current DOES swing hard right
momentarily
when the PTT is first keyed, but I suspect that has something to do with
the
controlled carrier set-up in that mode.

Back to the ol' proverbial drawing board for me, I guess...!

These adjustments affect the RECEIVE filter alignment only. NOT the
transmit filter alignment.

The Carrier Oscillator frequency is probably off, which is primarily
dependent upon the 13.695 MHz VCXO. The only safe answer is a complete
realignment, starting with setting the 10V bus adjustment. The
alignment is fully described in the Service Manual, and is not
difficult, but MUST be done correctly and in the proper order to get it
right.

[drakelist] T-4X: No Audio On SSB / AM --- Almost There!

Hi Guys,

Well, rather than trying my luck for a new S1 switch for the T-4X here (fat
chance, no doubt!), I reverted back to ...making-do with what I've got,
i.e.:

-I made a sketch of the wafer, indicated which coloured wire(s) was
soldered to what lug(s);

-Then I snipped off each of the attaching wires right at each lug;

-I confirmed where, exactly, the one loose orphan lug was supposed to
attach to the wafer, and how everything was to align, and finally,

-I applied just a wee bit of slow-cure epoxy glue to the phenolic piece that
broke off, and secured everything nice steady for the 24 hour curing
process with a piece of masking tape.

Once the intial application of glue has hardened, I'll apply LIBERAL amounts
of additional glue, on BOTH sides of the switch as well as to the edges, to
ensure things won't come apart again under stress of rotation.

As I said before, this technique worked very well with the function switch
on my old SB-400, right up to the day I retired the rig.

...And hopefully this'll be the last of this string!

Hi Garey,

Many thanks for the FB note...and my thanks to Don John for their words of
support, too!

Yes, replacing that entire switch would be a real nightmare --- reminds me
of servicing modern-day cars, wherein half of the A/C plumbing has to be
removed first, in order to get access to a sparkplug...!
Hi Hi

Well, all I did here was REMOVE just the (affected) back wafer, applying the
proverbial K.I.S.S. philosophy...and I'm glad I did, because I know that a
repair would have been absolutely impossible without literally having the
wafer ...in hand. There is simply no way that I could have seen where the
orphan lug / contact belonged, never mind installing it properly.

I guess I was lucky that it was only the rear wafer that was bad, NOT the
front one!

Anyway, I'll let the first application of epoxy harden overnight ---
to-morrow I'll apply more to impart strength into it, and may well do so
again after that, too...and then let it all sit undisturbed for about 48
hours, to insure everything is solid well, before re-installing it into
the T-4X.

I'll have an update as to my success (or LACK thereof!) probably near the
end of the week...stay tuned, if interested, Hi Hi...

seemed more aligned to the AC4 upgrade instructions. I did note that in the
instructions there was mentioned a white / orange wire, and in this AC3 it
was simply orange.

My only other two cents worth are:
1) As I ended up doing with the first one, I have a filament transformer
hookup that gives me about a 15:1 reduction from line voltage, makes that
initial snap crackle pop voltage test a little less stressful

2) Even if 1) tests out OK, that doesn't mean at full voltage you might not
encounter some arcing at full voltage if something was in too close
proximity to something else. On the first conversion I did, I had an
alligator clip from the DVM to the HV, and the clip placement was enough to
get some exciting arcing. Also, take care to make sure nothing's sticking
out that might meet the bottom plate.

Again, a most satisfying project, thanks Mike !

[drakelist] Metal Varnish Question

2008-07-06 Thread wmacleod
Hi Drakelist

The alloy chassis used in the Drake C Line series appear to have been dipped
or sprayed with a light yellow-gold protective varnish or lacquer possibly
to protect against corrosion. This is what gives the chassis a light golden
appearance.

Does anyone know of a distributor who supplies a similar type of metal
varnish or lacquer?

[drakelist] Taming the shrew

Well, another problem cropped up today. Earlier this evening I was helping a
local ham air check a new
antenna on HF. Ironically, he seemed to be suffering from RF feedback on 75
meters, so we went to 40. As
soon as I keyed the mic and started talking, the TR7 took off with close to 100
watts of SOMETHING that
looked like a carrier. Subsequent tests on 20 and 10 revealed that his antenna
and my radio were both
working fine on those bands ( he said my audio was EXCELLENT).

Good thing the radio was still sitting in the lab, or I would have really been
annoyed. Testing into the dummy
load revealed that under full power operating conditions, the TR7 was
oscillating at about 9.6 MHz, in ONLY
the 7.0-10.0 MHz bandswitch position. All other bands were rock solid, anywhere
I checked. I looked at all
the obvious things, HP filter, LP filter, grounding, PIN diodes, etc.;
everything seemed to be in order. (BTW,
an MFJ-259 antenna analyzer will drive the TR7 to 200+ watts output when
injected through the HP filter
board). The good news is that the new PA transistors survived this abuse with
flying colors, and the
heatsink was never more than warm to the touch.

I finally backed the predriver gain pot down a little, and that seemed to kill
the oscillation. I didn't go back
and reset power levels, because it was getting late and I wanted to knock off
and ponder this a little bit
more.

Any thoughts from the gurus on how to tame this beast? Even with power reduced,
it makes me a little
nervous that the transmitter stip could be that close to the edge on 40 meters.

Eddy,
Be real sure the contacts line up correctly so when you turn the switch the
contact SMOOTHLY go into position, not hitting the sidea at all (well centered)
