[Drakelist] Noise In R4-C
Hi All, I would like to draw on the wisdom of the group here. My R4-C seems to be developing a sort of frying noise when I am listening. It is really apparent on SSB but also now is getting worse on AM as well. It does not seem to effect audio quality but is running competition at times with the received signal. Does anyone have an idea what this might be? Someone mentioned that there is a particular tube, perhaps a 6EJ7, that gets gassy and can cause this. Any thoughts? Thanks all and very 73. Re: [Drakelist] Noise In R4-C
Best bet, leaking capacitor, or even a small chance it is a cracked resistor. Re: [Drakelist] Noise In R4-C
Kevin - Lee has a couple of good possibilities, but first try swapping V4 with V6 and see if it makes a difference. The 6EJ7 at V4 has a reputation for getting noisy, and you might have to try a couple three 'new' ones to find a quiet one. Once you find one however, it should last for years. A noisy tube is less of a problem at V6 or even at V2. If no luck here, the next most likely suspects are C62 and C63, but you're talking scope and troubleshooting to isolate beyond that. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 2-C/2-NT, 4-A, 4-B, C-Line and TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs www.k4oah.com Kevin Nathan wrote: Hi All, I would like to draw on the wisdom of the group here. Re: [Drakelist] Solder Sucker Reccomendation
The iron-sucker I have apparently is not being sold any more. I looked around the internet a bit and found this: http://www.amazon.com/30-Watt-Electric-Desoldering-Tool/dp/B0002KR9CK/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8s=hiqid=1295130646sr=1-19 I have taken large pin count DIP chips out with a tool similar to this and I could have easily reused the chip. I also have also used it on tube gear. Very good for the price IMO. BUT, it is not for daily use. I really want to someday get something like a Hakko 808. Anyone know where I can get something like that for ~$100? Kevin, Swap the 6EJ7's one at a time to see if it fixes it. 73, Lee -Original Message- From: Kevin Nathan k...@comcast.net To: drakelist drakelist@zerobeat.net Sent: Sat, Jan 15, 2011 1:54 pm Subject: [Drakelist] Noise In R4-C Hi All, I would like to draw on the wisdom of the group here. [Drakelist] ac 10 Power supply
Text for AC 10 Say's 15 amp fuse for the main power. The schematic shows a 1 1/2 amp fuse. I replaced the original fuse with a 1 1/2 fuse and it blew without being connected to anything. IE turned on only. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Mike ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
Re: [Drakelist] Noise In R4-C
Hi Gary, I'm sending this copied to the list as well so Evan and Lee can see the results. I pulled the cover off the R4C tonight and my wife and I exchanged those tubes with each other. Her smaller fingers were invaluable getting V4 back into its spot. GRIN It's been perking for an hour or more now and the noise is gone. Thank you so much for that suggestion. I think I might investigate the solid state replacements that Evan suggested through Sherwood Engineering though but for now the problem seems fixed. Help from all of you is very much appreciated. Take care everyone and very 73.
