[Drakelist] Manuals by Garey - K4OAH
Garey, Awesome job on the manuals which I received week or so ago - some of the best I've ever seen and I've seen more than a few and also written many. Made the job of locating and repairing the calibrator a snap. I LOVE the pictorials that locate the parts and also the cross-reference. The calibrator went right to work after replacing the caps in the cal power supply; diodes and resistors in the assembly were all well within their limits - those old caps sure like to dry out. thanks for the great work! Re: [Drakelist] AC-4
I recently rebuilt my AC4 power supply using the "AC-4R Replacement Power Supply PCB". I completed the rebuild without errors but not without difficulty. I found the references to the under chassis components and terminal pins to be ambiguous requiring a lot of head scratching to get it right. After the rewiring is complete, you are instructed to jumper pins 1 and 2 of the Jones plug before performing the HV and Bias Voltage tests. The Jones plug pinout with the info that the plug is to be viewed from the solder pin side, is inconveniently missing from the copy of the AC-4 Power Supply Schematic, which is provided in the instructions. Otherwise, the circuit board is of high quality as are the other included components. 73 and good luck with it, ~Damon Raphael, W7MD On 02/24/2011 10:16 AM, Windows Live Team wrote: > Looks like it's time to rebuild my AC-4. My experience with the AC4R kit was very positive..excellent quality, fast delivery..etc. So I have followed this thread with some interest. Yes there were some differences between my AC-4 and the instructions. At the risk of sounding elitist, and that is not my intent, if a person can't figure this kit out using just his ac-4, the pile of parts in the kit, and (optional bonus) a schematic of the AC-4, then that person probably should not be working on this 700V supply. Give it to someone else to work on. [Drakelist] Doing Retrofits or Modifications -> Was "AC-4R kit"
Don, I am the engineer who often writes those papers, in a different industry. Your points are very accurate, especially for the "second language is English" market. All, Mike has a great product. I bought the bare board w/o instructions because I had been collecting new parts to build my own before Mike came out with the original bare board offer. I did download, print and STUDY Mike's instructions so that I UNDERSTOOD his retrofit design (seems like the download link was with the board). The reason I did this is because the designer/engineer had to know something about the situation to create the product. Relying heavily on the schematics, I made up my own set of instructions matching to what I had (it seemed like all my wire colors were different). Putting together your own DETAILED instructions based on what you have and what is supplied is MANDATORY for any retrofit or mod. This must be done BEFORE you start any work. This is what you MUST DO for ANY retrofit or mod. Unfortunately most people refuse to do this because they, among other "good" reasons 1) cannot read 2) cannot read a schematic 3) "know" what they're doing 4) don't want to "waste" time on such nonsense. If you want the retrofit/modification to go well, you absolutely must do it. You must also save the data with your equipment documentation for future reference and servicing. Is my process "over the top"? Maybe. Does it take a lot more time and effort? Definitely. Have I ever had a failure? Sure. But you know what? I have always been able to recover because I planned ahead and UNDERSTOOD what was being done. I don't see where Mike's site has the instruction freely available for downloading. I would guess that if you e-mailed Mike explaining that you want to make sure you can do the project before you start, he would provide you a copy to examine. 73, Ron WD8SBB --- On Fri, 2/25/11, Don Cunningham wrote: From: Don Cunningham Subject: Re: [Drakelist] AC-4R kit To: "mike bryce" Cc: drakelist@zerobeat.net Date: Friday, February 25, 2011, 11:49 AM Mike, I too found your instructions to be adequate for me, an old retired school administrator, to rebuild one AC4 very easily. I plan to incorporate the same kit in all my AC4's as I can afford it. I found it to be a high quality board, good components, and with adequate pre-planning (pictures, tracing wiring to be sure it matched your colors and noting differences on the instructions) I had NO glitches at all. I do some blueprint checking and technical writing for a local oilfield manufacturer and find that engineers (and designers) are sometimes too close to the project to see all the ways that something can be communicated. That's why they keep calling me back, to sort out what needs to be included (after customer feedback) in future issuances of materials. I simply make suggestions, as I am NOT the designer of the gear, but we find a middle ground that the customer can understand (often in other parts of the world, not the U.S.). Guys, we have far too few vendors willing to supply us with our needs to keep the old rigs running. Mike at the Heathkit Shop, Tom at Hayseed Hamfest, Jeff at Harbach and many others have ALWAYS been courteous and helpful to me. I DO try to warn new hams of the hazards that are faced in the old gear with higher voltages to consider. I usually do it off list, as I have lost very good friends to stupid accidents that could have been prevented. Many new hams have NOT had our experiences since childhood with this stuff. Thanks again Mike, Tom, Jeff and others for making quality upgrades available for our old gear. 73, Don, WB5HAK ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
