Re: [Drakelist] Drake filter caps, etc.

Paul,

The Hayseed Hamfest is back in production. They carry re-cap kits for the R-4
and 2-C at a reasonable cost. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer of
several kits for the B and C Lines.

I know that Unique Radio Parts closed up shop a couple of years ago, but
they used to sell filter cap boards + caps to replace the can caps in the R-4
series and 2B receivers.

Does anyone have a mask or template of the actual board(s) that I could
use to etch my own one-off PCBs to replace the cans in a 2B and an R-4? I
understand that we're no doubt talking about two different PCBs for the two
receivers.

Also, does anyone know of a source of the blue light-filtering material
for the R-4 series dials?

  TNX in advance.

Re: [Drakelist] T-4XB Dial - White Diffuser Material

Sorry for the delayed response. I did not want to be rude and ignore all of
the good suggestions. I have been busy this week trying to recover a microwave
site that was toasted by lightning.

I will try and find the quilting template material here locally. There are
several craft stores in town, so one of them should have it.

[Drakelist] T-4XB Dial - White Diffuser Material

2010-08-08 Thread Bill Jackson
Greetings to the Group,

I picked up a Drake T-4XB at a local hamfest that has a cracked white dial
diffuser. I still have a couple of the blue filter replacement kits from
WA9TGT, but those kits did not include the white diffuser. I see that KG9BV is
now selling the blue filter replacement kits including the white diffuser, but
email quires to his published address have gone unanswered.

Does anyone have a suggestion on where to obtain some of the white plastic
material that is suitable for this application?

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Drakelist] R4-B Cap value?

2010-07-16 Thread Bill Jackson
Kirk,

It is listed on K4OAH's service CD as an 8 uF, 150V. The replacment in the
capacitor kit from Hayseed Hamfest is 10 uF 200V.

This is the same capacitor that blew in my R-4B that prompted me to purchase
the kit.

[Drakelist] R-4B Recap

2010-07-08 Thread Bill Jackson
Greetings,

I am a relative newcomer to boatanchor restoration. So far, the Drakes I have
purchased have only required some basic switch cleaning and detailing to
bring them back to their original glory.

I now have an R-4B that requires the installation of a recap kit from the
Hayseed Hamfest. I am looking for some advice from the group on the techniques
they have used to replace the 4 section can capacitor with the minimal amount
of disturbance to the wiring in the radio.

I see that 2 of the 4 mounting tabs are soldered to chassis, one of them is
tucked under the audio output transformer. I also see that there is a fair
amount of wiring that runs by this can. What should I do to make sure I don't
booger up the adjacent wiring when unsoldering the can from the chassis? I
assume you clip and re-strip the leads you remove from the tabs on the can,
rather than trying to unsolder them? Should I unsolder and remove the audio
output transformer?

Also, are there any good web resources available that can educate me in some of
the better techniques in component replacement used by the experts in
boatanchor restoration?

Thanks!

Re: [Drakelist] R-4C Audio Problem - RESOLVED!

2010-02-08 Thread Bill Jackson
Thanks to Garey and his documentation CD, my birdie problem is resolved! I was
able to determine that somewhere in one of my receiver's previous lives a
capacitor was added across R83 on the audio board. This provided a feedback
loop which caused the audio board to oscillate at approximately 330 KHz. This
waveform was clearly visible on the audio output transistor using a scope. It
was also backfeeding on the +14 volt buss to the crystal calibrator board which
modulated the crystal calibrator output, causing the birdies in the passband of
the receiver. Adjusting the volume control changed the frequency of the
fundamental oscillation in the audio amp just enough to change the frequencies
of the birdies in the passband.

My receiver is now working fine and will be taking its place on my operating
table shortly. Without Garey's documentation CD in hand, it would have been a
long and tedious search for that capacitor.

Thanks again to all!

Re: [Drakelist] R-4C Audio Problem

2010-02-07 Thread Bill Jackson
Many thanks to all who responded. I swapped out the calibrator board with a
known good one from my other R-4C and it made no difference. The birdies
really appear to be related to the audio amplifier section. I tried the
suggestion of putting a 100 ohm resistor in series with the headphones which
reduced the audio level, but the birdies are still present. They are also
audible on an MS-4 external speaker.

As I said in my original note, they are definitely appearing in the passband of
the receiver, as they can be peaked with the preselector but change in
frequency with the position of the volume control. I suspect something is
flying somewhere in the power supply or audio amplifier section that is
tunable with the volume control.

I will try to borrow a scope and obtain some capacitors to start my search for
the offender.

Thanks again.

Subject: [Drakelist] R-4C Audio Problem

I have an interesting problem to present to the group.

I'm in the process of restoring a later model R-4C that has a peculiar audio
problem. The receiver is working fine with excellent sensitivity on all
bands,
except that on 80m when I turn on the crystal calibrator, I hear what appear
to
be weak, but very raspy spurious birdies in between the 25 KHz markers. When
I
vary the volume control, the birdies sweep through the passband of the
receiver. Also, when listening to the audio output with a pair of headphones
when the receiver is muted, I hear the usual low level hum that is typical
for
the R-4C, but it changes characteristics over a relatively small range around
the 9 o'clock position of the volume control. The hum does not change in
volume, it just sounds rather raspy over this small range, similar in
characteristic to the birdies I hear in between the 25 KHz markers. Is it
possible the audio output stage is self oscillating at some odd frequency and
is somehow mixing with or modulating the output of the crystal calibrator?

I don't have access to a scope, but I do have access to a good quality Fluke
DVM and an IFR service monitor. I would appreciate any suggestions on where
to
start looking. This particular receiver was in storage for about 15 years,
so
I wouldn't be surprised if there are some electrolytic capacitor issues.

 Thanks in advance.

Greetings,

I am working on an R-4C with a strange audio problem.

When I rotate the volume control between the 9 and 11 o'clock positions, I
hear a faint birdie oscillation at a couple of different spots on the 10m
band. The frequency of the oscillation will change with the position of the
volume control. Also, when I use a pair of headphones, I hear a distinct
change in the quality of the audio in the same range of the volume control
that produces the birdies.

Any suggestions on what to look for?

Thanks
