[Drakelist] TR-3/TR-4 owners in Boston area?
Hi there, I'm considering outfitting my TR-3 with new finals, but would need some guidance and elmer/equipment support in doing the neutralizing of finals and such. So just wondering if there might be some enthusiasts in this area that might be up for helping out with such a thing. I'd offer a six-pack of beer or other food oriented gratitude for such help. The element DOES give output, and may just have been my prejudice based on the appearance of the element (some rust). Also appeared to have a lower output based on my multimeter, compared to my D104, but it does put out. I suppose if they stocked those original 630 elements, that would be something, though! Otherwise the element appears the same, maybe slightly less deep than the 444. Point of trivia, the ElectroVoice repair service is now located in the former HyGain Electronics plant in Lincoln (now Bosch/Telex) where I work, and they do still service some of the old microphones. Chuck Wyatt [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Ken Sands suggested double-checking that EV element, which I did and it appears good. Seems to drive the TR-3 just great! Thanks to all for the measurements on the 444/444D and clarification -- I may need to go that route. Now that I've rewired the EV-630 switch to work with PTT, I'm getting a hum through the speaker when I touch the mic body only when the mic is not keyed. Problem seems to be that the on/off switch is SPST, one of the element leads is grounded. If I contact the TR-3 ground to either element lead it will key the rig. RE: [drakelist] TR4C repair
Hi Terry, Welcome back to the hobby. I have had my own long periods of inactivity, so I definitely know how that happens. Life gets in the way of this stuff. I know what you mean about the CQ thing. Sometimes I've been a bit disappointed about the whole friendly factor. Some groups on the air seem more like cliques, and I've felt a strong sense that they were pretty exclusive. Then, as much as I like chasing DX, it isn't infrequent that a pile up degenerates into name calling or just general rudeness and poor operating procedures. Anyway, having said that, I still call CQ from time to time. I listen for it as well, but probably don't hear it as much as when I started the hobby back as a 13 year-old in 1977. Having said that, I see lots of CQing on PSK31 one of the new low power digital modes. Less on SSB, but I still do that anyway. I almost never hear CQ on 75 meters, but I think that has always been pretty uncommon. I love the Drake gear, I've always thought the older Drakes just looked great. I know now that they are made really well, and the tube SSB audio has a nice quality to it. Maybe there is a group of friendly folks on the reflector that gathers via roundtable -- seems like it would be a great real-time way to talk about equipment issues or just rag chew. Hey, I'm up for it. 73, Chuck W1CEW (KB5GC: 1978-2005, WD5FWX: 1977-1978) www.chuckwyatt.com _ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Terrell E. My dream rig was always a Drake setup. To this end, I bought a TR4C from an estate sale, an antenna tuner, and a G5RV antenna. The receiver works excellently. Although I have instructions, I cannot get the transmitter to utter even a peep. Since I have forgotten whatever electronics I ever knew, I would like to get some quick and dirty suggestions for a repair plan. The only test equipment I have is a fairly decent VOM, and hope that will be all I need. Checking the tubes would be a good first step, I suppose, and perhaps whatever TR relay is there. Checking the power from the PS is my next thought. Anything else before I ship it off to a repair facility? Also, I have noticed a few operating differences on the air - I hear almost NO CQ's - Two, I think, in a couple of months of listening. Maybe it's just happenstance. On sending my own CQ's on an old Henry Radio Tempo One, I have not had a single reply, even after endless calling on all bands. Is the CQ a thing of the past? I am confused by what seems to me to be a large number of nets as well - I hear them spending long periods of time asking for sign-ins. Do they do that for a certain period, and then have folks take turns on a ragchew, or pass traffic? Maybe they have taken the place of CQ calls. 73 - Terry (Out-of-Date) Hamilton K7WLD [EMAIL PROTECTED] attachment: image001.jpg

Is this white relay this relay part number: R10-E1Y4-V2.5K ? I'm not certain that this is the actual T/R relay or whether this part refers to another relay in the unit. I did find the reference to Mouser or Digikey as a supplier on www.wb4hfn.com, however. The other problem I'm tracking down may be fixed by replacing this same relay, which is that when I go into TX tune, some times I get carrier out, but most of the time not, or VERY low level power out, but meanwhile SSB output is unaffected. This is a sure-fire way to get into a lot of trouble. Consider the possibility that one or _TWO_ of the new tubes are either defective or sub-par in some way. Right away you have _TWO_ entirely different problems to troubleshoot. There's nothing wrong with having a set of tubes on hand however. Then if you have a problem, you can replace the most likely tube and see if there is any change. If you still have the problem, replace the original tube and try the next most likely. If you still have the problem, you then know that it's NOT a tube, and can proceed to troubleshoot until you find the real problem. When you have a working unit, check your spare tubes, again, one at a time, to verify that they work as expected. In this case don't worry about minor changes that might be corrected by alignment, etc., but just verify that the unit still works with the spare tube in place. Then store those tubes away and you have a definitive trouble-shooting tool. The carrier shift relay Drake used became unavailable near the end of production of the TR-4s. They made a small PC board that would accept another PC mount relay and had terminals to allow replacement of the original relay. 73, Garey - K4OAH Atlanta Drake C-Line Service Manual http://hr99.home.mindspring.com/R-4C_Servicez/ Chuck Wyatt wrote: Thanks Garey, I'm definitely going to try this, especially as Gary (Poland) indicates the original replacement relay is pretty difficult to find. Though I suppose I could substitute something from R/S perhaps with a 12 VDC coil. I'm supposing that this relay has nothing to do with carrier behavior (no carrier about 80% of the time when I throw the tune switch). As when I tap it down, the frequency on SSB receive shifts back to normal, but it doesn't seem to impact the tuning issue. Since I bought it only about a month ago, it probably makes sense to buy a whole new set of tubes for the thing just to discount gassey tubes as having an impact. -Chuck -- On Behalf of Chuck Wyatt [EMAIL PROTECTED] Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: http://www.zerobeat.net Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --

Since it worked with HIS power supply (we think?) I would first suspect the +250V electrolytics in your supply. The caps in the bias supply could also be questioned since it is used extensively in the AGC circuitry. It's easiest to just shunt the existing caps with whatever caps you have that are at least as much capacity and at least as high a voltage as the existing caps, leaving the existing ones in place. When you find the one(s) that fix the problem, remove the old one and replace with an appropriate sub. Never leave an old capacitor in circuit as a permanent repair. There is also an electrolytic inside the TR-4, C135 I think, that might be down, but since it allegedly worked with another supply, I'd start there. Title: Message Hi all, I just bought a TR-4C, woo hoo! Sure will need a power supply though. Didn't come with a mic either, but I've got a lead on one of those hard-to-find plugs for my D104. I wonder if folks have speech processors that the recommend, or maybe none at all? thanks much, Chuck Wyatt KB5GC ~~~Chuck Wyatt Web Technical Services Manager Clark University Tel: +1-(508)-793-7535
