Date sent: Wed, 31 Aug 2005 10:26:54 -0400

Dear ARRL/Ham Subscriber:

We are currently working to coordinate a Katrina
Ham Traffic net for the handling of RADIOGRAM
messages via ham radio and the Internet into
and out of the affected area.

This initiative is in the EVALUATION PROCESS only and
is currently under consideration at ARRL.

The project needs of the following:

1. Hams who are in the affected area(s) or who can travel to the
affected areas with HF rigs and power.

2. Hams at there home QTH who can monitor selected HF traffic
frequencies, copy radiograms coming out of the area and relay them
via
the Internet to The Emergency Email Wireless Network for further
relay.

If you would be able to participate in this effort you can email us
at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Please share this information with those you
think may be of benefit.

Sincerely,

J. William

Yeah Steve,

Lately I've been hearin' that if you put all yer Drake goodies up on
one of them-thar, fancy, new-fangled auction sites the bidness
profits ya net will send ya into early retirement (ONLY KIDDING -
just pokin' sticks at the animals)!!! ;-)

Here is a web resource, compiled by Ron - WB4HFN (a Drake
*Collector*) that provides SOME Drake-specific resale value HISTORY:

http://www.wb4hfn.com/DrakePricing.htm

Perhaps that will give you some ideas / guidelines. But, why not
unload all your newer gear, and keep your Dad's American-Made
Classics (or keep both)?

Hi Steve, It's all junk. I'll be happy to take it off your hands, if
you pay the shipping. All kidding aside, Its good stuff. Well worth
the effort to get on the air. Good luck, George, KB2Z

 - Hello Drake Owners,

This is my first time to use this so please go easy on me.

My father passed away in 2002 and I now have some Drake equipment
that I know little to nothing about. There are some 20 odd pieces of
gear, so I thought someone might help me out.

 1. L75 amp with owners manual and shipping box. Looks new
 2. T4XB
 3. R4B
 4. MS4 x 3
 5. DC4
 6. AC4 x 2
 7. 2NT
 8. R2A
 9. R4C
 10. CS7
 11. Box of misc. parts... mics, spare tubes, 90 degree mic plugs,
manuals, etc. Too many things to list.

Is there any value to this stuff or is it all just junk?

 Thanks for any help,

[drakelist] [drake list] collectors

2005-07-24 Thread Don - W7DAH

Don - W7DAH [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterance to the drakelist gang

In my humble opinion eBay is a good thing. Slicker-n-snot good for
the hobby, and for Drake collecting. My eBay ID is my call sign.

Compare eBay to the typical Hamfest flea-market experience:

We ALL know that the good-old-boy-CLIQUE of Hamfest-aficionados
arrive at the HamFest at 6AM (or earlier), before it officially
opens, and attend the pre-fest breakfast gathering, at some local
choke-and-puke, at Oh-Dark-30, and each knows every other license
holder for a 1,000 miles+ radius.

Those folks naturally have a leg-up on ANY and EVERYONE else (who
have lives) who might like to enter the Drake world by buying a nice
set of C-Line twins, etc. (like the NEWBIES and youngsters that those
same folks CLAIM hamfests are doing such a favor for, even)! These
might include some OM who has some Ham-widow's Drake gear to peddle,
and one foot already in the grave themselves, and averse to eBay coz
they're techno-phobic where 'puters and the 'net are concerned (not
that there is anything wrong with any of that, of course (for the
record, I'm 53) ;-)

We also ALL know that THOSE Hamfest INSIDERS will get the first look
at what is available at those 'fests, and very likely be able to
snare the best offerings, off the tailgate of some pick-up truck,
before the gates ever open to the 'fest, and before the rest of us
great-unwashed-masses even gets a look at what might have been
available otherwise (the early bird gets the worm, and the rest of us
worms get the bird, so-to-speak).

eBay levels the playing field.

So, I suspect that much of the complaining about eBay, that I read,
comes from those who have lost a bit of that Hamfest-EDGE, and are
forced to swim in a larger pond, or sit on the swapping sidelines
since the advent of eBay and it's broadening of the audience for the
hobby and Drake collecting. Thus driving supply, demand, and prices.

Those same folks might like the rest of us to believe that their
concerns over eBay, and the higher prices dictated by supply and
demand dynamics, are all rooted in their personal concern for the
hobby, and their personal sense of altruism. Hehe, now there's an
auction where I WON'T be buyin' what's up forsale.

As for the greed and larceny ... that exists everywhere (even in
Canada, and even at Hamfests). eBay has no corner on that market.

The reason I am tossing out my 2-cents+ worth is that I take mild
exception to those who rather than accept that there are multiple
differences of perspective on this topic, prefer to question the
intelligence and / or morals of those who differ with their own. That
part is the hooey that has prompted my comments on THIS topic.

I have a total of 28 eBay transactions dating back to 2001.

The majority of those eBay transactions were PURCHASES of Drake
pieces. (I bought 2ea. R-4Cs, 2ea. T-4XCs, 2ea. MN-2000s, 2ea. W-4s,
1ea, MN-4, 1ea, 1ea. MN-4C, etc). My assumption, going-in, was that I
might ultimately have to buy two of any 30+ y/o gear that I would
want to build into ONE decent keeper with a few spare parts.

One of those eBay purchases was from Ron - WB4HFN:
http://www.wb4hfn.com/DrakeHomePage.htm , one of the most helpful
savvy Drake collectors out there. So, not every Drake seller on eBay
is a Pirate either.

The short of it is, if eBay sucks as bad as some say, it simply could
not have been as outrageously successful as it has enjoyed to-date.

My 25-cents worth.
