[Drakelist] REAR CABINET RUBBER BUMPER FEET

2011-08-26 Thread FRANK MILLER
Is there a source, or substitute resembling original, that will suffice as the
bumper feet on
the bottom back side of the Drake cabinets. These come into play when the back
risers
are removed to give more of a slant position to the cabinets. Thank you.

[Drakelist] SLIPPING RF TUNE CONTROL

2011-06-08 Thread FRANK MILLER
Does anyone have any insights as to how to correct an RF tune control problem
on my T4X.
It will not tune 160 and 10 meters because at the extreme ends the control
slips. The center
section tunes fine. I suspect the grease has turned hard. Any ideas or methods
of repair?
Thanks.

Re: [Drakelist] Drake tr7 low cw output

2009-10-20 Thread Frank Vallance

After completing an alignment of my tr7,I still have the same problem, namely
only 2 watts o/p on cw. On ssb I get 100 watts o/p. Alc light is not lit. Test
band was 80 mtrs. Can anybody suggest why this is so. Further, when dummy load
is disconnected, alc light comes on at 20 watts o/p. (ssb) On cw, alc light
comes on at 2 watts o/p. Test band was 80 mtrs. I do have the sevice handbook.

[Drakelist] Drake Tr7 with cw problem

2009-10-12 Thread Frank Vallance

Hi folks, My Drake Tr7, s/n 3669, has the following problem: On ssb, 80 mtrs,
it puts out only 90 watts, alc light is not lit. nor for that matter on any
other band. On cw, it puts out only 2 watts. When load is disconnected, alc
comes on at 20 watts op. (ssb). On cw, alc light comes on at 2 watts o/p. Can
anybody help. Further, is there a modern type replacement for CR1102, 5082 -
3379 which is located on the 2nd IF/ Audio board.

Many thanks

Frank,

I think that this is really in topic. Antenna restrictions in new and old
communities are beginning to determine how we all can get on the air. It
used to be that you could move out of the restrictions with no problems,
but,
at least where I live, it is not possible. The banks require the builders
to
have an HOA to get their loans from the banks, and the banks all want them
to
have an HOA in the new development to protect their loans. The builders go
to
the state website, which has an HOA agreement that prohibits antennas
because
they do not want anything to "decrease the value of the homes in the
development."

What this means is, you can not finance any home without the covenants
because the
loan officers believe that it is a big risk if the home is not in an area
that
has an HOA.

Therefore, we all need to understand that unless we are lucky enough to have
located into an area that did not yet require these restrictions, and intend
to stay there for the rest of our lives, we will probably have a problem
with
the restrictions in our future.

I like to have an antenna on the end of my Drake, and my Icom, and all the
rest of my radios that glow in the dark as well as my rice boxes.

Jack

[drakelist] TR7 VCO Faults

2007-03-29 Thread Frank Woolfe
Ok Fella's

To save time wasting emails,

I have no bias control on the junctions of CR517,518/pin 13 of the UA739 Op
Amp.I can't see the voltage swing as specified (fig 2-12 TR7 Service Manual)
to control either the Hi or Low VCO's on the coarse tune line .

The Hi and Low VCO's are functional and operate when the bandswitch is
changed ie low VCO 0-15MHz, Hi VCO 15-30MHz, however, the Hi VCO is
oscillating around 82MHz, a little high..

Is the op-amp output bias (pin 13) eventually controlled by the PLL chip?
or the VCO bias line? or is that line purely for monitoring? Or is there
something else I'm missing???

The VCO bias line (pin 19 on the VCO board) is showing no voltage swing
when the band switch is changed.

Or do I try and buy another VCO board??

Basically from what I can figure, if the OP Amp voltage doesn't swing when
the appropriate VCO is selected it will not supply the correct mixing freq
to the translator and up-converter boards causing RX failure,

The IF section is fine and PBT no problems from the 2nd mixer down have
injected 48.05MHz into the input of the 2nd mixer to prove operation.

40MHz & PTO injection is OK into the Translator, VCO injection (48-78MHz) is
obviously incorrect due to the main VCO fault.

I can see why it's such a good radio when you get down to this level, they
were very clever to design a radio of this complexity in that period with a
48MHz 1st IF, but it's a pig to fault find, any idea's??

Cheers

Frank..

I was using a PS75 for my TR7 I now use a COSEL, PAA600F-15 to power my
complete station incl TR7, various 2m gear and an ICOM IC720A, you'll pay
for a COSEL but their MIL SPEC and dead quiet, I also have a small 14Ahr gel
cell floated across it.

Hi all,

I'm interested in hearing the pro's and con's regarding using a switching
power supply with a TR-7(a). I remember this question coming up on the
Sunday PM technical net some time ago, but forgot the details.

As I recall, it is not recommended, but don't remember why.

[drakelist] TR7 Faults

2007-02-05 Thread Frank Woolfe
Group, two questions,

1, My TR7 developed a fault. First it lost all receive, upon inspection it
turned out to be the 10V RX rail switching transistor, since that fault the
AUX7 board has also developed a fault, it appears to work without the DR7
installed band set light comes on etc and appears to be doing all the normal
things. When the DR7 is reinstalled the AUX7 does not function at all ie; no
set band light and the radio functions as normal, any clues??

2, Where's the best place to obtain 2SC2879's for the TR7 Amp Mod as per the
WB4HFN site?

[drakelist] RE: audio waveform has warble/hum on it!

2006-12-11 Thread frank
OK, my TR-7 is getting back in line to what it left Ohio many years ago.
I have been listening pretty critically on the receive and it seemed on SSB
like there was a slight warble on the audio. When going to CW it was harder to
hear but still there. (I listen to 35+WPM so maybe I couldn't hear it.)
Went to the Calibrator and it seems like the 25kHz calibrator signal is
"jumping" up and down (in voltage) slightly, maybe +/- 3% or so on the scope.
Audio-wise it is hard to hear but.. it is there - warbling ever so slightly.
There is also some sort of "other signal" in the background. The other signal
is much lower in frequency, maybe 60Hz? but the same amplitude!
The scope seemed like it had problems syncing... Any thoughts on this? Frank

[drakelist] Re: Oscillator alignment 40Mhz and 53.695Mhz

2006-12-09 Thread frank
Morning all,
Deep into my new (to me) TR-7, I am attempting to align this unit.
I have a very accurate counter / analyzer (Aeroflex-IFR), and am attempting to
align the 40Mhz and the 53.695Mhz oscillators.
After setting the 10.00 Volts, I moved on to the 40Mhz and 53.695Mhz
oscillators.
When I attempt to align the 40Mhz, and approach 40Mhz with L1001, all seems
well so I believe the coil is good but I lose lock as I approach 40Mhz.
Closest I can get is 1.07kHz low. I do get about 1.9kHz swing in the
adjustment of the slug.
Second...when attempting to adjust the 53.695, I get close but cannot seem to
get there. I am low 2.441kHz, as the closest I can get.

While I believe the crystals are both off, is there any hints and kinks (adding
caps, etc?) to get this back in alignment?

Thoughts?

Warm Regards, Frank, KG9H

Sorry if this is a repost, but I want to interface my "amplified" D-104 with
a TR7. I have seen reports in the past of doing this both "as-is" and in
addition, using the QST modification to truly limit the upper end of the
D-104 to 4kHz or so.

What do the purists say?

Re: [drakelist] PS for TR-3

2006-11-27 Thread Frank Woolfe
I purchased my R4C & T4XC off this guy, when it arrived;

1, the R4C didnt work,
2, case was also badly dented,
3, was supposed to be "Loaded"
3, upon inspection I found it had been dropped that hard that the power
transformer was on that much of an angle (about 25 Deg's) that it jarred the
3rd mixer (6EJ7) out of place and could not be re-inserted into it's socket
without first straightening the Transformer, No extra filters, this was a "Mint
collecters condition from my own personal collection" description.

Just as well I live in Australia otherwise I would've knocked on this Guy's
front door with a crowbar, no effort was made for refund due to damage only neg
feed back to me.

The thing I just cant fathom is really there isnt that much good DRAKE equip on
epay, so where does he get it from??

He has another L75 (S/n344) this one's rare and unused!!! also L4B (S/n 6122)
mint and unused, as well as a myriad or other "mint, near new, collectors
condition, close to new, from estate, new tubes, rare find, best i've ever
seen, close to mint, from my personal collection", listed this week, it
would be interesting to log S/n's and see how many appear again I'm sure there
would be one or two.

I'm getting a little tired of that red velvet background myself but on
the other hand, it makes it easier to ignore those listings. Check out ebay
item 250050808246. This is an R-4B in supposedly "collector's condition".
However, the small knobs are not original, there is paint missing on the
cabinet, and evidence of corrosion near the extra crystal sockets in the back.
But the piece de resistance is the missing fuse cover. I wonder if this thing
works at all? Let the buyer beware. The fool who wins this auction deserves

[drakelist] (drakelist) Bills PS7 Saga

2006-10-30 Thread Frank Woolfe

Gday Bill, from Down Under,

Lets have a look at a few voltages first shall we,

What's the voltage at the base of the TIP31 that drives that pass Tran's,
it should be similar to the desired output???

When you adjust the YELLOW pot on the voltage reg board is there any
variance of voltage swing at the base of the TIP31?? , you may have to
remove this device if it is hosed to see voltage swing.

Having done that, no swing 1723 reg stuffed maybe, but I dont think
so..

Have you checked with a meter the pass transistors? i.e. diode check,
you should be able to do this in circuit see if their OK

WHY DIDN'T YOU HAVE THE THING FUSED YOU KNUCKLE HEAD!!!

The 2N5301's are a just a basic 10amp power transistor so if their
hosed don't worry too much a replacement is not all that expensive a 2N2955 will
suffice. and this lesson will teach you to have protection in place!!!

That 100R resistor that you replaced is part of an over
voltage CROWBAR circuit, it's there to protect your radios should the reg
circuit fail, not necessary but good insurance just about any SCR of reasonable
amperage will do here as you can see by the circuit it's driven by a zenor, when
voltage goes high volts are applied to the SCR and BANG should go something
a fuse would be good, there really should be a fuse between this and the pass
transistors.

I would say that more than likely you have hosed the pass and the driver
stage

See how you go with that,

Gents,

My tr4 has stopped working when switched on this
morning, last time I used it which was last monday night it worked faultlessly

All voltages have been checked from the AC4 and appear
OK at the Jones connector.

The S meter doesnt do it's usual swing to the negative
then to the positive when powered up.

When swithed to Cal a very weak signal is heard in the
loudspeaker.

No TX drive at all but the preselector does appear to be
working on recieve albeit very weak

PTT function operates but no audio drive.

Any ideas where to start looking

Many thanks for all your supportive and informative

US I have spoken to the vendor and he will include the freight component
from UK to Oz in the price, so it works like this $625GBP =$1518AUD=$1108USD
after going through all your mails it's not a bad deal when you have freight
included, works out to be around $250 AUD, I have found good TR7's hard to
source over here, well there's none over here and from the US, I also
understand that the PS75 is a little bit of a light weight, I will be running
the radio off my 43amp Cossel switch mode I use that for my old rice burner

Best 73's to you all

Frank: VK5MFW..
This appears to be a nice setup.  Here
in the States a  nice basic TR7 sells for US$400.  When you add what
comes with this, you're over US$1,000 easy (filters $50/ea, noise blanker $150,
mic $75, service manual $40, PS75 $125, extender boards $50, RV7 $125).  If
you're serious about a TR7 there isn't much that comes with this rig that you
wouldn't eventually want (though I'd trade the PS75 for a PS7; the PS75 is rarer
and somewhat of a collectable, where the PS7 is a much better power
supply).73Lee WB6SSW

[drakelist] lazy S-meter on R4B

2006-02-13 Thread Jeff Frank

Hello. I'm new to this reflector. I recently
purchased a Drake R4B that was refurbished less than six months
ago.
When I first turn the receiver on, the S-meter
reads low and then takes a good five minutes to go from S2 up to S5. I
switched V4, V5, V9 with each other, in every posible configuration, and it
doesn't help. This also happens on the AM function. I also
replaced V1 to no avail. One guy told me this is normal for an R4B, to
take some time for the S-meter to stabilize. Is anyone out there familiar
with this issue? Thanks.

[drakelist] TR7: Which revision is latest one for the Service Manual?

2005-07-17 Thread Frank Goenninger - PRION Consulting

Hi all Drake-ists:

I have bought a used TR7 with high serial number (> 1). Now, I
need a Service Manual...

Q1: Are there multiple revisions available (I couldn't find any
mentioning of revs on the WWW).

Q2: Which one (if any) corresponds to my TR7 with my serial nr?

Any ideas and hints really appreciated.

Mni tnx es vy 73 de
