Re: [Drakelist] Tune TR4C
Make sure you have your sideband switch also in the 'X' position. Re: [Drakelist] thoughts
I have been using a homebrew tuning 'pecker' for years without ruining the finals in my Drake's or my SB200 amp. They allow tuning the finals without stressing them. The only requirement is that you use a peak reading wattmeter. Here is a link if you are interested. http://www.3898pecker.com/ 73' Jerry K4FJK -Original Message- From: ron Sent: Friday, August 05, 2011 11:20 AM To: drakelist@zerobeat.net Subject: [Drakelist] thoughts Gang, I been enjoying the Drake TR4C for a spell, then let it rest awhile while using my current solid state radios. I decided to return to Drakes and whoa! I forget how to tune these babies. I had to re-learn (has something to do with my grey hair I suppose). I was wondering if you guys get nervous too during the tuning process so as not to ruin the finals. It just scares me sometimes 72 Ron, wb1hga ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
Re: [Drakelist] R-4A PTO: It wasn't the transistors (entirely)
Steve, for what it's worth I had a very similar problem with the PTO in my R4B sometime ago. I reheated all of the connections on the PTO circuit board and it cured my problem. 73' Jerry K4FJK - Original Message - From: Steve Wedge To: drakelist@zerobeat.net Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2011 9:07 PM Subject: [Drakelist] R-4A PTO: It wasn't the transistors (entirely) Replaced both transistors - the osc with the correct 2N706A and the buffer with a 2N3904 (the '3858's are no longer made and the ones left are stupid-expensive). Unfortunately, it's still jumping around like a five-year-old on a sugar-buzz. Scratch the transistors as the culprits - though the signal quality does sound a little better. Looking at the worm drive/yoke, I'm wondering: how much slop is acceptablebetween the worm drive and the yoke? Mine seems to have a significant amount. I'm also tending back toward capacitors again. that largish brown one: is there anything special about it? I've heard at least a couple of reports of that being the culprit. 73, Steve Wedge, W1ES/4 I can't complain, but sometimes I still do. - Joe Walsh If the above message appears, it came from Steve's Son of Laptop! -- ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
[Drakelist] TR4CW AGC
I am restoring a TR4CW and have it working except for the AGC. I have swapped out all of the tubes but I still don't have any AGC action. While the S-meter does indicate signal strength there is no delay in the movement. I have measured the voltage and resistance on the 12AX7 AGC tube with the following results: PINVDC 1-.1 2-51 3-49 4 0 5 0 6+1.17 (should be -0.16) 7-51 8-49 96.3 (fil) Pin 6 which is the plate of the 12AX7 measured 1.2M to ground but should be 2.2M according to the manual that I downloaded from the internet. My schematic copy is not too clear given it's all on one page in the download. It appears that pin 6 goes through 3 resistors in route to a -60V source but I can't find that source on my schematic. Can someone telll me where to find the source of the -60V feeding pin 6 of the 12AX7? [Drakelist] TR4-CW
I am restoring a TR4-CW and have it working somewhat. I have found a yellow/white wire that is not connected to anything in the vinicity of the relative power slide switch and comes out of the harness near the slide switch. It measures 136 VDC to ground. Does anybody have an idea as to where this wire should be going? Also, it does not appear that the receiver is fully functional as the RF gain control has no effect. I have not yet checked all the tubes so that might be part of the problem. Thanks, Jerry K4FJK___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
[Drakelist] Smoke Damage
Thanks to all of you who offered excellent suggestions on how to deal with these smoke/soot damaged radios. You have all given me some great ideas. Hopefully I will be able to get these old Drakes up and running again. 73’ Jerry K4FJK___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist
[Drakelist] Smoke damaged TR-4CW
I have a TR-4CW that was given to me that was in a fire about a year ago. I can see no damage to the plastic dials or knobs, meters, etc. so I think it was not close to flames. The top of the chassis is covered with heavy soot. The front panel and underneath the chassis look very good. My question to the group is what is the best way to clean it up. I have given thought to taking it outside on a hot sunny day and spraying Simple Green on the chassis and scrubbing it with a fairly stiff bristle brush. All comments are welcome.
