[Drakelist] RF Tube Testing
I am looking for some guidnace on testing RF amplifier tubes. I have a couple of 3-500Z tubes that I would like to determine if they are keepers or should be sent on to the Great Junk Pile In The Sky. Re: [Drakelist] Ten-Tec and Drake Compared
I can say I have had both. Each has its distinct advantages. I enjoyed my B Line. Sadly I let it go about a year ago. The R-4B was and is a great receiver. Had a TR7. Receiver was a little hash for my ears. Overall a good rig (an equal performer to my Kenwood TS-830S).. I now own an Ten-Tec Omni VII. Do I think it's better than the Drakes? Receiver seems to win out, over all of the above (I have the extra filters installed). Good reports on transmit audio. Sometimes, the menus are a bit cumbersome but easily learned. Service, well only one experience and it was not with the radio. They seemed no worse nor better than anyone else, as of late and that includes non-amateur equipment (try dealing with huge IT companies, and it is not just Microsoft, they really put the spin on poor customer service). What would I do again, keep the B Line just for casual ragchewing. The Omni for digging folks out of noise and QRM and running digital modes. The Kenwood will remain the backup rig until it turns to dust. 73 W5BXE___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

I would rather sell all of it as a single lot. Please don't inquire about specific items. The radio was serviced this past August, by WB4HFN, and given a clean bill of health. This is a working radio and it can be heard, conditions permitting, on 3.868 (Drake Trader Net) this Tuesday. I haven't decided on a price but I'm negotiable. If you're interested, please correspond with me off the list. Digital pic's are available, if you desire. Lastly, I prefer not to ship the radio but if you insist and are willing to pay the charges, I can do that. If you're wondering why am I selling, it is because I'm going to purchase another radio. I've tested using another trusted device, a MN-2000, which shows correct readings for SWR and output power. Consequently, I'm thinking there may be a defective component or two on the watt meter board. I don't have a manual so I'm depending on WB4HFN's web site for a schematic. In there is a comment that if you find a defective diode, you must replace it with the same type. All contacts look normal with no signs of arcing or otherwise pitted metal. Thoughts, suggestions? Please no flaming for the use of bandwidth as I really believe that if this is true it would be worth taking a stand against ** **Here is something that all hams should be interested in! Who knows what and who will be next!** ted California County Taking Actions To Silence ALL Ham Activity From http://www.radiobanter.com/ San Luis Obispo county supervisors took drastic and unprecedented action yesterday by passing an ordinance that would prohibit amateur radio operators, known as hams, from operating their transmitting stations. The measure was put in place to eliminate what officials said were health risks associated with transmitters located close to children. A legal struggle is expected. By a vote of 4 to 1 with one abstention, the governing board of SLO county took action aimed at addressing a recent Stanford University study that showed a correlation between ham radios and attention de ficit disorder and hyperactivity in children, as well as nagging reports of interference caused by radio hams operating their high-powered transmitters in residential neighborhoods. Our primary responsibility is to provide a safe environment for children to live without the dangerous effects of radio waves constantly bombarding them and causing proven neurological and psychological problems, said E. Duane Nyborg, an attorney who represented the county in several court cases in the past year. Hams are not the only culprits, but they are usually in very close proximity to children and are no doubt a major contributor to the health problems we've been seeing. The interference is just the last straw that convinced the county that something had to be done about it. Atascadero city manager Laura Lopez said that she has seen a tenfold increase in the number of complaints of interference from ham radio operators in the last six months. New housing developments which have dramatically increased the population there and placed homes unusually close to each other are the predominant contributing factor. Similar conditions exist in most of the county. We have radio hams getting into toasters, electric pianos, light bulbs, everything, from their powerful transmitters that cause all this static. Many of our citizens can't use basic appliances or watch television because of all the junk that the hams are broadcasting, she tol d the Press-Telegram by telephone. Hams can't say they didn't see this coming. They were warned by the county last year that if they did not submit to a check of their stations by officials, they would have limits imposed on their operation. Few consented to the searches, which most decried as invasive. But nobody expected a total ban on transmissions. This is outrageous. You'd better believe we're going to fight back and win. This is a totalitarian seizure of our rights that is totally illegal and can't stand up, said Frank Wilson, a local ham club president. He said there were no formal plans for an appeal yet but preparations were underway. Wilson claims that a federal preemption of local zoning ordinances, called PRB-1, delineates three rules for local municipalities to follow in accomodating antenna structures such as are used by hams. But Nyborg says that PRB-1 applies to antenna structures only, and not the transmitters used to feed the antennas with a radio signal. We know all about PRB-1. That's why we said nothing about antennas. This law is not about antennas. It goes after the root of the problem, which is the transmitters that put out huge signals that get into the brains of our children and short-circuit them out. Those are the facts, that's what the scientific evidence points to, he said at a news conference called shortly after the county's action. In 2008, a grou p of researchers in the school of Environmental Health and Safety at Stanford published their findings that exposure to ham radio signals for three hours per day increased the risk of hyperactivity and related disorders by 10% in children aged 12 and under. This effect was seen when a typical ham radio was turned on up to ¼ mile away. The San Luis Obispo city office says that up to 11,000 children in that city live that close to a ham radio station. The Stanford study showed that frequencies around 3.5, 7, and 14 Megahertz were the most harmful, but that the danger existed all the way up to 450 Megahertz and above. We know where the hams are, that information is easy to get on the Internet, said former mayor of Paso Robles and current county supervisor Anthony Wu. Most of these guys are running one hundred watts of power, that's an incredible amount of radiation, and you can't block

Richard Bell [EMAIL PROTECTED] made an utterence to the drakelist gang -- I recall getting as many as 100+ emails daily, that were nothing but spam. That still left about as many real email messages to review. You try reading several hundred email messages a day, gets old quick especially if you notice many with exactly the same subject line (spam for sure!). Email can be a valuable tool, at times, but I really think you are better served writing a letter. Notice I said writing and not copying some form letter. Even a note jotted on paper will wind up on someone's desk. If you must email, keep it short and to the point. State your position in the very first sentence. Don't accuse or flame but do back up your position with some facts. Long emails, and letters for that matter, tend to get tossed or ignored. Do sign your document with your name and include your phone number as well as your mailing address. Please don't send anonymous mail. That will surely go no where. Email is particularly useful when a matter is up for review or a vote. The officials will ask about the number of calls or emails supporting or opposing a given issue. If anyone wants to go offline and discuss this subject, I will be glad to do it. I don't want to take up the bandwidth even though it is important we make known the threat to our hobby. -Original Message- From: Thom R. Thanks to everyone for their opinions. My thoughts are somewhat skewed since I possess a B line. I just thought the price was a bit exorbitant based on what I had seen on this list. By the way, the title was a true case of fat fingering and not a slight. It should have read R-4C and not R-$C. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, May 20, 2004 9:22 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [drakelist] R-$C That receiver had all the sherwood modifications installed along with 3 Drake filters, the noise blanker and an original manual. If there is any doubt as to the value of a Sherwood modified R-4C, just ask some of the owners ... Sherwood Engineering still does several of these reveivers every month. At $800 it was priced quite well. 73, Mike W9MWS

RE: [drakelist] burned
As someone stated it is not just ebay where you can get burned. I have been bitten twice on eHam and probably too many times to count at hamfests over the last 40 years. But, on a happy note, I have purchased Drake gear or gotten assistance from several fellas on this list. I have not been burned or disappointed. But, I am also smart enough to realize there is at least one bum on this list. Hope not to meet him.
