I think the default lut values would suffice.

If X is setting a mode it'll probably load the LUT anyways.

We don't set the palette in mode set either now do we, its loaded in
the dpms on function, maybe we should call it in the mode set base
case as well.

Actually, how's the palette supposed to be handled if mode_set_base
needs to switch from depth 16 to 24? Unless I'm missing something, the
existing palette will be at least incomplete.

should be no flicker, should there?

Now that we can handle 16 bpp on big endian as well, we can save VRAM like this
and probably also improve console output speed. The console only uses a limited
number of colours anyway. (8 bpp might be even better, but that doesn't seem to
work properly yet)

This will require changes to the X driver code which tries to preserve the
console contents, but that never worked for me anyway.
