[dspace-tech] Whitelabel error page

Hi all,

I am from The Australian National University. We have upgraded our dspace 
yesterday (20th May 2024) from DSpace 5.8 to Dspace 7.6.1.

We are getting a whitelabel error page for some items when we try to 
download a bitstream from the item page. We are unable to identify why only 
some items are impacted.

Has anyone else solved this problem?

The error message as below:

Whitelabel Error Page

This application has no explicit mapping for /error, so you are seeing this 
as a fallback.

There was an unexpected error (type=Internal Server Error, status=500).
An exception has occurred

Good morning Akshay,

In your local.cfg in you dspace/config directory there is an option where
you set the directory for the assetstore:

# Assetstore configurations have moved to config/modules/assetstore.cfg
# and config/spring/api/bitstore.xml.
# Additional storage options (e.g. Amazon S3) are available in
`assetstore.cfg`
# assetstore.dir = ${dspace.dir}/assetstore

Do not enable it here as it is also included at the bottom of the local.cfg
file:
include = ${module_dir}/assetstore.cfg

If you enabled it in both places you will get the whitelabel error.

I had this a while ago, so I'm not sure if this is the same problem.
It helped removing / changing metadata fields from the 
submission-forms.xml until the problem vanished.
Look that all XML-elements for the field(s) are complete (the 
submission-forms.dtd shows those you _need_, e.g. "hint" wich we missed 
partially).

This is somewhat unspecific, sorry - could be the wrong way…

Hi Daan,

Thank you for your quick update.

I double checked it. Assetstore is already commented out in my local.cfg.

I am not sure why we are still facing the issue.

I see an error "Cannot invoke 
"org.dspace.storage.bitstore.BitStoreService.isInitialized()" because 
"bitStoreService" is null". I am not sure whether it could be related to 
it. We use local assetstores not s3.

I shall raise a separate thread to discuss this issue.

[dspace-tech] Facing "bitStoreService" is null

 Hi all,

I am from The Australian National University. We have upgraded our dspace 
yesterday (20th May 2024) from DSpace 5.8 to Dspace 7.6.1.

I could see some logs
Cannot invoke "org.dspace.storage.bitstore.BitStoreService.isInitialized()" 
because "bitStoreService" is null 

We are using local assetstores (not s3).

We are also getting white label error page. I have created a new 
conversation for it (subject: Whitelabel error page). Not sure if these are 
related to each other

Has anyone else solved this problem?

We would be glad if someone could help us with us.

[dspace-tech] Solr ERROR 404

Hi!

My Dspace 7.6.1 is having an odd behaviour on search results. 

When I first do a search of any subject, DSpace shows the results without 
any problems, however, if I refresh the page of that search result, the 
following error is thrown:[image: solr-error.png]
The dspace.log and catalina.out don't show any errors when I refresh.
The solr only shows this after a refresh:

It would be great if someone could help!

Hi,

Have you tried reindexing everything?  Assuming the import worked properly 
(no obvious errors in logs), then it's possible the content isn't showing 
because the reindex process either hasn't been triggered or somehow failed.

So, I'd recommend trying:  "[dspace]/bin/dspace index-discovery -b"   while 
Tomcat/Solr are running.  This may take a while for a large amount of 
content, but you should be able to watch its progress via the dspace.log.

If that doesn't work, then I'd recommend checking that your database *has 
content* in the "community", "collection" and "item" tables.  If there's 
nothing in there, then the problem was with the import process.The 
error you received from the "update-sequences" script almost sounds like it 
cannot see any content in the "handle" table, which again may imply the 
import didn't work as expected.

Hi,

By default the Subject Keyword field is configured to use the "srsc.xml" 
controlled vocabulary as defined in the "subject" field in your 
"submission-forms.xml" on the backend: 
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-7_x/dspace/config/submission-forms.xml#L189-L202

The "srsc.xml" file is providing those various values and can be found in 
your config directory as well here: 
https://github.com/DSpace/DSpace/blob/dspace-7_x/dspace/config/controlled-vocabularies/srsc.xml

You can turn off this controlled vocabulary by removing or commenting out 
the "srsc" tag in that submission-forms.xml 
configuration.  This would turn this field into a free text field.

More information on configuring the Submission UI can be found in the docs 
at https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/Submission+User+Interface  
 Especially take a look at the sections on the "submission-forms.xml" which 
is where you define the fields in each of the forms.

Hi Dale,

A 504 error is a Gateway Timeout.  That tends to mean there may be a 
connection issue to the site itself...or between the frontend & backend.

I'd recommend taking a look at our Troubleshooting Guide: 
https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSPACE/Troubleshoot+an+error#Troubleshootanerror-DSpace7.x(orabove)

Specifically, if the UI or REST API is misconfigured, it's possible that 
the UI is somehow failing to send data to the REST API.  These types of 
errors will *never* appear in backend logs...they are only visible in your 
web browser (in DevTools on the Network tab).   So, the best approach would 
be to open your browser's DevTools and try to reproduce the error.  You 
should hopefully see a more detailed error in the Network tab (see 
Troubleshooting guide), which may provide you a hint as to what is going on.

If it is a connection error or configuration error, then you are likely to 
see one of the errors listed in our Common Installation Issues here: 
https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/DSDOC7x/Installing+DSpace#InstallingDSpace-CommonInstallationIssues
  
 In which case that page should walk you through steps to try to solve the 
problem.

Hi Akshay,

Usually when you get a "*Service is null" error, that's a sign that the 
DSpace backend didn't startup properly because of a larger problem.  The 
larger problem may be an issue with connecting with the Database or Solr, 
or it could be a sign that something in your upgrade/install didn't go 
properly (e.g. old libraries are still installed that are causing errors).

I'd recommend looking closely at your dspace.log file for **additional 
errors**.  That "bitStoreService is null" error may not be the only error, 
and it may be a sign that a more serious error occurred before that.  If 
you cannot find any additional errors, then I'd recommend sharing the full 
stacktrace of that "bitStoreService is Null" error.  Sometimes the entire 
stacktrace can give others hints as to what might be going on.

If Solr is returning a 404 then it's likely either a configuration issue or 
Solr is somehow crashing on you in some way (but the latter is less likely 
if you don't see issues in Solr logs).  I'd recommend following the steps 
in our Troubleshooting Guide to see if there are additional errors that can 
be found in your browser's DevTools (Network tab) when you reproduce this

[dspace-tech] yarn merge-i18n does not update changes

The first time I made changes to the es.json5 file, the changes were 
applied after running the command: yarn merge-i18n -s 
src/themes/mytheme/assets/i18n
and now the changes I add are not reflected.
For example these lines:

Where do I translate  {{ type }} to be a collection or community?

Hi,

did you try to figure out the correct SSL config by using openssl, not the 
browser ? While browsers tend to be lax, Java is absolutely picky on that.
A good example is the DSpace Demo site:

openssl s_client -connect demo.dspace.org:443

this is configured OK. If you get an error because of missing intermediate 
certs or wrong order of the certs this can be a reason for problems.

I got it to work. I feel incredible. The sheer sense of accomplishment as I got 
the dev frontend to work.
