RE: [dspace-tech] Google Scholar does not index our DSpace

2020-12-01 Thread Baer,Helen
Hi there jjbenitez,

You might be right about the restrictions affecting the indexing. Google is
very particular. Our repository, Mountain
Scholar, wasn't being indexed either. We reached
out to Google and discovered that we had so many metadata "errors," in the eyes
of Google, that they had stopped indexing us altogether. We corrected the
errors and now we're being indexed again. It was quite a process.

Best,

I have a problem with our institution's DSpace.
https://repositorio.uci.cu/

Google Scholar is not indexing any content.
I have checked the sitemaps and robots.txt and it seems to be fine as does the
metadata in the HTML headers
The only strange thing I see is that access to the bitstreams is restricted.
Could this influence Google Schoolar not indexing anything on the site?

Install ImageMagick, add it to dspace.cfg and run these commands to generate
thumbnails:

dspace filter-media -f -p "ImageMagick PDF Thumbnail" -v

dspace filter-media -f -p "ImageMagick Image Thumbnail" -v

Dear Helen,

I downloaded one of the PDFs in the linked collection and was able to create a
nice thumbnail using ImageMagick directly on the command line:

$ convert -flatten CUCSSN8319.pdf\[0\] CUCSSN8319.pdf.jpg
$ convert -thumbnail x600 CUCSSN8319.pdf.jpg
CUCSSN8319-thumbnail.pdf.jpg

So the PDFs seem OK. It could be an issue with memory or ImageMagick
version/configuration on your server. Try running the dspace filter-media
command in verbose mode for one of the PDFs to see if there are any errors:

$ dspace filter-media -i 10976/167371 -f -v

RE: [dspace-tech] ORCID integration- programmatically pulling ORCID from authentication key into another field

Hi Terry, could you point us to a record which has a linked ORCID? Helen

That is an important detail that I did not include. We do not use the lookup
tool. We key in the ORCID in the "identifier" box or we pull it in from
ProQuest.

If you look at one of our ETD collections, you will see that some items have a
linked ORCID.   https://repository.library.georgetown.edu/handle/10822/761431

I feel silly asking, but how does this actually work? From what I can see of
DSpace's ORCID integration, the ORCID appears only as a text string within the
authentication key. Assuming an article has only one author, will the ORCID
actually appear in that field? Or is additional customization necessary?

This works reasonably well for items with only one author. Since the majority
of our content with ORCID's are ETD's, this works for us.

We've enabled ORCID integration on our author field and are wondering if
there's a way to programmatically add the ORCID from the authentication key to
another field specifically for this data.

So, we'd like to take the text string highlighted in pink...

Has anyone found a way to do this? The alternative we're looking at is to
manually cut and paste from the authority key, but it seems like there should
be an easier way.

Thanks in advance for any help or insight you can provide!
