[Dspace-tech] Could DSpace use Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) as an assetstore?

2007-03-28 Thread Richard MAHONEY
Dear Subscribers,

Over the past day or two I've been testing Amazon's Simple Storage
Service (S3):

 http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=16427261

At this point I've merely been using it to backup web servers and
development directories. This has involved the simple upload of
compressed tarballs (using the Java app. jSh3ll) but also the
synchronising of file systems (using the Ruby app. s3sync).

In all, I've been pleasantly surprised by the results. It would seem
that the S3 storage system promises to be more resilient than anything
I could build at a reasonable cost.

Although I've only been using S3 for remote backup, it seems that it
can also be used as a live file system for storing and retrieving data
for web apps. I am wondering then, if anyone, may be able to suggest
how it might be possible to configure (cajole) DSpace-1.4 into using S3
as an assetstore. The Amazon blurb says that S3:

`Uses standards-based REST and SOAP interfaces designed to work with any
Internet-development toolkit.'

Best regards,

 Richard MAHONEY

Re: [Dspace-tech] DSpace and SRW: 404 not available

2007-03-28 Thread LeVan,Ralph
There should be diagnostic messages in the tomcat logs explaining what
happened. Try looking in /logs/catalina.out. If you can't puzzle it
out, feel free to send me the logs.

Subject: [Dspace-tech] DSpace and SRW: 404 not available

Dear list-members,

I set up Dspace 1.4.1 and everything works fine. Now I tried to use Ralph LeVan
SRW-package, which installed smoothly, but only gives me access to the "test"
database configured in SRWServer.props (http://localhost:8080/SRW/search/test).
Trying to call the Dspace Database (http://localhost:8080/SRW/search/DSpace )
results in a 404 error (Tomcat 5.0.28, Postgresql 8.2 win32, jdk 1.6.0); my
SRWServer.props for dspace are aas follows:

SRW.Home=C:/Programme/Apache Software Foundation/Tomcat 5.0/webapps/SRW/

default.database=DSpace

resultSetIdleTime=300

makeIndex.html=true

index.html=C:/Programme/Apache Software Foundation/Tomcat
5.0/webapps/SRW/index.html

db.DSpace.class=ORG.oclc.os.SRW.DSpaceLucene.SRWLuceneDatabase

db.DSpace.home=c:/dev/dspace/

db.DSpace.configuration=config/DSpace.SRWDatabase.props

Dspace.SRWDatabase.props is "as is", I didn`t change anything.

What am I doing wrong? Did I overlook something?

Any help help is highly appreciated.

Yours

ralf

Re: [Dspace-tech] Hardware requirements

2007-03-28 Thread Robert Tansley

Hi Berker,

Your hardware requirements will depend on your anticipated number of items,
size of content (in Gb), number of concurrent users and so forth. DSpace
can run on a laptop or on a multi-server cluster.

I'd suggest you email your anticipated usage requirements, and ask anyone
who currently has a similar instance to post their hardware specs.

Rob

[Dspace-tech] Ordering of Multi-Part Submissions

2007-03-28 Thread Scott Leonard
I have a question about how DSpace orders multi-part submissions, and I
apologize if the question has already been asked. We have a number of
multi-part items in our repository, items where the "document" consists
of multiple parts, e.g. a report broken into chapters where each chapter
is a separate bitstream. It appears when looking at these items that
the repository, even if the submitter is careful in ordering the parts
sequentially (chapter 1 before chapter 2), the repository presents the
"randomly" to someone viewing the item (see
http://hdl.handle.net/1984/202 as an example). Does it matter the order
in which we submit multi-part items or will DSpace always randomize the
parts on an item view?

Thanks.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Help:Ant fresh_install Error (newbie)

2007-03-28 Thread BEAZLEY, Robert
You'll also need to install the ant-optional package in Ubuntu. The command:

sudo apt-get install ant-optional

will download and install the package and you should be able to then build
Dspace without problems.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Advanced search basic question

2007-03-28 Thread Claudia Jürgen
Hi Nina,

the advanced search uses (unless otherwise chosen)
AND, i.e. field1 and field2 and field3.

Whereas in the simple search the terms are connected based on the
configruation property "search.operator" in the dspace.cfg. The default
operator is OR.
