[Dspace-tech] Titles for bitstreams

2009-04-23 Thread Lyn Amery
Hi all,

Is it possible to add a bit more metadata for an item's bitstream,

beyond the usual filename | size | format? I'm thinking especially

of including a title for the bitstream. I will have cases where the
item

contains a dozen or even hundreds of bitstreams and, unless the file

name is descriptive enough, clients will have to open multiple
bitstreams

in hopes of lucking across the one they're looking for. I'm also toying

with the idea of providing different resolution versions of large
images,

and being able to indicate the resolution clearly for each bitstream
would

be a definite plus.

I'm using XMLUI, by the way on version 1.5.1.

Cheers,

Lyn

I am resending the mail (subject: cannot register eperson ) as I have now
subscribed to the mailing list along with the following information

Problem : I cannot register the eperson created .

Dspace version is 1.5.1

Dspace.log file is attached

I went to the administer menu by logging to My dspace using the email ID

I create a Eperson with some email id as required by checking the login
box given in the details. After logging with the email id of the newly
created Eperson, it asks for the password .

If I try to register, I get the following message:

Thanks for the mail.

I am sorry The problem is that it shows the eperson being already registered,
but the eperson cannot log in.
So if I give I forgot password I get the said error.

As for the page source I have the following line:

pThe system has experienced an internal error. Please try to do what you
were doing again, and if the problem persists, please contact us so we can fix

I did the changes putting our mail server in place of mail.myu.edu. and
keeping my password/myuser as it is.

Hi Rajiv,

is anyone able to register himself or are you logged in as an admin able
to submit an item?
If not, this is most likely due to invalid smtp settings in dspace.cfg.

Check the following section in dspace.cfg.

# Email settings ##

# SMTP mail server
mail.server=smtp.myu.edu

# SMTP mail server authentication username and password (if required)
# mail.server.username = myusername
# mail.server.password = mypassword

# SMTP mail server alternate port (defaults to 25)
# mail.server.port = 25

# From address for mail
mail.from.address = dspace-nore...@myu.edu

# Currently limited to one recipient!
feedback.recipient = dspace-h...@myu.edu

# General site administration (Webmaster) e-mail
mail.admin = dspace-h...@myu.edu

# Recipient for server errors and alerts
# alert.recipient = email-address-here

# Recipient for new user registration emails
# registration.notify = email-address-here

If the settings are correct, please provide detailed information (stack
trace) of the internal error, you find these in the logs. In case you
got the Internal Error Page the stack trace can also be found in the
page source. Right click in the browser and view source. Find
h1Internal System Error/h1.

Hope that helps

[Dspace-tech] Import tool: How to set primary bitstream

2009-04-23 Thread Alvaro Sandoval

Hi all:
I am importing more than one file per item using the [dspace]/bin/import
tool.
I wonder how can I set one of them as primary bitstream. I know that it can
be done using the UI, but I rather prefer use some automatic procedure.
Does anyone know how to set it?

Thanks in advance,

Tomcat's own logs may contain more information about the error. Their
names and paths depend on how you installed and configured Tomcat, but
generally they are named 'catalina.log' and 'catalina.out' or
something similar.

[Dspace-tech] error code 5

2009-04-23 Thread Lu, Chichi
Hello,

I am trying to install DSpace onto a Windows 2003 server. However, I cannot
get the Postgres service to start. Event viewer says \could not open process
token: error 5\ every time I attempt to start the service via Services window
and command prompt. I\'ve uninstalled and installed Postgres about 10 times.
Everything else seems to be working properly until that part of the
installation instructions.

Do you have instructions on using another database (such as Oracle) to install
DSpace or a way to fix this \error code 5\? Thanks!

Warm regards,

It sounds like you need to post a question on a PostgreSQL list -- you
have a problem with PostgreSQL, not DSpace, at this point.

  http://www.postgresql.org/community/

I've been away from Windows for some time, and have never hosted
PostgreSQL on Windows, but I recall that error 5 is access denied.
I think something is not right about the ownership or permissions of
the process that the service controller is complaining about.

[Dspace-tech] Special Groups

2009-04-23 Thread clive gould
Hi

I have published in my DSpace install blog information on installing DSpace
1.5.2 on CentOS 5.3 and getting DSpace/AD authentication working:

http://www.linuxtraining.org.uk/blogger.html

Now I am starting to wonder if anyone managed to get more than one special
group working with DSpace with LDAP/AD authentication?

What I am interested in is getting:

   - Staff users from AD automatically added to a staff special group in
   DSpace
   - Student users from AD automatically added to a student special group in
   Dspace.

I understand this may involve writing code associated with the
getSpecialGroups methods.

Automatic group membership for staff and students in DSpace worked well with
RADIUS authentication, but the RADIUS module won't work for me any longer :(

Has anyone got this working with LDAP authentication I wonder?

Thanks in advance

[Dspace-tech] Changing versions of the jdbc driver--how?

2009-04-23 Thread Jeffrey Trimble
We are running Postgresql 8.2 amd Tomcat 6, and have noticed that
Dspace 1.5.1 arrives with postgresql-8.1-408.jdbc3.jar.

I believe this may have caused some of my indexing (search) problems,
and wondered how to replace
the driver with the newest jdbc4 driver that is compatible with
postgresql 8.2 and Tomcat 6?

Is this a simple replacement of the .jar file, OR, is there some hard
coding done for this? And if it is hard coded,

where does one change it?

[Dspace-tech] Trying to make bitstream URLs accessible to discovery layer

2009-04-23 Thread Dillon Moore
Hi,

Our library has a Koha catalogue for print items and a Dspace repository
for PDFs, and we're trying to make both searchable through an
Aquabrowser discovery layer. We've run into a problem with exposing the
URLs of the PDF bitstreams to the discovery layer so that they can be
included in the full record view. The discovery layer accesses our
Dspace through OAI-PMH, and we've been looking into ways to alter the
Dspace code so that it delivers the bistream URL information, but
because of the way those URLs are generated, we're having trouble
finding a way to do it.

Does anyone have any advice for the best way to expose the PDF URLs to
the discovery layer?

Our Dspace info:

-version 1.5.2

-running on Debian 5.0

Thanks!

[Dspace-tech] xmlui and itemCounter

2009-04-23 Thread Wayne Johnston
I wanted to activate the item counter in the xmlui interface and, although the
dspace.cfg file claims that the webui.strengths parameters don't apply to the
xmlui interface I found a post that suggested otherwise.
So, I set show and chache to true and the counts appeared;
however, I then noticed that a recent submission was not reflected in the
counts.
So I ran ItemCounter to update the totals in cache.
Curiously, I now have an up-to-date count on the community page and the
collection page but when I am at the home page, looking at the array of all
communities and collections, this particular collection is still showing as
zero (0) instead of one (1).
All other counts are consistent from home page, community pages and collection
pages.
Does this make sense to anyone?
Has anyone else experienced this?
Any advice?

Subject: [Dspace-tech] Import tool: How to set primary bitstream

Hi all:
I am importing more than one file per item using the [dspace]/bin/import
tool.
I wonder how can I set one of them as primary bitstream. I know that it can
be done using the UI, but I rather prefer use some automatic procedure.
Does anyone know how to set it?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Dspace-tech] xmlui and itemCounter

2009-04-23 Thread Stuart Lewis
Hi Wayne,

The xmlui ignores the webui.strengths.show setting in dspace.cfg and delegates
the decision whether or not to show the strengths to the theme that you are
using. In the latest version of Dspace, the default theme is enabled to show
the strengths.

If you have webui.strengths.cache set to true (which it must be for them to
appear in the xmlui) then you will need to periodically run [dspace]/bin/dsrun
org.dspace.browse.ItemCounter to have the strengths updated.

Thanks,

I restarted Tomcat and all the counts are accurate now.
It's still not clear to me whether I'll have to run ItemCounter to keep the

I wanted to activate the item counter in the xmlui interface and, although the
dspace.cfg file claims that the webui.strengths parameters don't apply to the
xmlui interface I found a post that suggested otherwise.
So, I set show and chache to true and the counts appeared;
however, I then noticed that a recent submission was not reflected in the
Any advice?

Re: [Dspace-tech] Special Groups

2009-04-23 Thread Stuart Lewis
Hi Clive,

The code you need to write will either need to go in the
getSppecialGroups method, or in the authenticate method.

Ideally it would go in the former, but it depends on whether you can
derive the group you need to add the user to from their EPerson details.
For example if you can tell from their netid or email whether they are
staff or students, then you can write code in getSpecialGroups along the
lines of

if
(context.getCurrentUser().getEmail().contains(@students.bromley.ac.uk)
)

to decide if a user matches.

However if the information cannot be derived from their EPerson
information, but you need the information from their LDAP record (e.g.
to look up group memberships) instead, then you'll have to add code in
the authenticate method. You need to find where in the code the user
gets authenticated, decide which groups to add the user to based upon
their user profile, then use the api call context.setSpecialGroup(int
groupID).

I hope this helps,

Subject: [Dspace-tech] Special Groups

Hi

I have published in my DSpace install blog information on installing
DSpace 1.5.2 on CentOS 5.3 and getting DSpace/AD authentication working:

http://www.linuxtraining.org.uk/blogger.html

Now I am starting to wonder if anyone managed to get more than one
special group working with DSpace with LDAP/AD authentication?

What I am interested in is getting:

* Staff users from AD automatically added to a staff special group
in DSpace
* Student users from AD automatically added to a student special
group in Dspace.

I understand this may involve writing code associated with the
getSpecialGroups methods.

Automatic group membership for staff and students in DSpace worked well
with RADIUS authentication, but the RADIUS module won't work for me any
longer :(

Has anyone got this working with LDAP authentication I wonder?

Thanks in advance

Clive

Re: [Dspace-tech] Trying to make bitstream URLs accessible to discoverylayer

2009-04-23 Thread Stuart Lewis
Hi Dillon,

Can Aquabrowser accept METS via OAI-PMH? METS is supported out of the
box with Dspace + OAI-PMH, and contains a fileGrp containing all of the
links to the PDF bitstreams.

E.g.:

http://researchspace.auckland.ac.nz/dspace-oai/request?verb=ListRecords;
metadataPrefix=mets

Subject: [Dspace-tech] Trying to make bitstream URLs accessible to
discoverylayer

Thanks!

[Dspace-tech] Size of postgresql database

2009-04-23 Thread John Preston
I'm trying to determine the disk space requirements for a new DSpace
installation and I want to know if anybody can tell me what the size of the
postgresql database would be for say every 10,000 items ingested, with an
average (whatever that really equates to) amount of metadata. I want the
size of the postgresql database, not the assetstore.

Re: [Dspace-tech] mvn downloading 1.5.2 artifacts

2009-04-23 Thread Mark Diggory
Don't be alarmed, this is intended behavior with the language packs.
Likewise, until you run ant update nothing you do in maven will have
been pushed into your installation.

Language packs are version ranged [1.5.0,1.6.0) so that as they are
improved (new language/locales added) and corrected your installation
will get those improvements just by running package.

In fact, this is the real purpose/behavior of using Maven, that you
can get the changes the dspace commiters intend to distribute to the
community with little to no effort.

The language packs are intended to be backward compatible (i.e. no
files/properties should ever be removed in a maintenance branch)

If you want to force your build back to a specific version of the
language packs change the version allowed add it to your
[dspace-source]/pom.xml in the dependencyManagement section. Likewise
this applies for any other other dependency in maven, you can mediate
which version is used by adjusting it in this section or in the poms
themselves.
