Re: [Dspace-tech] FW: 1.5.2 browse and UTF-8 and diacritics

2009-05-05 Thread Jennifer Whalan
While I was at it. Has anyone solved the issue about the sort order, with
authors (or subjects I suppose), that contain diacritics. At this link:
http://www.territorystories.nt.gov.au/browse?order=ASC&rpp=20&sort_by=-1&etal=-1&offset=5823&type=author

We have the authors:

Muston, C.

Mutch, Verdun Joseph.

Müller, D.

Myeni, Annie D.

Myerscough, Mark.

But our cataloguers expect for the author "Müller, D." to be between the
authors:

Mull, A. E. E.

and

Muller, W.J.

I've had a look at the source, and if I'm reading it correctly, the
OrderFormatAuthor is the file that controls this, and when it calls
DecomposeDiacitics, it changes this author to "mu(diacritic)ller, w.j." I'm
assuming that because it places the diacritic after the u, that is why this
author is sorting after all the authors that begin with Mu.

To make this long story short, is there a way to make the sort, ignore
diacritics completely, and just order by the character.

Thanks

Jennifer

A question about browsing in 1.5.2 XMLUI

On our test instance, we have upgraded from 1.5.1, to 1.5.2 (using manakin),
and we have an author with the name "Müller, D." However, when you go to view
the browse list of the items of this author, the url is
browse?value=Müller%2C+D.&type=author, but the page says

Browsing by Author "Müller, D."

and shows no items.

Reading through the changelist for 1.5.2, my understanding was that this
http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-132 fixed this problem(?). Another issue
(http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-130), says that you need to remove the
URIEncoding="UTF-8" from the tomcat settings. This setting is currently on for
us.

In 1.5.2, do you still need to remove this from the tomcat settings (although
the manual states that when installing, you need to make sure this is added to
the tomcat settings), or am I missing something. Also, the web.xml file does
have cocoon filter in it.

If it makes any difference, the request header for the browse page of this
author is

Accept-Charset ISO-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.7,*;q=0.7

and the response header is

Content-Typetext/html;charset=utf-8

Thanks

[Dspace-tech] Custom metadata field values not displaying on verify page

2009-05-05 Thread Mitchell, Erik T.
Hi all,

I know there must be an obvious answer but for some reason the values of
some custom metadata fields that we have added for our electronic theses
and dissertation submission process are not displaying on the verify
page. The labels (as put into input-forms.xml) are there and the data
is being stored in the database but the values themselves are not
showing up on the verify screen. Only the fields that we defined as a
new metadata schema (following the NTLDTD schema) have this issue. We
are running Dspace 1.5.0 and are using the jspui interface for
submission.

Has anyone else run into this problem or have a suggestion for me?

Thanks,

Re: [Dspace-tech] Unable to Upload Documents to Dspace

2009-05-05 Thread Stuart Lewis
Hi Martyn,

It could be your permissions. Whatever user Tomcat is running as, needs
read and write permissions over most of your DSpace directory (where the
assetstore and upload directories are etc).

Quite often if you encounter an Internal Server Error (assuming you are
using the jspui) you can view the HTML source of the page and the error
stack trace will be there in an HTL comment. The error message should
help us diagnose the actual problem for you. Occasionally the error is
not in the HTML, and you'll have to look in the log files.

Thanks,

Subject: [Dspace-tech] Unable to Upload Documents to Dspace

Hi there,

I'm trying to setup Dspace for my school to store thesis papers and have
just setup the Dspace accordingly to this link.

http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/Installing_DSpace_on_Red_Hat_Enterprise
_Linux_5

Everything went smoothly till the stage where I'm submitting a PDF
document. It prompted me an 'Internal System Error'.

I tried to check the logs (dspace.log and catalina.out) but it doesn't
show much information.

I'm wondering if it's the file permissions but I have set the owner as
dspace for /home/dspace and /usr/local/dspace.

Appreciate any assistance. Many Thanks!

Thank you & best regards,

[Dspace-tech] About the Ingest Item through LNIclient.java and DspaceSIP.java

2009-05-05 Thread Robin Wang

Hi everyone,
I want to ask some questions about the ingest item process through the LNI.

We know that DSpace offered the unofficial Version of JAVA Code for DSpaceSIP
and LNIClient which for PUT Method are.

With the Combination of the two JAVA Class we can write a minimal LNIClient for
ingest function.

1.The DSpaceSIP is used to build the SIP Package with the original File and
METS File. The original Files are converted to outputstream and the SIP is
zipped. Question is whether DSpace accept the ZIP OS of SIP. I know this is a
foolish question but really want to know.

2.What is the primaryBitstream in the DSpaceSIP?

3.Can I just ignore the workflow for the ingest process in the WebUI, if I
use the SIP to ingest the item in DSpace

4. OutputStream os = lni.startPut(collection, "METS", null); Is the String
“collection” write the WebDAV handle number of the collection, in which I want
to ingest the new item.

5. I have now 1000 PDF Files and the XML Metadaten Files in well-formated
Bibtex and want to ingest the files in DSpace. Does DSpace-Server support the
Bibtex Format to describe the PDF Files?? Can I just build the Bibtex instead
of MODS or DC into the METS(dmdsec)? Or should I convert the Bibtex into QDC
for the DSpace?

Regards
Robin

[Dspace-tech] DSpace 1.6 survey results

2009-05-05 Thread Stuart Lewis
Dear DSpace community member,

We recently ran a survey to collect the views of the community concerning what
new features we should concentrate on building into version 1.6 of DSpace.
Thank you to everyone who took part and gave us their views.

The top three features requested were:

1) Better statistics

2) An embargo facility

3) Batch metadata editing

In order to move forward with these requests, we have decided to form working
groups of interested parties and relevant stakeholders. Each feature has been
assigned a point of contact that will drive forward this process so that we
come to an agreement as to the precise requirements for each of these features,
and to decide if existing solutions that already exist in the community can be
used to provide these features, or if new development efforts are required.

If you are interested in any of these features, look out for further emails in
the next few days from each of the points of contact who will explain how the
process will work for each feature. We will likely use JIRA
(http://jira.dspace.org/), the DSpace wiki (http://wiki.dspace.org/) and online
meetings to complete this process.

If you want to contact the nominated people directly, they are:

Statistics: Mark H. Wood (mw...@iupui.edu)
Embargoes: Richard Rodgers (rrodg...@mit.edu)
Batch editing: Stuart Lewis (s.le...@auckland.ac.nz)

The full results of the survey can be seen in a 'wordle' at
http://www.wordle.net/gallery/wrdl/794098/DSpace_1.6_survey_results

We will also be using Twitter (http://twitter.com/dspacetweets) and its RSS
feeds (http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/37160113.rss) to provide
updates on version 1.6 as they develop.
