Re: [Dspace-tech] dspace 1.6 upgradation windows error - Jspui /xmlui

2010-06-25 Thread Kim Shepherd
Hi Aaron,

It seems as though your JSPUI webapp is still trying to use the 1.5.2
version of dspace-api -- have a look in the WEB-INF\lib folder of your
deployed webapp, and if you see files like dspace-api-1.5.2.jar and
dspace-jspui-api-1.5.2.jar, it means you're trying to run 1.6 JSPs on 1.5.x
code.

If this is the case, it might be worth rebuilding and redeploying
(copying/deploying the whole JSPUI directory, not just changed JSPs)

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Kim

I was under the assumption that this field was used to initially search
the tree to find the user's dn, which was then used in a bind to verify
the password. In my case, the filter would be (uid=jnugent).

At any rate, I gave your suggestion a shot and the issue is still
occurring. I will continue to investigate.

[Dspace-tech] "Who's Using DSpace" update

2010-06-25 Thread Francis, Ronee L
Dear DSpace community-
The DSpace Global Outreach Committee is updating the "Who's Using DSpace"
registry, the most popular page on the DSpace website. Our goal is to keep
everyone's repository information updated to help facilitate connections
between users and to foster collaborations in the future.
Please take a minute to review your current registry information in "Who's
Using DSpace". If
you have recently upgraded to a recent DSpace version or would like add other
information upgrade an existing registry
here. If
you are not able to find your repository in "Who's Using DSpace", register
here.
The "Who's Using DSpace" is a great way to strengthen DSpace community
networking. Members of the DSpace community can now search the database to
discover other institutions which have similar repositories, environments or
interests to their own. Members can see, for example, who is using which
version of DSpace, what kind of customizations they've done, and what kind of
content they store. Users can use a faceted browse to find institutions that
meet specific criteria and perform open text searches on the entire registry.

Remember, it may take up to a week for your changes to appear in "Who's Using
DSpace". We hope to have as many repositories updated as possible for the Open
Repositories 2010 conference in
Spain.

[Dspace-tech] postgresql.jar not found in upgrade package

2010-06-25 Thread Savage, Karen R.
We're currently running dspace 1.3.2 and would like to start the process of
upgrading to the current version. I found the instructions for doing this here:
http://www.dspacedev2.org/1_5_1Documentation/ch04.html#N10F6E
It says to copy the postgresql.jar file from the new package to the current
installation, but the package I downloaded (from here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dspace/files/) doesn't have a postgresql.jar
file in the lib directory or anywhere else. Am I supposed to get it from
somewhere else?

[Dspace-tech] Meatadata dates stored as UTC

2010-06-25 Thread TAYLOR Robin
Hi,

I'm struggling with some dates issues and looking for help.

Dates held in the metadatavalues table are converted from their local time zone
to UTC before being stored in the database. The problem is that they are not
generally converted back to their local time zone before being displayed (see
Jira http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-568). This is misleading to the
user. You could conceiveably see that you had submitted an item whilst you were
still asleep in bed. I'm not sure what to do about this. It would be messy to
always check for a metadatavalue being a date before displaying it. What would
be the consequences of not storing dates as UTC ? Could we store them with a
time zone eg "22:30+04" ? This might be a little less confusing. I'm sure there
are good reasons for storing dates as UTC I just don't know what they are, can
anyone help ?

Cheers, Robin.

They're stored in Zulu time, which has the advantage of not being
dependent on time zones or daylight savings.

The best thing to do is to store them in this timezone, but to convert
them on display to the local time.

Re: [Dspace-tech] postgresql.jar not found in upgrade package

2010-06-25 Thread Claudia Jürgen
Hello Karen,

you do not need to perform each step while performing an update over
several versions.

Just pay attention to all the changed prerequisites, configuration
parameters, initial scripts (e.g. like the browse initializatin) and
perform all the database upgrade steps between the version you are
running and the version you are updating.

For 1.6.2 you'll find the postgres upgrade scripts in:
[dspace-source]/dspace/etc/postgres/
database_schema_13-14.sql
database_schema_14-15.sql
database_schema_15-16.sql

Dependin on the postgres version your instance started on you might get
this error while doing the 15to16 upgrade script:
http://old.nabble.com/-Dspace-tech--running-the-15-to-16-script-td28296853.html
(thread includes error and fix)

Postgres is a dependency meanwhile and will be pulled automatically.
So there is no need to copy the postgres jar anymore.

Hope that helps

Claudia Jürgen

Re: [Dspace-tech] LDAP Authentication generating Exception

2010-06-25 Thread Jason Nugent
Hi folks,

Just to confirm, does DSpace perform a two step check and then bind for
authentication? I ask, because I've been talking to the fellow who has
access to our LDAP server logs and he has informed me that it appears as
though DSpace is attempting to bind with uid=jnugent,dc=unb,dc=ca, which
is obviously incorrect. What it *should* be doing is an initial search
with (uid=jnugent) as a filter, using the
ldap.search_user/search_password, and then retrieving the DN for my
record and binding with that, and the supplied password. In my case, my
full DN is unbCaId=XXX,ou=people,dc=unb,dc=ca where XX is a
unique string. Our users would never know what that string was.

It sounds as though the setting for ldap.object_context is involved in
this, since it is appended to the ldap.id_field and username, but in my
case, I'd want it appended to unbCaID=XX, not my uid=jnugent string.

Regards,

Jason

Re: [Dspace-tech] help on updating dspace configuration

2010-06-25 Thread Carlos S
Thanks for the help Tim and Peter.

@Tim: Yes, I noticed that ant update_configs produced .new files and I
had to manually merge them. This was mentioned after ant target was
completed, so that's helpful.

@Peter: Not sure if we need to do maven package for updating DSpace
configuration. I just did 'ant update_configs' and it worked. But
that's nice workaround for avoiding ant update and renaming.

I looked at build.xml file to get better idea on what's going on. It
seems like init_configs is for reverting back to original/initial
default configuration. The manual note seemed to be confusing though.

Thanks,
CS.

Re: [Dspace-tech] LDAP Authentication generating Exception

2010-06-25 Thread Stuart Lewis
Hi Jason,

DSpace ships with two LDAP options - LDAPAuthentication and
LDAPHeirarchicalAuthentication.

If all your users are in one branch of an ldap tree (e.g. they all exist in
ou=users,dc=unb,dc=ca) then you can use the former. This does not perform an
initial bind, it just binds to the user's DN using their credentials. If the
bind is successful then it allows the user to log in to DSpace.

If your users are scattered across many different branches, then you'll need to
use the LDAPHeirarchicalAuthentication option. This has extra settings in
dspace.cfg to set the DN and password of a user who has search rights across
the LDAP directory. DSpace will bind as that user and then perform a search to
find the DN of the user who is trying to log in. Once it finds that, it then
binds a second time to that DN, using the user's password.

Hopefully the comments in dspace.cfg will guide you through the different
settings. This blog post has some examples settings in that might help
demonstrate what you need to put in where:

Re: [Dspace-tech] LDAP Authentication generating Exception

2010-06-25 Thread Flavio Botelho
Looking at the code:
http://scm.dspace.org/svn/repo/dspace/tags/dspace-1.6.0/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/authenticate/LDAPHierarchicalAuthentication.java

The place where the problem is ocurring seems bizarre..
It is as if ldap.search_scope was not being found in the config file?

Kudos,

Re: [Dspace-tech] LDAP Authentication generating Exception

2010-06-25 Thread Jason Nugent
Aha! I now realize what it is. The ldap.search_scope value is
commented out by default in the config file. I mistakenly believed that
this implied a default value of 2. If you leave the value commented out
and enable Hierarchical LDAP authentication, you generate a
NullPointerException.

All appears to be well. Thanks everyone.

Jason
